A search firm brought us McKenna, and while he did get us to a winning record, I was never thrilled with his hiring.

I hate search firms used in coaching searches..isn't that what an ad is hired to do?? In the case of finding an ad it's more understandable, just because athletics is just one part of what a univ. pres and others deal with and could use some extra input. At the end of the day I'd hope they are using the firm as more of an informational source instead of an end all be all hiring firm. These firms usually have an agenda that leads you down a certain path.. qualified or not

I think that it was the "halo effect" of Dana Altman & Creighton's long record of success that got McKenna to TH. At the time, I thought it was decent move to accompany a "shift in gear" for ISU Basketball. Also, his daughter (Meghan) did wonders to the new scoreboard @ HC after almost of 3 decades of dullness under Cliff Lambert's HC iron-fisted control. When I read the Trib-Star Editorial last week lauding Lambert's TH "vision," I about gagged. TH & HC have been inextricably woven since HC's inception. Just think WHAT MIGHT OF BEEN had HC been managed by someone that actually CARED for ISU Basketball growth & development during this interlude.

***Sorry, but I forgot that it was a "multi-purpose" facility, which "accidentally" had a basketball court placed in the middle of the facility. (Lambert's logic which prohibited outer concourse trophy cases & other ISU memorabilia that once adorned the Arena).

Not until RP arrived did the HC physical "transformation" begin.

I did forget about Meghan McKenna...she was fantastic. And I have to imagine she's still doing fantastic things, whether it be at Oregon or wherever she is.

Do you recall when "Lil Eddie" used to post on here...K-mac's younger bros? I thought it was pretty neat...same w/ Jay Tunnel's mom ("Cap") in Topeka, KS. Gave us a different perspective...much like "Elder Smith."

I really dont like the idea of search firms. I have faith in President Bradley and the rest of the school that they could find a candidate on their own. Hopefully they just weed out some and get a list of potential candidates for the school to hire. Maybe that's how it happens anyway.

I wonder how much ISU is paying? In one of those articles, I think it stated that the bottom line fee is $75,000...

I agree with you & others here on Syc Pride, having confidence that we could've done this WITHOUT hiring an outside firm.

For what it's worth from a old HR exec: When trying to identify a great match for an important executive position the key is for the company/University to do a comprehensive position description identifying all the technical and dimensional (personality traits) qualifications of the position.
Next step is to ensure the assessment group/hiring decision maker do not deviate from THEIR POSITION. If that happens, the probability of a winner being brought on board goes up dramatically, if not, you'll be redoing the search inside of 2 years.

Whether or not to use a recruitment firm is a tough call in my mind. The looseness or the tightness of the market for candidates plays a role in that decision. If a recruiter is brought on board, their compensation should be contingent as a percentage of 1st year's total earnings and should not be paid until the candidate hired has completed at least one year of significantly above the bar performance.

Off the top of my head: If ISU knows how to do the assessment and selection job, I do not think they should go to the expense of bringing in a recruiter. There are tons of professional journals that can more than adequately publish the opening in the marketplace. I would think that there would be a band of candidates that would be attracted to ISU as a final stop on their career path. But an even larger band of candidates who would see a significant steppingstone opportunity at ISU. I'd chase this band just because of the energy level required for this position, even though ISU might be repeating the recruitment in approximately 5 years.

This seems like a job that would generate a lot of unsolicited resumes. I joked with a HS AD one time about their football coaching opening (the team historically sucked) about finding a head coach. he said he had a huge stack of guys wanting the job. I assume this firm will do the weeding out and that ISU's powers-that-be will not be completely out of the loop.

or at least I sure hope that's the case.

Oh yes. Most of the the time done by ISU giving them a list of general qualifications they are looking for. Everyone falling outside of that range, for instance less than 15 years of business, athletic administration, management is automatically eliminated. ISU does have some say so in the vetting process by the qualifications they lay out as a starting point.

Personal if I was them I'd conduct a focus group of members of Sycamore Pride and ask them what is important to them. Provide those who participate free season tickets or a discount and that is the only investment other than time that you have to make. Of course that takes too much time and ITF would tell them to fire everyone then get back to him.

What the hell did I do to get that? :frown:

I have a great idea to expedite the process. We can get a few people from old administrations (im really thinking of 1 or 2) to go through the resumes and sort them into good and bad piles. then we throw away their good pile and hire from their bad pile.

kind of like how i would watch a meteorologist who was wrong 95% of the time instead of one that was right 60% of the time.
