I was just taking a look over the numbers and one thing is absolutely clear to me -- our shooting must improve. We're currently shooting 42.9% as a team, which puts us at 187th in the country.

One more thing that scared me is that over 37% of our shots have been from beyond the three point line. We've taken 217 shots in four games and 81 of them have been treys.

jesus...what scares me is that we aren't shooting the three well AT ALL..that was a big part of our offense last year....

we lost our sniper in Reed. Harry was great at getting into the paint and drawing fouls. those were 2 HUGE losses. i only have seen the ball state game so i cant comment on our shooting woes. the games b4 the ball state game, were the shots we were takin mostly good or bad shot selections? ball state game seemed like the shot clock would get down and we were forced to take some shots that were not the best.

Shooting has gone down a point. We're now shooting 41.9% as a team, good for 249th in the country.

Through 8 games:

Carl - 46.5% (33-71)
Jake - 43.8% (32-73)
Dwyane - 45.8% (38-83)
Odum - 63.6% WOW (14-22)
Walker - 43.5% (27-62)
Carter - 20% (6-30)
Printy - 38.2% (13-34)
Doluony - 33.3% (6-18)
Martin - 23.5% (4-17)
Mahurin - 42.9% (6-14)
McWhorter - 16.7% (1-6)
Lucas Eitel - 50% (1-2)
Logan Eitel - 0% (0-0)

I think when our shot selection improves then the shooting percentage will improve. Carter and Printy are the two that stand out the most in those stats to me, they have got to pick it up.

He has to shoot the ball more - they have to make a point of letting him shoot the rock. I don't care if they are layups, pullups or 3 pointers he needs to open it up a little bit. He hasn't taken on that roll with this team yet, but I it's about time he start trying to assert himself a little more on the O side of the ball. We need him to be a scorer and a passer.

That is a lot to ask of a young man, not saying he can not deliver just that is basically doing everything.

Oh and I don't disagree with that in the least - just that their is really no reason for him playing the minutes that he has to only have shot the ball 22 times 8 games into the season. I would feel better about him taking more shots than some of the guys right now that can't throw the ball in the ocean... But year no doubt, that is a lot to ask of him.

really need the context of a shot chart to tell anything.

A bit more teamwork is needed; the extra pass, the drive and kick out, AND THE SHOOTER BEING READY AND IN A POSITION TO TAKE THE SHOT. Too much dribbling and not enough passing kills the shot selection also.

Definitely. Also, I've been kind of discouraged with our screening this year. I know our guys are supposed to roll most of the time off the screen, but the screens are just soft for the most part. Was just watching the Kansas/Memphis and Georgia/Georgia Tech games and there were some physical screens being set. Would love to see some more of this mixed in.

Printy's absense definitely was felt. Hopefully he can come back out shooting well like he did in the Loyola game. Would also like to see Odum get some more shots, Carl as well.

The screening has been AWFUL. It seems like we are called for an illegal screen at least twice a game.

I wouldn't mind having Odum take a couple more shots, but, his release is awfully low on his jump shot. He is much better going to the rack. I had always envisioned him turning into ISU's version of 2007-08 Adam Emmenecker from Drake (8.6 pts; 4.6 rebs; 6.5 asts; 1.6 stls--Not to mention MVC POY and Honorable Mention AP All-American)

These numbers seem startling to me.

Printy (before the injury obviously) was 13-34 and 12-28. So all but six of his shots were three point attempts.

Carter is 6-25 with 4-17 from three point range. Doluony is 6-17 and 4-14 on threes.

So basically the majority of shots these three players are taking are three pointers. It would be nice to see them getting some shorter jumpers. Printy and Doluony should be two of our better shooters.

I've always thought Printy was our outside threat. Carter just behind him...
Carter SHOULD get more 2-pointers because he handles the ball a little better. Printy is more of a set-shot specialist. In my mind, there is no reason for Dulouny NOT to have more "put back" attempts than he has... maybe I just have him playing an incorrect position in my head.

No doubt they can all hit the three. I just think to get them going we need to be setting them up for some closer jumpers. Taking 28 three point attempts in 34 shots is a lot!
