The Odum Level
This might be one of those topics that gets away from being strictly about Sycamore football, so if it needs to be moved I understand, but I find it interesting that the success we had on the football field this year has me pretty level headed and calm in regards to how poorly the Colts are playing. It's also part of why I'm not so on edge about the early struggles of our men's and women's basketball teams. Anyone else finding themselves a little less frustrated about how their other favorite sports teams are doing as a result of the football team's success this fall? Again, thank you Sycamores. :)

Bent, it's funny that you mention that.....

But I've been teasing some of the Colts people about them moving their training camp from Terre Haute to Anderson.

I told them that they lost a lot of games before coming to Terre Haute when they were in Anderson, had great years while being in Terre Haute, and now they're 6-6 after going back to Anderson.

I joke that they've lost that Terre Haute mojo, which has now gone to the Sycamores football program. : > )

I am 100% on board with this... I said it from day 1, Colts should have never left TH, didn't ever appreciate how much of a good thing going they had. Hell I'm a huge Colts fan but I'm glad they left and passed on the good fortune to the Sycamores.

The Colts had a good run, hell a great run but dare I say that they needed to be put in their place for a season. After they didn't re-sign Reggie - I think that was stupid and they didn't bring Colts back to Terre Haute, just silly things like that have really bothered be about the Colts.

As a Bears fan, the biggest issue with the Colts is that they have too much money tied up into to few players. We did the same thing 4-5 years ago and we're now to the point where we're spreading it out and low and behold, we've got more quality players and depth along the roster.

The Colts need to do the same. Plus, the injuries certainly don't help.

Injuries and arguably the worst offensive line in the NFL. I just found it interesting that for a while early in the season, the Sycamores were winning each week the Colts lost and vice versa, and it disappointed me far more on those weekends when the Sycamores lost. I was to a point of gladly sacrificing a Colts loss in exchange for an ISU win. Although, the 2009-2010 season was much the same. Going 14-0 wasn't that big of a deal to me. The Colts had similar seasons before. I think that's it though, seeing something you haven't seen before from your team. We certainly are with the Sycamores. I don't remember the glory days of the early 80s, so this is new for me.

Jason, is correct the Colts do have too much money tied up in to few players, this is the same problem the Pacers made a few years ago. The injuries definitely play a role and now the Indy Star is reporting that both Donald Brown and Mike Hart are questionable for Thurs. night with ankle problems. So the Colts turned to Dominic Rhodes. I don't care who you are when you start getting to the fifth and sixth level of the depth chart that is thin territory.

And once you start getting this far down the depth chart how your money is divided doesn't matter. When you're signing the left overs late in the season because even your second and third stringers are banged up, you're playing with guys at the league minimum who are just off the street. I've complained about the way the money is divided over the years but it's hard to argue with seven straight seasons with 12 or more victories.

You are correct the money is minimum at the lower levels but so is the talent. The money issue won't let you sign younger free agents in order to keep the cycle going, especially when you miss in the draft.

Freeney ($6.25m) is overpaid for being a 50% snaps player. Sanders ($4m) is overpaid. Hayden ($17.3m) is overpaid. Saturday ($9m) is overpaid. Between these 4 guys alone, you've got like $35m+ wrapped up.

Additionally, due to the Colts scheme, it further accentuates the problems. They lack at top shelf LT (and other OL) because of overpaying and they lack run stopping DE because they've duplicated Freeney in Mathis. Yes, sacks and pretty cool and all, but that doesn't win ball games when opposing teams are running the ball right past the pass rush.

The Patriots, for example. have one offensive linemen over the $4m mark and it's their left tackle. They're doing it right and I think Polian, for all the great personnel things he has done, is drinking too much of his own Kool-Aid.

Us Colts fans are so spoiled with all this recent success, and when seasons like this come around, we don't what to do with ourselves. I honestly, haven't watched a Colts game since the one before New England. I could care less about the NFL now, with college basketball going on now.

Exactly. And when your ego gets in the way of pretty much conventional draft wisdom, you end up busting more freuquently. Polian's ego though he could just pluck quality offensive linemen out of the 2nd round where they are notorious for being a reach, busts, etc. Ugoh, Pollack -- how have they worked out? Hell, the Colts haven't taken an offensive linemen in the first round this decade.

2010 - Jerry Hughes DE - Zane Beadles, starting RG of Denver
2009 - Donald Brown RB - Eric Wood, starting RG of Buffalo
2007 - Anthony Gonzalez WR - Could have moved up to get Ben Grubbs, starting LG of Ravens or Joe Staley, starting LT of 49ers.
2005 - Marlin Jackson DB - Logan Mankins picked by Pats 4 picks later.

Those are just 4 picks that could have been done differently and you can find similar starters along the defensive line that were passed over. For all of the praise Polian gets, if I were a Colts fan, I'd seriously be wondering if he has lost his edge because his recent performance has dictated as much.

Also, its the NFL. Every team deals with injuries. Packers have a I.R. list that rivals if not more than the colts. I dont know how many they have on that list off the top head, but they are considered one of the better teams in the NFC and will be in the playoffs.

Its the front office that caused this, and now they want to make Peyton the highest paid player in the league. Not looking good for the future of the colts.

I would disagree with one thing....

the Packers may have a lot of injuries this year, but the Colts have a league leading 14 players on injured reserve right now. Powers went on IR today. And that doesnt include Addai, Session, Sanders, Collie, Hayden, Hart, Brown.

One thing to be said for the bad Colts season and the success of the Sycamores, is that you might see more fans at Memorial Stadium next year wearing Sycamores royal blue (Indiana State gear) instead of Colts royal blue (shirts and sweatshirts with the horseshoe). I already noticed a big difference from the 2009 homecoming game to 2010 game. In 2009, it seemed like for every one ISU shirt I saw there was at least five people wearing Colts stuff. At least it's all the same shade of blue, but this year there was more of a shift toward ISU shirts, I thought.

The Colts could have taken Saffold, who has turned into a stud for the rams...late in the draft this past year also!!!!!!

IF you think the IR is bad now, wait until the league pushes through the 18-game schedule!

I see no need for it but IF they do it, they'll need to expand the active roster by AT LEAST 10 players AND the practice/taxi/scout team by 10+.

The INTERESTING piece will be who gives up the money for the add'l players...
the ownership? the players? Wait, wait -- The FANS WILL!

Interestingly, Jacksonville's home attendance has gone up a bit this year...

according to the latest statistics.

In a recent SportsBusiness Daily article about attendance around the NFL this year, it has skyrocketed in Jacksonville.

Per SBD, the Jags have experienced a 36.5-percent increase, which is impressive.
