Bob Evans

The Starter Level
Here's a story of true sportsmanship and kindness: senior Liz Evans, a multiple NCAA Division III high jump champion, was competing in the Ohio Northern Univ. Invitational last weekend. Liz joined an ONU competitor in being the two left standing after a hour of challenging jumps. The ONU athlete had just cleared her all-time personal heighth. The high jump bar was set to be raised by 5cm when Liz ...suggested to the judges that it to be increased by only 3cm so that the ONU jumper -- a senior -- could meet the qualifying standard for the indoor nationals. She cleared the heighth; Liz went onto win the event (along with the long jump and was third in the 60-meter dash). A witness at the meet stated: "It is one of those situations that expresses hope in the younger generation and can be an inspiration to others." Liz is also an Academic All-American off the track, majoring in math and electrical engineering.

I don't care if you did post it. The world needs more stories like it. It's only better because it's your little girl. Bet you're a very proud papa.

Dude one hell of a young lady you have there congratulations one raising not only a great athlete but a fine human being. I know you are proud.

Thanks for posting--an excellent story, and a great example of selflessness from an outstanding young lady with a bright future!

Also a great heads up call on her part. The other side of the coin is that it is sad that she had to be the one to point it out.

Had the pleasure of personally meeting Mr. Evans at an indoor meet at Rose this year - great guy, class act himself.

I tell you - under a previous name I once had it out with Mr. Evans on this forum. It was more of my immaturity at the time than anything else.

But his daughter has already defined herself as a great athlete - I think that any "good" parent would trade in all the championships in the world for stories like this.

Thanks for sharing - I can't say I've seen many good examples of good sportsmanship in my years of college athletics - these occurances are few and far between, when they occur they should be shared with the world.

That's the kind of thing that give you goosebumps when you read it and know a little about the young lady involved. Great story dad!

I remember the incident you are referring to, SSOM. To your defense, if I had said what you thought I had said, I'd have deserved to be blasted. Once I had a chance to explain and you realized that you had misinterpreted my comments, all was fine.

And Jason, the girl from ONU, Vickie Moga, would have been hesitant to suggest a change that would result in an advantage for her.

And to everyone, you bet I am proud of her. Prouder than when she won a championship. I attribute her good qualities to her mother (maybe the Sycamore influence in her genetic makeup helped a little).

I did not realize what Elizabeth had done until afterwards. Imagine how I felt when I heard an ONU student tell one of their friends what had taken place. That's a day I'll always remember. Now I need to figure out who posted the thing on facebook news. I don't do facebook so I'm not even sure how visible the news portion is.
