Yes...well when the Mayor back in the 60's tells the FBI, "You want to step on our toes, I'll break your knees." then it is no surprise that most of the local restaurants are no more.

And no one has mentioned the Rod and Gun...it isn't really in Terre Haute but close and pretty darn good.

That places is on point as well... I love to tell this story:

Any time Greg Oden is in town (which is quite often during the off season) he loves to go to the Rod and Gun Club. It's his favorite restaurant in town. He walks in and people always give him awkward looks (like why the hell are you here?) but he's so big they wouldn't dare say a word and best thing about it is they don't know who he is... lol It wasn't that many years ago when Black's were not allowed in the Rod and Gun Club.

Well last time he was in town on a Friday night we drove all the way from Southern Vigo Co. to the Rod and Gun Club (it had just re-opened, they didn't even have their liquor licences yet) to pick up 3 orders of Chicken Livers, that was it! lol He walks in sits down in the bar area waiting for his order and a guy says to him, "how tall are you? you should play football or something". lol His son no older than 10, taps his dad on the shoulder and says, "No daddy, I think that's Greg Oden"! Priceless - Greg got a piece of paper from the waitress and signed it for the kid. The dad proceeded to ask Greg, "How in the hell did you find this place? And what in the Hell are you doing in Rosedale?"

I think he really likes the fact that he can go in a restaurant that know one knows him and he can eat in those private rooms. Plus they have the best Chicken Livers in the country, what else could a man worth millions ask for? lol

and what is that Italian place across the street (well just down the street and across) from the Oberlander club. Carosi's or something like that...they have pretty good food too. I know that Royce Waltman used to eat there alot. I always enjoyed it...I assume it is still open.

Still open - another local establishment with excellent food!

Imagine that, a 'private, social club' in the sticks of Indiana...

At least that's why I'm 'assuming'
Black's were not allowed in the Rod and Gun Club.

Hard to believe the FBI was afraid of any mayor, T-H or otherwise...

Best Terre Haute eateries...with specialties...

1. Red Lobster
2. Ruby Tuesday (great salad bar)
3. Copper Bar (best "bar food" ... try the shrooms)
4. Saratoga (prime rib is AWESOME) - Beef Manhattans are very good too.
5. Moggers (food OK...great selection of beer)
6. Bally (pizza is good) - Great Sponsor of ISU Athletics, and great HD TV's with TRUE HD reception.
7. Ricks (BBQ)...not sure of the name..Rick Burchell's place down by FB Stadium - Rick's Smokehouse BBQ - another good local owner that gives back to the community.
8. Beef O'Brady's..big ISU supporters...good food
9. Marizios...more obscure pizza place, 747 feeds big group - Owned by an ISU Alum, and is a GREAT ISU supporter. I See Eric at most ISU games.
10. BW's...wings (obviously)

Added some comments above in bold..

Adding some more:
Clabber Girl Bake Shop has some great flat-bread sandwiches... right across from Hulman Center.
Sonka's Bar has a great chef salad. - as well as THE BEST beer selection in town... hands down.
If you are coming in off of I-70 and US-46, there is a mexican restaurant in the Walmart plaza...Real Hacienda.. good food.

I llike the new JD Steakhouse on 3rd street. It's theme is John Dillinger. Best breadsticks in town!

Yeah that's his spot - he would choose to eat at the Rod and Gun Club over any place in town. A few months ago when went, Josh McRoberts joined us...

I guess you have to understand and see the looks on peoples faces when he walks in a restaurant or establishment of anykind... He's pretty recognizable at 7ft. lol We also went to the Bally a couple times this summer, man that was a good time. He dropped a pretty penny in the Whoooo.

Yeah the history behind that place is pretty amazing! The amount of lude acitvity that was going on in that place is amazing... Could you imagine? lol

I have yet to eat at:

Sam's Steakhouse
JD's Steakhouse
King Gyro
The Apple Club (I've heard this is VERY good.)

was never impressed with Sam's...its okay but nothing great

Apple Club is a decent place. It has a good menu and good quality food. I wouldn't say it is any better than any "chain" personally, but I have been pleasantly surprised with their different entrees/specials from time to time.

Also, Morgan you might know. That place that used to be over near 25th and Hulman or so...near the community theatre...little italian place that was only open 2-3 nights per week. Very cool little place, very much a date place. IWhat is it called and s it still open? Thinking about taking my wife there if it is still open next time we are in town and if it is open...

Zamberletti - Pretty good restaurant, just down the street from my house. I actually went their my senior year of high school as I was escorting my best friends girl friend Marybeth Boeglin (younger sister of Mel Boeglin) durring Terre Haute South Homecoming festivities! lol The good ole days! ahah

Also across the street from the Community Theater is Harry and Buds http://harryandbuds.com/ - which is only open for lunch. But if you are not in a hurry on a Saturday for a brunch around 11:00 and have an hour or more then I highly recommend this place. Very unique, but everything is made from scratch and only one guy works in the restaurant. This place used to be Rosenburgs Deli (same guy who owned that) many years ago now.

Sams Steakhouse is well below average..

Agreed on Sams Steakhouse. I don't really care for Zamberletti's either. Too EXPENSIVE!

I might go out and try that Harry and Buds, it sounds really nice and there is only one guy working in the restaurant?

The most unique dining experience you will ever have in your life - 1 guy and very often NO menu. He will ask you if you want Black Bean or French Onion soup - both are top notch. He will bring you fresh baked bread with a special homemade sauce. He will also bring a salad - which is exceptional and will feature a "unique" block of cheese.

At that point he will ask you if you want him to make anything else - if you like omelets, then let him know and he will make you the very best omelet you have ever had. Or you can tell him to make whatever he wants and I assure you that if you are not a picky eater you will leave full and happy!

Keep a few things in mind: 1 Don't be in a hurry - he is on his own watch, it will take 60 to 90 mins. to eat at Harry and Buds. Two People will cost about $30 give or take 5$ depending on how well you tip someone for making homemade food. Last time I was in the joint I tipped him $10 on a $30 bill - it's really that good! If you are a picky eater then this is not a good place for you, also make sure you are eating on a empty stomach.

It's worth your time man - just make sure you call before you go. His web site says he is open from 10 to 2. But he usually get's in around 11:00 or so and when you call he will say, "I just got in, can you give me a few minutes" lol it's a one man operation! If you go please be sure to let me know what you think - it's my favorite restaurant to recommend, I love to hear what people have to say about it.
