West Vigo can win this by being the smarter team. Handle the traps and attack once its broken. South gave up 43 points to one player saturday. That guy is good, but he was the one who attacked.

If West doesnt handle the pressure it might not be a close game.

I think it's fair to say that if South shoots the 3 above 35% they have a good chance of winning, below 35% and they will get beat. You have to consider they are going to chuck it about 40 times and 35% should get them at or near a total that will win that ball game... South lives and dies on the 3, most of the time it dies on it.

Good point.

If any of you were a south parent, would you feel like your son was trained to be a fundemental player? Hitting alot of 3's is exciting, but do they rely on it too much? Curious for some other thoughts.

Not a parent but an alum and former basketball player at South and I can't stand it. I know a few Honey Creek middle school parents that were going into local gyms and just having kids chuck the 3 ball, because if you can shoot the 3, then you can play Varsity basketball at South. Look at some of the kids that they have on the floor, you'd be hard pressed to find a less skilled and less athletic team in all the MIC. They have kids playing Varsity basketball that have no business playing varsity basketball - they are playing for 1 reason and 1 reason only, they can shoot the 3. Obviously their are a few exceptions, the Smith kid and the PG are both solid players - other than that, totally unimpressed. If I played for Center Grove the other night I would have been embarrassed by getting beat by that South team.

With all that "trashing" being said, Coach Saylor is gone after this season and a new coach will come in. That could really change the entire dynamic and those parents that have kids at HC that have done the great favor of helping their kids shoot the 3 and nothing else, well that might not be enough in the future.

Although if one Chris Cassell applies for the job I am sure that the system won't change that much. Now I know Chris personally and he is a great guy - played golf with him a few times before. He was a good 3 point shooter in while he was at South, I have heard rumors of him applying for the job and if he does you have to think he will get it. The guy is as connected as you have to be in Vigo Co. to get a job like that. We all know that being connected in Vigo Co. is all it takes to get anything done... BOOM!

Chris Cassell used to be West Vigo's football coach. He led us to 2 undefeated regular seasons. He also led us to the sectional championship one year, where we got slaughtered by Chatard 55-7.

No - that would have been his father, Dave Cassell now the Terre Haute South womens basketball coach.

He is the golf coach at Terre Haute South and probably one of the best golfers in Terre Haute - was an excellent golfer at South and a pretty good basketball player. He went on to play college golf at Western Kentucky I do believe...

As a North alum, I'd be stoked if the Bravos hired Cassell.

How do you mean that? In a negative sense? Do you really (being this far removed from high school) still hold resentment for the cross town rival? I mean don't get me wrong I love it when South beats North, but I wouldn't wish any ill will toward any program at North. Maybe it's me still residing in Terre Haute and all - maybe not... Just curious as to your thought process?

Because in all honesty I don't personally believe that Cassell is qualified to be a highschool basketball coach in the MIC - but then again one would have to question decisions that have been made at Vigo Co. schools in the past... Just throwing that out their and don't have any intention on expanding on that statement.

Not ill will, just a friendly ruse. That said, I think they need to go through the process and not just hand the job off to a local -- haven't they done that enough to less than stellar results? There are a ton of great basketball coaches out there and I'm sure South could snag a good one.

Totally agree with that - it's a first class coaching job really. Coaching in the MIC is a big job to have.

I'll take the job, I might go apply for that job tomorrow. I could lead them to MIC title, and maybe even a state title.

Why they would stay in house for the basketball coach position at one of the biggest high schools in Indiana is beyond me. South is big enough, with enough tradition that it should attract interest from around the state, if not the midwest. If the VCSC had that mindset 25 years ago, Terre Haute would never have had Pat Rady and Jim Jones...

And do any of you think that Saylor's choice of strategy might be because he just has no talent in the South end right now? I don't know, because I've not seen them play in six or seven years, so it's an honest question. Unless you're Lawrence North or Bloomington South, recruiting isn't allowed, so you've got to go with what you've got in your pipeline. If there's nothing there, there's not much you can do about it...

You have had Jarvis, Odum, McGill. Over the last 4 seasons, they have had at least 2 guys 6'6" or bigger out there shooting 3's. IMO, they need to be under the basket posting up instead of outside the arc, but that's Saylor's gameplan, and it's easy for other teams to gameplan for it.
