"Terre Haute, IN: Home to the federal death row and Indiana State University, Terre Haute is also where several vocational schools, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, and the top-rated engineering school Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology are located. Last year, the city was named Indiana Chamber of Commerce’s 2010 Community of the Year, but it ranks consistently low on Internet forums and by college students."

Note, compared to most of the other schools, the author does not list what makes Terre Haute a bad college town, or does not link to any references. ISU-M also made the list.

Compared to the other entries it's a glowing account until the end. A poorly researched list by the looks of it.

I find it hard to believe that Storrs, CT is a bad college town. I love the line, "but it ranks consistently low on Internet forums..." Nice research.

Well, as we all know (since we're reading one right now), Internet forums are the storehouse of valuable, and accurate, information for today's society!

Thanks but no thanks... Not going to waste my time reading such material - really don't need the opinion of someone who has actually never been to school in Terre Haute and probably never been to Terre Haute in general to make a determination on what kind of a college town this is or a town in general...

Like it or not this is the reality that recruiting at Indiana State is and what ever promotion/marketing of Terre Haute and ISU we can all do will go a long way in breaking down this misconception of Terre Haute and ISU. It is equally important in getting the recruits to make the school visit so they can see for themselves. Finally, ISU has the rep of being a Commuter School which also does not help. It is also significant that the coaching staffs get the recruit that will fit the team but will also find the school environment to fit what they are looking for--which should be getting their education.

Like it or not it's not a misconception - it's a totally inept conversation, it's information being reported by people who have never even been to Terre Haute. Funny these are the misconceptions that you talk about - let's take a look at ALL the local talent that has been acquired in sports at Indiana State. Go down the line and look at these kids who have found Indiana State and Terre Haute (a place they were raised) good enough to go to school.

Terre Haute and Indiana State have not always been this way - it used to not be "cool" to go to Indiana State so like it or not your wrong. The tides have actually turned. How is a school that is seeing some of it's greatest enrollment increases in recent history, a city voted city of the year make a list for bad college towns? Makes no sense - sorry not worth my time to read. Again if you think this is the case ask all the local athletes that have stayed in Terre Haute to go to Indiana State to participate in athletics. Participating in athletics gives student athletes some sort of social status in a university setting, being a college town makes that more enticing for local athletes. Ask Kobe Kramer, Kyle Tony, Kylie Hutson, Erica Moore, Anthony Bertoli, John Lamburtus, Tayor Head, Andrew Sullivan, Kristy Twitchell, Adriane Wunderlich, Mel B, Kristen Weddle, Justin Gant, Jake Odum, Eitle brothers, RJ, Tyler Person, Jermey Lucas - that's the short list of names...

DO YOU WANT ME TO KEEP GOING? Are you going to tell me that all these local athletes are choosing Indiana State just because it's close to home? Just because it's an opportunity to compete in athletics? Give me a break - these kids are not stupid, these kids are elite athletes that could have gone to school and played D1 sports at colleges across the country OK - aks them if this is one of the worst college towns - not some article that some fool has written that has never been to Terre Haute or Indiana State.

BOOM!

SSOM, exactly the way I felt when I read it. Do your homework, THEN make a comment. Their conjecture is not true to form and unsubstantiated. They are just writing to rev people up, that's why it was a blog to begin with. No rules there!! My thought...who gives a shit what they think? We know what is true. We're heading in the right direction and all those positive things that are going on at Indiana State will turn the tides, and pretty soon at that~

Oh I totally agree "who cares what they think", I certainly don't I am yet to read the article and I really ignore things like this. But i'm not going to ignore people on our own forum who think for example that ISU has a rep. of being a commuter school. Does it really have that rep. or are you personally giving it that rep.? Because I will be flat out honest with you - I have never really heard that in my life. I know people who commute, but that statement couldn't be any further from the truth - for starters I have never heard that before and for closers it's just not the case. How do you have an overflow of student housing into downtown hotels and be considered such a school? Please explain to me? Indeed maybe it's more of a reflection of lack of student housing but I would contend that a school with 7 buildings (on my count) dedicated toward student housing (some of the largest buildings in Terre Haute), be it they were packed full with students and always are...

And what does "home to federal death row" have to do with ANYTHING? Are college students' odds of being put to death by the government increased by going to school in Terre Haute? Jeez.

Does Muncie really get 21 inches of snow?

I'd believe 2.1 but not 21...

Baylor, unhip? The typical Baylor student (i.e. GOOD Baptist kids) aren't worried about a party college...

Storrs? It's rural but people coast to coast KNOW about it, thank you Geno and Calhoun...

Who give a Rat's you know what about what people have to say about Terre Haute as a college town.

Terre Haute is great. My friends from back home are IU grads and they laugh at me when I tell them about how much fun I had at ISU...

Screw em.. who cares...

21 is the average snowfall for a winter. We had a lot more than that this past winter.

Terre Haute is a GREAT college town. I loved the fact that the University and Terre Haute is small. That allowed for minimal travel time to do any activity I wanted to do (sporting events, bars/parties, restaurants, movies, shopping) and as long as you're not a total douchebag, you can have fun and not get hasseled by the cops.

Hell, I was painted up and dressed in a cape my senior year and did a dive, tuck and roll headed to the Trike race right in front of campus PD (intoxicated, coming out of the Bally) and one of them gave me a high five, smiled and told me to be safe. I've had issues at bars at IU doing much less.

Anyhow, the common complaints about Terre Haute is that there is nothing to do. I would imagine that those that sit in their dorm rooms or that head home every weekend are those that are doing the bashing. On any given weekend, you can find a boatload of stuff to do. You have to make the effort to get involved or find it.

other than north crook (and it's lake effect snow...) I'm surprised that anywhere in Indiana AVERAGES 21 inches of snow; that's a lot, rain I would believe but snow...

Regardless, some would consider 21 inches of snow a PLUS!

Boda you are dead on! There is sooooooooooooooo much to do in TH! Something going on every day, every evening, etc. If you want to take the time to notice or look, it isn't just going to fall into your lap. There are presentation, speakers, musical performances, art gallery, museums, sports (HS and College, ISU, Rose even St. Mary's), there is racing, there are great parks, there are great golf courses, there is biking, there is cheap movies, there is cultural experiences, there are great restaurants, and the list goes on and on and don't get me started about students in the dorms!!!!!

So true Boda, the campus police was nice when I was a student the one time I got pulled over I ws headed home for a family emergency and I rolled thru a stop. In Gloomington that's a ticket no matter what, guy comes up to the door and I just said "Look man, I am sorry I am on my way home for a family situation." Guy could tell I was really frazzled. "Don't worry about it kid, just keep it at the speed limit and drive safely because if you end up hurt you won't get there."
