The Captain Level
Jake Kelly is a huge addition to ISU's men's basketball team. Having seen Jake play quite a few games in high school and college, I would say that he very well may be the best player to play at ISU since LB.

You don't often see 6'6" guards in the MVC, or any conference for the matter. Nobody ever talks about the defensive ability of Kelly. He will easily be our best defender and probably the best defensive player in the MVC. What excites me is that we have been torched by good SGs in the last few years (Eldridge, Korver(s), Eli, Crouch, Jacobson, etc.). Now, we have an extremely athletic 6'6"/long defender to put on these guys. I believe that Jake will have as big an impact defensively as he does offensively. He may also be our leading rebounder.

Another thing that excites me is the way that he is going to be able to open things up for some of our other guys..... There are two players that I think are going to individually benefit tremendously with Jake on the court..... First, Jordan Printy.....Jordan is at his best when he can "catch and shoot". He is probably the best pure shooter we have had for a long time (menser was pretty good, but he was better off the dribble). Second, Carl Richard. Carl is going to be able to run a lot more. I think this will allow him to play the offensive style he is used to. Carl is a great rebounder and will be huge for us this year.

Since Lathan hasn't played yet........ I can't predict how Jake will affect his play. However, I thought that Lathan was one of our best players in the scrimmage last year. Expect big things from him.

The only thing I am worried about is....... jealousy. Jake is going to play a lot of minutes/game (32-36). Lathan is also going to play a lot of minutes. We only lost one player from last year. Somebody is going to lose minutes.... Reed?? Carter?? Crawford??

I went to H/C and bought Paid for my Season Tickets last week . The funny thing is almost immediately after this decision was announced I recieved a call from the Atheletic office asking if i was was goning to renew this year . I just found it odd that right after this announcement they would call do you think its just coincedence or jumping at the chance tp maket them?

I think the backcourt of Jake and Lathan could be extremely athletic and downright scary. I don't envy McKenna and having to find minutes for all of the guys he has in the backcourt, especially since Reed played so damn well down the stretch.

That said, it will (or should) ultimately come down to camp and how kids practice. I know some of the guys have been here for awhile and have seniority, but we've got to put the best personnel on the floor to let us win ballgames. Hopefully guys didn't blow their summer and worked on their game otherwise you could see minutes slip from Harry or Reed.

And you're right about Kelly... he averaged like 30 minutes per game last year for the Hawkeyes.

If anybody has not seen Jake Kelly play....... Try to find a tape of his game against Penn State or Michigan last year..... Unbelieveable. He would be All-Big Ten this year, no doubt.

I love the picture of Jake with the bandage on his head.......

Jake is an excellent defender, great point! He is so much longer than people actually realize, he plays like he is a 6"8 guard.

You bring up some pretty good points - Jake has the ability to lead us in several categories, most notably (Points, Rebounds, Assists, Steals and Minutes). I think it's pretty fair to say he will lead us in at least 3 of those 5 categories with the ability to lead us in all 5, however if we are going to be good someone else is going to have to step up.

Everyone talks about putting to much pressure on this kid - after watching him play at Iowa, he plays better when the clock is winding down. I don't think he will have to much trouble with lofty expectations from an individual standpoint. We need some guys to step up their game to another level however. Printy, Martin and Carl all need to have big years!

Morgan, you have obviously seen him play....... I'm not sure this kid feels pressure. He has always been the best player on his team since I coached him in youth basketball camp when he was like 8. I pretty much made him what he is today!!!! Well, maybe not.... I will never forget, he used to wear Reggie Miller pacers wristbands. He was by far the best player his age even back then.

He is coming from a Big Ten school, there is no pressure here.

I think we may average 6000 fans next year...... We could have a great team guys....

I like this, it's quite obvious that he learned from the best! I don't think that our best season will be this year - you figure that Jake's SR. year Lathan, Richard, Printy, Martin, Odum will all be a year older and can all use the experience. I understand that we will loose Reed and Harry - but I don't think that is going to kill us. Granted Harry has developed into a pretty solid college hoops player.

Only time will tell!

Morgan,

Do you think that Odum will play this year?? As I mentioned in an earlier post, I think all freshmen may get redshirted.

Yeah I think he will red shirt... I have been trying to ask the right people to see if I can get a sure answer one way or another. My guess is they have a pretty good idea as to what they will do, however I am not sure they have let the players know anything. I think you have to red shirt Jake Odum. With the depth we have a PG, give him a year to develop a shot and his overall game - I suspect he will be your starting PG next year with Kelly at the 2 and Lathan and or Printy at the 3. With this line-up the following year you really don't need JO to be a socrer, just distribute the ball.

I would suspect that all freshman will red shirt - maybe not RJ.

Yeah, that's what they're going to do...have Jake Kelly red shirt just after he gets cleared to play this season...you're funny Morgan.

I know what you meant to say...it seems you're somewhat of an excitable boy (I'm a fan of Zevon) right now w/ the news of Kelly's clearance.

It's a song (and I'm 20 years older than you)...here's another reference from Tommy Boy that comes to mind when Tommy gets excited over a potential sale:

I'm like Jojo the idiot circus boy with a pretty new pet. Now the pet is my possible sale. Hello there pretty little pet, I love you. And then I stoke it, and I pet it, and I massage it. Hehe I love it, I love my little naughty pet, you're naughty. And then I take my naughty pet and I go
[makes ripping noises as he tears apart the roll]
Uuuuuuh. I killed it. I killed my sale. And that's when I blow it. That's when people like us have gotta forge ahead, Helen. Am I right?

Morgan hungry...Morgan want wingy...

all that is funny!!

Jake is going to be a tremendous, program changing addition to the Sycamores. There is no question. He will make an impact that is amazing. He brings things to a new level with his talent and ability. Anyone in the MVC that isn't worried about the Sycamores this season and the next several is incompetent

Jake said last night this (ISU players) is the best talent he's ever played with.
All 4 freshmen will be red-shirted.
Only 3 will return next year.
Kelly will greatly improve recruiting and that puts more pressure on current players.
We do nothing but get better.
After the great season we'll have this year, how do we keep McKeanna?
