With the public funding sounding like it has enough committee support, I think this sounds like a done deal. The question for me is how long do they stay in Oakland? They can’t wait for the new stadium to be built, so I’m thinking they take up residence in a AAA park temporarily?

Yeah, that's the rumor here. Which it would likely draw more than they would in Oakland and have less logistical costs since the workers are already in place for the Aviators.

I think it’s their only option. The attendance is already historically bad in Oakland this year…just wait to see what happens next year after this is already a solidified done-deal.

the fans have rarely been part of the problem in Oakland -- it's on the city (cities), bay area-counties and California; it's on the A's ownership and the feckless, colluding "leadership" out of MLB during the Selig Reign of Malfeasance and continuing through today's Manfred Morass

And the stories of the Aviators remaining in Vegas if/when the A's relocate are still being pushed?

when I was working at The Sporting News I used to go to Vegas every year to watch the Prospect League games. This was of course almost 30 years ago, but the minor league park where the games were played was very nice.

They won't be leaving. They have an absolutely beautiful ballpark in one of the more affluent areas of town. All of the land in the area was owned by Howard Hughes and has been master planned. It is situated right by Red Rock Resort, the Golden Knights practice arena and the mall. They also have been building up additional infrastructure as they just finished a massive office building and parking garage and still have quite a bit of land wide open for more development.

That is Cashman Field. It is no longer used for baseball. I believe they have soccer there now. The ballpark that the Aviator's play in our in Summerlin. It is much nicer than Cashman ever was.

Totally agree - they have great fans in Oakland. Always have. But, now that it’s known the A’s are moving NOBODY is going to the games this year. It’s for good reason, but the A’s can’t stay there past this year drawing only 500 fans a game.

Going back to 2001, the A's have never been in the top half of attendance and in most years they're in the bottom 4-5.

I get the easy narrative that the billionaire owner is the issue but it doesn't seem the fans have truly supported the A's since the Bash Brothers were there and Eck was saving games.

2001... isn't that the same timeframe when the owners started down the bargain rosters road?

Maybe, but they've put winning clubs on the field so there is no excuse. 10 times in the playoffs during that stretch and finished 1st/2nd in their division 13 years. So in the playoffs 43% of the time and finishing top 2 in division 56% of the time.

The fan base simply isn't there. So for them to suddenly care seems a bit much. Maybe they could have sustained some of those rosters if they had filled the seats?

True but IIRC, the bargain rosters weren't based in low revenue, lack of dollars but rather a frugal owner.

regardless, they're likely on the way out but Vegas summers are BRUTAL, as bad as Phoenix, ATL, DC...

one many days are they planning to use the retractable roof -- 95% of the season it'll be closed

I think spending on a retractable roof is a terrible idea. I would never go to a game if I knew the roof was going to be open and first pitch was before 7pm. Same reason I only go to Aviator games that start after that time. With the Aviators, the stadium also faces North-Northeast so at that time there is zero chance to be in the sun. The rumored orientation for the A's stadium would be West-Northwest which would have you in setting sun.

Also, the latest rumor is that he is trying to get to Vegas to sell the team. Especially if MLB waives the $1 billion relocation fee. Honestly could be a win-win if that is the case because Vegas has absolutely rallied behind the Knights.

Another tid-bit to remember is that the A’s were owned by Gary, Indiana’s own Charlie Finley.

Charlie had a large farm in Laporte, IN and would often have the team come there for barbeques when the A’s were playing in Chicago. The farm was along the Indiana toll road and had a huge “A” painted on one of the barn roofs........visible from a couple of miles.

Charlie had a simple formula for success. I don’t need to have superstars! But give me above average players at every position, and we’ll win. He was right. I remember Pete Rose mouthing off that they were a bunch of clowns with white shoes and handle-bar mustaches. Charlie and the boys showed everyone by winning 3 World Series titles.

don't the plans for the new Vegas stadium include a retractable roof? odds are they'll NEVER use it but it was included

not sure how finley's former ownership plays into the current mess but...

not exactly buying the 'above average players' but Finley had 3 Hall of Famers on those rosters; a Hall of Fame manager and a slew of All-Star players who may or may not be due 'increased scrutiny' for the HoF; doubtful but given how the Hall has tweaked their consideration all bets are off

I listened to the interview where Charlie made the comment about “the above average players”.

Wonderful... given that Finley was a salesman, aka "bullsh*t artist," I'm sure he said a LOT of things to people.

A's had some very legit talent on those rosters... pretty sure none (a few?) are banned from entry into the HoF
