There seems to be a lot of animosity towards Indiana University amongst ISU alum. How do you guys feel about IU?

Honestly, many ISU students are typically Purdue, IU, Notre Dame fans just because those are the dominant state schools. I think the animosity from Sycamore fans as pissed that IU refuses to play them after we cleaned their clocks. Could be wrong, but that's my take.

Honestly, because we're so close to Bloomington, every sport should play one another on a yearly basis IMO.

Think my screen names says it all...

Growing up; I was initially a UK fan (hey, I was a kid!); I followed a lot of Purdue but chose ISU over BSU (choice of majors available). iu wasn't an option because of the attitude/antics of bobby knight (or at least that's what my mother decreed). I still follow Purdue but will cheer for any school in Indiana except for notre dame (again hypocrites),
iu (bloomington and the regional's), BSU and USI. I guess I find the iu to be fairly hypocritical or they were when booby knight was the coach

Today, I abhor how the state of Indiana shoves anything/everything at iu and then Ivy Tech.
I firmly believe it's because 1. the majority of state legislators are iu alumni (whether they graduated from bloomington is irrelevant) and / or they are iu 'wanna-bes' and / or iu fans

2. Ivy Tech hired a fair amount of state legislators as Ivy Tech instructors and/or administrators.

My thoughts - athletics only (becuase I think they are a good school and have a lot of good people working for them). Being an athlete at Indiana State for the past 4 season I can tell you that nothing got me more excited than running at IU against IU runners. Why is this you say?

1. Because I grew up a Sycamore and we were always and still are lower on the food chain.

2. Only the best of the best get recruited by IU, and comming out of high school you would like to think you are the best of the best. Their is nothing better than going to IU and showing the "real deal" up.

3. IU hoops is overrated. One of my favorite hoops memories growing up was going and watching the Sycamores beat IU at the Hoosier Classic and the fans leaving in shock. I was only like 10 and talked mess all the way to the car!

Glad that me, my sister and parents are all Sycamores!

I remeber going to the ISU-IU in Hulma Center in 2002 when Menser hit that buzzer beater to beat IU. At the time we left and were walking around the concourse towards the doors outside the gym, when we heard the crowd go ballistic, so we walked back and we saw that Menser had hit a game-winnig shot. I was only 9 when that happened and remember that I was one of the biggest Menser fans.

any anomosity towrds iu is based on the attitude of many of their fans.....

i grew up liking things about iu...i watched iu basketball as a kid.....in the late 1970s...i watched all those bobby knight/burger chef basketball coaching tips on commercials and such.....i wasnt a great hoops player, but my affection for basketball largely grew from watching the old bob knight show and those coaching tips that he always had....i enjoyed watching his teams....

as for football, my uncle went to iu in the 1950s and took me to memorial stadium to visit when i was like 10 years old.....no game was being played...but we just walked around the stadium and took it all in.....

as i got older and was in high school, i knew people at iu....a high school buddy of mine went to iu to play football (dave "booty" stewart), so i became a fan just to follow his collegiate career.....after that, cam cameron went to iu...so i followed what he did as a player (football and basketball) and later on as a head coach.....

as i later went and worked in the indiana state athletic department, i became friends to a lot of people at iu.....i even covered some iu football and basketball games while writing for the tribune-star.....so i don't really "hate" the hoosiers, per se.....

but i do have a strong dislike for those "fans" who were/and are so overbearing....backing and supporting your school is fine and dandy...i wish isu had that kind of backing on a regular basis....but try to have some class about it....as the coaches used to say, act like you've been there before....

i well remember.....talking to isu fans who were in attendance at the ihsaa state basketball finals at market square arena.....when the isu basketball team was in the ncaa final four in the 1978-79 season.....when the score of the isu-depaul game was announced, and that the sycamores had won and would be playing michigan state for the national championship, a large contingent of fans at the game actually stood up and booed.....now were they all iu fans????.....a large contingent were.....

another example...when mike davis was the head coach, my fiancee and i were having dinner at a place in plainfield.....behind us were a group of iu fans.....talking about that day's game.....now the hoosiers won the game...but these people, both men and women, were uttering some of the strongest racial comments towards davis that i have ever heard....now he was the head coach at THEIR FAVORITE UNVIERSITY....IU WON THE GAME...and they were using every kind of derogatory language about mike davis.....i couldn't believe it....my fiancee and i paid our bill...i made an intentionally loud comment about iu rednecks...lol....my fiancee grabbed me and we left.....

but its that kind of behavior that just turns people off about iu.....is it fair to lump everybody together like that?....no, it isn't.....

and, as a former athletic department employee, here are a few other things that had us making cracks about iu.....the people that called our offices and wanted ticket or press pass information for iu games....we're two different schools folks....jeez....lol......or students that walked around the indiana state campus in iu/purdue./notre dame/ball state attire....you go to isu....try to support your school, will ya....lol.....and for the longest time, we couldnt get iu to schedule the sycamores in hoops....or later football.....my respect for bob knight took a dip when we played the hoosiers in their indy early-season tournament at market square arena....tates locke, a supposed friend of knight's, was the indiana state coach....iu was beating indiana state pretty handily as expected and the game was in its waning minutes....so what does knight do?...does he start substituting his players.....does he sit back in a soft defense in order to run out the clock????....nah...he keeps his starters in...and presses...full-court....just to rub it in a little bit more.....

so there are my feelings about indiana university and why there are negatives thoughts among some isu fans towards the hoosiers.

I HATE IU. There, I said it. When bad things happen to that school, I smile. Yeah, I'm a bad person, so shoot me. I almost hate Purdue as much, but not quite. They just don't make enough noise to keep me interested.

I am, however, a Notre Dame fan, having lived in South Bend for five years. You can't beat the atmosphere in South Bend on a home game weekend!!!! And I really like Lou Holtz...(plus, our beloved football coach coached at ND, so it can't be all bad...)

I hate IU because they (students, staff, faculty, fans) are unquestionably the most arrogant, illogical people you'll ever meet. My blood is only red because I can't change it's color. Did I mention I hate IU?

Living in Indianapolis, you'd be hard pressed to discover that any other universities exist in Indiana. ISU could win the NCAA championship in basketball, and the lead story on Indianapolis TV sports would be, "Tom Crean said today that his new recruits are all potty trained!" It's sick...

.....the people that called our offices and wanted ticket or press pass information for iu games....we're two different schools folks....jeez....lol.......

I've taught @ various public secondary schools throughout America (ND, TX, IN, FL) and you'd be surprised if 1/2 of them knew that ISU & IU were DIFFERENT schools. Yes, these people STILL think that Bird & '79 were IU & Bobby Knight and have NEVER distinguished between the two schools!:krazy:

I LOVE IU Mainly because I grew up in an IU family (dad, 4 sisters went to IU). And if I had been a better student in high school, I would have gone to IU.

With that said....

I'm a Sycamore....so if I had the option of watching ISU or IU on tv, I would choose ISU.

Go Trees.

and go Hoosiers too.

And with THAT said...

I think this is the first time I've ever mentioned IU on this board...I like discussing the Sycamores on SYCAMOREHOOPS.COM.
