any anomosity towrds iu is based on the attitude of many of their fans.....
i grew up liking things about iu...i watched iu basketball as a kid.....in the late 1970s...i watched all those bobby knight/burger chef basketball coaching tips on commercials and such.....i wasnt a great hoops player, but my affection for basketball largely grew from watching the old bob knight show and those coaching tips that he always had....i enjoyed watching his teams....
as for football, my uncle went to iu in the 1950s and took me to memorial stadium to visit when i was like 10 years old.....no game was being played...but we just walked around the stadium and took it all in.....
as i got older and was in high school, i knew people at iu....a high school buddy of mine went to iu to play football (dave "booty" stewart), so i became a fan just to follow his collegiate career.....after that, cam cameron went to iu...so i followed what he did as a player (football and basketball) and later on as a head coach.....
as i later went and worked in the indiana state athletic department, i became friends to a lot of people at iu.....i even covered some iu football and basketball games while writing for the tribune-star.....so i don't really "hate" the hoosiers, per se.....
but i do have a strong dislike for those "fans" who were/and are so overbearing....backing and supporting your school is fine and dandy...i wish isu had that kind of backing on a regular basis....but try to have some class about it....as the coaches used to say, act like you've been there before....
i well remember.....talking to isu fans who were in attendance at the ihsaa state basketball finals at market square arena.....when the isu basketball team was in the ncaa final four in the 1978-79 season.....when the score of the isu-depaul game was announced, and that the sycamores had won and would be playing michigan state for the national championship, a large contingent of fans at the game actually stood up and booed.....now were they all iu fans????.....a large contingent were.....
another example...when mike davis was the head coach, my fiancee and i were having dinner at a place in plainfield.....behind us were a group of iu fans.....talking about that day's game.....now the hoosiers won the game...but these people, both men and women, were uttering some of the strongest racial comments towards davis that i have ever heard....now he was the head coach at THEIR FAVORITE UNVIERSITY....IU WON THE GAME...and they were using every kind of derogatory language about mike davis.....i couldn't believe it....my fiancee and i paid our bill...i made an intentionally loud comment about iu rednecks...lol....my fiancee grabbed me and we left.....
but its that kind of behavior that just turns people off about iu.....is it fair to lump everybody together like that?....no, it isn't.....
and, as a former athletic department employee, here are a few other things that had us making cracks about iu.....the people that called our offices and wanted ticket or press pass information for iu games....we're two different schools folks....jeez....lol......or students that walked around the indiana state campus in iu/purdue./notre dame/ball state attire....you go to isu....try to support your school, will ya....lol.....and for the longest time, we couldnt get iu to schedule the sycamores in hoops....or later football.....my respect for bob knight took a dip when we played the hoosiers in their indy early-season tournament at market square arena....tates locke, a supposed friend of knight's, was the indiana state coach....iu was beating indiana state pretty handily as expected and the game was in its waning minutes....so what does knight do?...does he start substituting his players.....does he sit back in a soft defense in order to run out the clock????....nah...he keeps his starters in...and presses...full-court....just to rub it in a little bit more.....
so there are my feelings about indiana university and why there are negatives thoughts among some isu fans towards the hoosiers.
