Bally #50

The JSW Level
For those of you that attended ISU or played football for ISU in the late 60's and early 70's, former Indiana State standout football player, Dave McKenney, had a massive heart attack today at Orlando International Airport while traveling to that city from his home in Fort Lauderdale. They revived Dave with those electric paddles, which likely saved his life and he was lucky to be at a facility that had them. No major heart surgery but they did apply some stents to his heart and his condition is stable. He had open heart surgery earlier this year to repair a faulty valve. He is out of danger at this time.

Please include Dave and his family in your thoughts and prayers. If there are any changes in his condition, I will let you know.

AED Automated External Defibrillator one of the great advances in American Medicine. They have saved many a life - they've not only tooled Airports with them. Most police cars have them now also - nice for them to have espeially in Rural America when ambulance response times are often times slower than necessary...

Glad to hear it saved your friends life.

Thanks, SSOM, for the life of me, I could not remember what it was called. Since I survived a pretty serious heart attack myself 21 years ago, I too believe in them and understand their value.

God's Blessings for Dave and his wife. I got to know Dave away from the power of ISU Football and Fraternity life back in that time period by dating Dave's future bride's sister. For the younger people on here, you may never understand the dynamics and power of ISU Football, and Fraternity and Sorority Life on 6th St back in the day...it was huge...a lot of it very positve and of course some negative. None the less, Dave was a big part of all of that....and I'm glad that I got to know both sides of Dave....I especially like the cool and laid back side of Dave...get well my friend.

We just got 2 AEDs installed at my school, one inside my gym. I will be getting training in the next couple weeks. Hopefully I will never need to use one at a elementary school, but you never know.

Nice comments and I totally agree with you on life on South 6th Street back in the day. Gotta Hav, I might have asked you before, but we clearly have to know each other. Too many overlaps and I also have many friends in your house. (Not too many of my brothers did). I apologize if I forgot a previous conversation on this topic. It looks like Dave is going to be fine but as happens with these type of events, may need to alter some bad habits. As I had mentioned, he had some open heart recently and I would assume that took care of the issue but it seems it did not. Dave is recovering and his wife is with him and kids as well. He is one of the finest guys I know and also one of the finest brothers I have ever had. Hopefully life moves on without too many adjustments.

Dave (along w/ your other Lamda Chi honcho, Chas. DeMaio) sold me my 1st life insurance policy back in '73...helluva nice guy, an E-ville Harrison grad (although I didn't know him - Castle was considered a "rural" school back in the dayz, while Harrison was THE school). I'll call Miklozek & fill him in.

Hang tough, Dave. We love ya! Gotta watch that Cuban cuisine...and keep that SPF 50+ lotion nearby.

Sycamore Football players and friends: Sorry to hear this about Dave. He was one of our standouts from the 70's. A great teammate and friend. Loyal to ISU for sure. We just had our 40 yr. reunion of the 72' team and Dave was one of the leaders in putting this together. Let's keep Dave, Debbie and his family in our prayers for a full and healthy recovery.

RG, If you are "friends" with TJ's Football Alumni site, please pass it on. TJ asked me to post it there but I am not a current member and so far, I still can't enter a comment there. The good news is that he is stable. I should know more today. I hope to talk to Debbie.

As a Paramedic, they are invaluable, the key is time, faster the heart can get shocked from an appropriate rhythm the better the outcome.
Even though your in an elementary school you have older workers and visitors, and God forbid a freak event with a child. They should be anywhere public and people gather. They are easy to learn and we have recently had an event in the local school system with an AED and an employee.

truly lifesavers

As a corpsman (paramedic with a gun), these things are also idiot proof, the pads show you where to put them on the body and it speaks to you saying what to do...

Bob, I just posted. Thanks for the suggestion. Keep us posted. I left a message on his cell, but I didn't expect to get him. I'll give him a day off.

First I would like to start by saying That it was a releif today to read this to find out that Dave survived......

My family was traveling yesterday home from Orlando airport back to Chicago when my 8 year old neice noticed a gentleman go down and told her father that there was a guy on the ground that needed help. Her father rushed over to help as he is trained EMT and him along with a lady nurse did CPR on Dave for over 20 minutes while waiting on the paramedics to arrive, they had to shock him twice in the process. I am glad to see that all the prayers that were said for this man were answered. God bless Dave and his family, He will have a special place in my family hearts forever.....

Many Thanks to your dad (and the nurse). Glad you shared that with us. Your family will have a spceial place in our hearts as well. Not that it matters, what is your ISU connection?

From Debbie today (Dave's wife): 99% blockage in the artery behind his heart. Was airlifted to the hospital and getting him there might have saved his life. He's resting comfortably but did have 5 ribs broken during CPR. (That happens more than you think) but the guy had to be pretty BIG!!).

That is an amazing story. Talk about the right place at the right time? Rightguard and I have known Dave since the 60's so we can't tell you how great that news is. I will pass it on to Debbie as well.

Dave is doing well. Hopes to get out of ICU in a day and them about 3 days in a step down room to keep and eye on him. Hopefully home in 4-5 days. He is totally appreciative for all the attention he received at the airport and the hospital care that is getting. And a big Thanks to the Lord for watching over him.
