USI's endowment is 30 million dollars more than ISU's. How pitiful. ISU has been around since 1865 and I think USI has been around since 1963 or 64. The ISU foundation always claims that our endowment is so low because we don't have a law school or medical school and that the majority of our grads are teachers. Are the majority of USI grads doctors or lawyers?

They didn't take fundraising serious for the longest time. They lost out of decades upon decades of market growth and appreciation.

Didn't help, Doesn't help that a large number of ISU alumni are apathetic to the university in general

Does seem like the current Foundation team is making headway

I'm hearing that Lindenwood, which is a D2 on the northside of the St Louis area, might be announcing their move to the OVC next week. They have football, which is a sport the OVC needs.

More on the $$$ for ISU-E to 'leap' to Div I

"... Finally, a review of growth rates in overall athletics spending to academic spending (academic spending comes from the US Department of Education's IPEDS database) also demonstrates priorities. The median Division I NFS publics' growth rate of total athletics expenses rose 27% from 2011-2020, three times as much as the growth in overall academic spending of 9%, after adjusting for inflation. Spending more on athletics may be a greater priority for greater prestige than spending on academics..."

The athletes are still undecided... roughly split 50/50

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The University of Southern Indiana's move to Division I sports may have been a "now or never" proposition.
Or, at least, "now or wait a very long time." Insight into the timing of USI's jump and other details are apparent in a feasibility study released this week by school officials. The analysis and assessment report were submitted by The PICTOR Group, a Nevada-based consulting firm the university contracted to help with the process.

The report cited coming NCAA policy changes that could impact future Division I membership standards or impose a moratorium on allowing new members. "It will be essential that (USI) move quickly to secure a formal offer of membership with a Division I conference, and notify the NCAA of the (school's) intention to apply for reclassification to Division I," the feasibility study says. "The athletics strategic planning requirements for reclassification to Division I should get underway immediately thereafter."
The feasibility study identifies three Division I conferences as potential membership partners for USI: the Ohio Valley Conference, the Horizon League and the Atlantic Sun Conference. The report says The PICTOR Group initiated contact with each conference's commissioner. However, USI's athletic director, Jon Mark Hall, told the Courier & Press that the OVC had already reached out to school officials prior to the study. All three conferences were open to discussions on having USI join, consultants wrote, but only one — the OVC — officially made an offer, as confirmed by Hall on Feb. 9. USI joined the OVC that day.

Consultants noted that the OVC and Horizon League school athletics expenses were similar — though "significantly higher than the (Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference) — but that the Atlantic Sun Conference expenses were about $5 million higher.

Other financial issues were explored in the report. Two specific costs were mentioned: The NCAA's Division I application fee and a near-doubling of USI's athletics budget. The application fee was expected to be around $1.6 million, consultants wrote, and added that for USI to compete "successfully" at the next level, the current budget would need to be increased by $6 million, from its current $6.6 million level. The firm said USI's athletics "administrative and support staff is relatively small even for a Division II program." Making the money work will require community engagement, comprehensive marketing plans and other collaboration, consultants wrote.

"Additional (university) and external revenue sources will need to be identified andsecured to supplement the athletics budget," the study states. "The collaboration between athletics and central campus is essential for the external revenue expectations to be realized."

Facilities for some programs — such as track and field, tennis and soccer — would also need improvements to "provide the necessary training and competitive needs," consultants wrote. Other changes needed include enhanced ticket sales, sponsorships and licensing as well as a comprehensive fundraising plan. The report states that the plan should be developed "as soon as the decision is made public."

read any of the student's reactions on twitter? they're still split ~50/50 but luckily for the Trustees, it won't cost them a penny. They can just stick it to the students to bankroll their "dreams of prestige"
Nobody in southern Indiana cares about the students reactions... What does an 18 year old philosophy major collecting Biden's free money know about a transition to D1 athletics?

Read any of the stories? It's today's and tomorrow's 18 -yos that are going to pay for this move. The AD isn't, the trustees aren't - this move is going to be funded by the 18-yos

As if the AD & Trustee's don't have their collegiate administrative careers hanging in limbo over such a decision...geesh.

I don't understand what your beef is? This has been happening for a long time at universities all across the nation, Indiana State included. Student fees are used for all sorts of crazy ambitious ideas that universities have. Not saying that moving to D1 is a crazy idea. Oh, I personally like the idea for USI to go D1. What makes usi different from any other college or university? Not sure why you're so concerned about usi doing this when it happens all across the nation? Do you have a beef with this trend that has been happening the last 50 years?
Students can choose to go to whatever university they want. If they don't like the fees go to a college where athletics are non existent.
