The JSW Level
and he was talking to one of their assistant football coaches. They were talking about their schedule and the Indiana State game came up in their conversation.

I guess the assistant coach was quick to point out that ISU is a scholarship school and Butler wasn't. My friend was surprised that the coach brought that up so quickly in the conversation.

This game, along with Jacksonville playing Western Illinois and Morehead State against Illinois State, are big games for the Pioneer League in trying to sell their case for an automatic playoff bid. They have applied the last 2 years and have been turned down. If there is more expansion, chances are they will get a bid. Winning these games would support their case. We can't get complacent because these are the games that would be signature wins for them.

Don't like playing opponents who have an extra incentive for winning. Occasionally they put 4 quarters together that are way above their heads.

St. Francis. Anybody remember what happened in that game under coach West?

Yeah, but St. Francis was good and we weren't. Butler isn't that good and we're much better. It shouldn't, I stress SHOULDN'T, be a close game!

The way some of you are talking, you would think we spotted them 20 points to start this game. I don't believe this game will be close, not close at all. If we don't win by two posessions, I will be extremely disappointed.

I understand all that.....

The point of my original comment, though, was that ISU can't afford to look past Butler. After all, they are the "Duke of the Midwest."

Or is Duke the "Butler of the East"? I always get that confused.

Taken from "Tony Hinkle: Coach for All Seasons" by Howard Caldwell (1991)

"Not until Hinkle was in his final years of football coaching did an Indiana State University team beat Butler."

The 21st and last time that Hinkle beat IS was in '66.

I guess that Verbie, Brumfield, Knox & Keller & boyz put a stop to that streak...

OK instead of St. Francis, let's use Quincy--they had a losing record as an NAIA team the year we lost to them. Granted, we paid that back, but...
