Just for fun and since it's in football season I'm going to put this in the football forum. But which player is more valuable to his team, Shakir Bell or Jake Odum?

Both are great players, right now Shakir Bell is head and shoulders above any back I've seen in the entire country this year. You heard correctly, he's been the best back I've seen in the entire country this year. Bell became the fastest player in school history to 1,000 yards today.

Jake Odum - we all know what he can do and how important he was to the Sycamores in making the NCAA tourney. Without him it's probably a sub .500 team.

Ironic enough and lucky for us both players are just Sophs - them being around for a few more years really means good things for the Sycamore program.

Good question, but so hard to say. Might go with Bell if only because he is having a record breaking year.

Definitely easy to vote for Bell since he's in the middle of an amazing season, I voted Bell. But, would State have made the tourney last year without Odum? Doubtful.

Both are great players, both are playing on great Sycamore teams, and both are sophomores.

I hate to pick between the two, but if I HAD to choose, I would pick Odum if for no other reason than a basketball player can have a larger impact on his team than a football player. Basketball player is one of five, as opposed to one of eleven in football. Plus, Odum can have an impact on both offense and defense, where Bell cannot.

Thankfully we get to enjoy both for a number of years!

x2

You can also make the case that the PG is even more important in that respect.

It's a good problem to have, though :D

I'm not going to pick one. This is like deciding which of your gonads is most important to you, your right or your left.

I had to go with Jake Odum, just because of what he did last season. Bell is also very important to this football team, because without him, we probably wouldn't have 5 wins.

I would disagree because of the two games we have lost, bell really hasn't played...

Also should be noted that Odum hasn't started his sophomore season yet. No doubt both have plenty of weapons to help them. Amazing that they're only sophomores.

Great post - way to think about it logically!

Seeing as how Odum can play D and O you have to give him the nod right? I mean he did lead the entire league last year in steals. You know rushing yards is a glorified stat like scoring is to basketball. I think a player is judged more on total yards than he is on scores in football. So is it fair to say that scoring in basketball is = to rushing/receiving/passing yards in football?

If that's a fair statement then Odum is going to have a hard time winning votes. He brings more to the table than points - you have to give him points for his effort and leadership. In the same respect it's hard to say that Bell doesn't give you either of those things as well.

Sorry for making folks choose on this one, just a really good question that ISUCC posed to me this weekend and I had a hard time answering him. My only answer is/was "Give me an opportunity to make a case for Odum and I will find a way to do it". He gives me plenty of opportunity to make a case for him, it has more to do with that than anything else.
