With one of the best high school Quarterbacks right in our back yard, with his dad being a former ISU player back in the 1980's, why in the world aren't we recruiting Taylor Duncan from Marshall High School ? His numbers are off the charts...

Last year's numbers: 1921 Yards Passing 23 TDs / 997 Yards Rushing 14 TDs

I don't know anything about him since I don't live in Terre Haute anymore. With that many rushing yards it would appear he's a scrambler, is that right? Maybe as a QB he wouldn't fit ISU's offense. That's a complete guess on my part. I don't even know if it's true that he's not being recruited.

To good...

Well based on what I know Trent does not like to recruit smaller football conferences like the Little Ilini Conf. like Marshall plays in. That would be my only guess? Not that I agree with that philosophy, but I have heard some stories like this in the past... A kids coach calls on the phone asks coach if he is interested in said player and coach asks what class of football are we talking about here, coach responds with a lesser class and coach Miles states that he aint interested... High school players coach responds really, how many games has your program won in the last 5 years? I think you might want to act more interested in said player...

I mean the Johnson kid has pretty much fallen off the depth charts since his dad left the program. No doubt it doesn't help they added a division 1 QB. But all of the sudden the kid will probably not even travel with the team.

Oh and I think this kid could play hoops for the Sycamores as well, multi sport athlete for sure! RECRUIT HIM!

Who has offered him at this point?

Here is the truth about small school football. It is going to be hard to garner a lot of top level interest when you play small school sports. Matt King was arguably the best QB statswise in the state. He won't sniff the centers ace at ISU. The good thing for him is that he seems to be showing a lot of potential at the receiver position. But I would say that Matt King was recruited as an athlete not a QB. On that same point Matt Seliger played on a losing team in high school but they were the 7th or 8th biggest school in the state and they played in the toughest conference. He will probably be the no. 2 QB this year and rightfully so. I think he has done really well this fall, and what a true team player. Outstanding kid, class act.

We need to look for QBs from winning programs at the big school level. I'm still very concerned about the QB position; even though we have more bodies, can any of them really play? Eastern Illinois upgraded in a big way by adding Jake Christensen from Iowa. He puts their 2-year starter on the bench. We obviously upgraded by adding Chris Stutzreim, but he will have to stay healthy all year for us to even be competetive. Matt S. seems to be a good kid, and probably the correct No. 2, but still in way over his head. It was painful to watch some of the games last year, particularly WIU. I'd like to see a kid like John Whitelaw from Hinsdale Central in the Chicago area--a 3 year starter and the QB for the Class 8A runner up last year, who has all of one offer. Maybe he won't be available, but this is the kind of kid we need to look for--playing every week against teams with 2 or more DI players.

NSF,

I agree with you. EIU made a huge upgrade, as did ISU........ I think Matt S will be a solid 2. He shouldn't have had to play last year anyways. I agree, it was painfull to watch all of our QBs last year, but none of them should have had to play. Now, Matt S is a year older and Stutz is in his 3rd year of Division I college football. They should both be ready now.... Stutz is obviously ready and I think that Seliger is ready to be a solid 2 guy....

As far as Taylor Duncan........ His parents told me that ISU IS recruiting him. This was 4 or 5 months ago, but they confirmed it. Where are you getting that information? Don't be surprised if Duncan goes somewhere to play basketball anyways.

Yeah stark I spoke with some people after reading this post and it would appear that he is indeed being recruited by Indiana State! This is good news, sorry to express doubt in my previous post!

I do not convey sources, but he's not in any ISU's recruiting profile section, nor have I seen any carrot being dangled in front of the kid. He may have bigger fish tailing him (Eastern Illinois, Ball State, Northern Illinois, Indiana University), but I was only wondering why Indiana State recruits the Terre Haute schools, who haven't necessarily been successful in the MIC, but not the small schools in their back yard who have some diamonds in the rough. If the kid is a player, he's a player - doesn't matter where he goes to school. Take Mitch Snyder from Casey-Westfield. He led his team to the state final in Illinois last year and didn't get a sniff. Granted, he is an outstanding student and enrolled at Rose-Hulman, but there seems to be a bias against small school kids. Just because someone went to Ben Davis or Warren Central doesn't mean they're going to tear up the MoVal. We've seen what Lou West did with big school kids - I just hope this coaching staff recruits kids who are not only good students, they're fundamentally sound football players. A kid like Duncan may even put some more butts in Memorial Stadium...

The profiles I create in the recruiting section are of kids I know of, have seen or have had an email/PM sent to me telling me Indiana State is contacting them or they're interested in Indiana State.

... there seems to be a bias against small school kids...

There little doubt about that... It's a bias small school kids have to deal with. I can see where the coaches are coming from though. You have comparable kids (size, weight, stats, etc.) - one from small 1A and the other from 5A school. The kid that faced the toughest competition, week in and week out, will get the nod every time.

Unless, of course, they went to Heritage Hills HS...
