I never thought he was going to stay in D1 outside of going to a conference that plays the 16 seed games. Is it possible he is getting some sort of NIL? Even if it is just $5,000. If he is getting anything, that is just insane

Everybody should be getting something in NIL. Going forward, if you're D1 and serious about putting a roster together and competing, even at the Summit/MEAC level, you've got to assume $8,000-$10,000 for all 13 members is going to be bare minimum.
Strongly disagree. high prized recruits or transfers that have already produced at the D1 level should be getting something. Transfers that haven't produced at the D1 level or your typical high school recruits should be promised nothing with the opportunity to earn X.
There are many factors that go into a student athlete. Long term potential earnings at a regular job with a degree from "X" school. Long term potential earning playing basketball from "X" school either in NBA or overseas. Scheme fit. Personnel fit. Playing time. Distance from home (what are you looking for?). How is their coaching staff? are they going to develop me? are they good people? Are they going put me in positions to be successful in multiple ways? Do you want to ride the bench and be on a good team or be on a bad team and get plenty of PT and get a big payday next year? Do you want to be a on a team competing for championships? Or are you fine playing for a program that won't come close to any conference title? How big or small of a city do you want to be in? how is their fanbase? etc.
After asking all those questions and you make your decision on where to play basketball for anything less than $15,000 you have some bad people as your community and we probably didn't want you anyways. Money is powerful and everyone has a price, but if you are talking <$15,000, money should be near the bottom of priority list when it comes to where you are going to play.
Not saying this is the case here, but offering to forgo any NIL could actually keep you at D1 for schools that may not have a ton of funds but need a quality teammate that won't be an APR bog since we know Masen was the epitome of student-athlete.
Sorta of an "old school walk-on..." a kid who played the game b/c they loved it AND could excel at it and used it within a barter system for an education and a lifetime of networking...

Absolutely! I am happy he found a place to get some playing time and show off that shooting ability. Really easy kid to root for. Didn't work out here like he had imagined (although being apart of a 32-7 team is special) but really happy to see him have a solid year for a solid team. Really one of the more surprising results from our transfer out list
