When did Butler move back up to D-I FCS? I'm no expert on their team or conference, but hadn't Butler dropped down to D-III (or its equivalent) for a while?

Division I in one sport, division I in all sports. ISU should win this game. Anything is possible like the Quincy game 2 years ago. But, remember how hard the boys had to work to lose that game. It won't happen again. Go Sycamores! Be TUFF.

Butler became what many called 1AAA a few years back and are basically D-1 non scholarship in FB. They have always been D-1 but many schools (mostly the size of Butler, Drake, and Dayton etc) decided to drop the scholies but were allowed to maintain their D-1 status. It is confusing because on paper, we are both FCS but without an "asterik." Like all football games, ANYTHING can happen if you are not physically and mentally prepared to play. My guess is that this game will be not as demanding as the Quincy game because that level of ball can be very deceiving. My guess is that coach will have the Trees ready to play.

DI-AAA is a term used by the NCAA to refer to Division I universities that DO NOT sponsor a football program whatsoever.

That is not my understanding but it isn't important. They don't use the 1A, 1AA, and 1AAA designations anymore anyway.

Postscript:

lc83, funny... I thought I would research that question and first off, it was NEVER an actual classification to begin with, so I doubt there is a real answer. I found multiple "experts" that said that 1AAA was D1 no football and I found some that said the the Butler and Dayton's of the world were listed as 1AAA, D1 no football scholarships. So no winner here, we'll have to comiserate over a beer at the Bally.

The NCAA changes it's nomenclature like indecisive folks change their minds. The easiet way to see what they're called is to go to their stats page -- that shows how they're "currently" classifying them.

Damn, that's a cool site. I bookmarked it in about 5 seconds. By the way, Boda I will re-up my money for SP next time I see you. I know you don't like golf but are you coming out to Eagle Creek for the post party for the golfers on Monday?

Ouch!

NCAA formed in 1906
NCAA begins classifying football in 1937
- University Division
- College Division
NCAA expands/clarifies in 1973
- Div I
- Div II
- Div III
NCAA divides Div I into two sections in 1978
- Div I-A
- Div I-AA
NCAA renames Div I football in 2006
- Div I-A = Div I-FBS
- Div I-AA = Div I-FCS

So, it's 4 changes since 1906 or 3 since 1937; either way one change ~ 25 years... Not THAT indecisive.

Anyone remember who pushed the change TO FCS & FBS? Schools or NCAA? FBS crowd or us?

That's officially. However, it must be a news reporting thing I'm thinking of. I've seen FBS/FCS and Division IA/IAA go back and forth multiple times since the late 90s when the BCS was put into play.

Yeah, probably; doesn't help that BCS / FBS / FCS are so similiar AND that since the BCS (aka Bowl Coalition, Bowl Alliance) came to be that ESPN (and the rest ONLY want to talk about the BCS bowls. Not a fan of FBS/FCS, lotta casual fans don't know FCS and when you explain Div I-AA you get eyerolls...

That was the GOOD thing about pre-BCS days; you HAD to watch/follow all of the bowls and hope this team lost or won to see how the polls ended -- FAR more interesting than now.

Really hate that BCS has migrated to the MBB tourney -- typical ESPN...

I use to say that the BCS had nothing to do with ncaa division I basketball. I have recently changed my tune slightly. The one connection I can see is that the big east would not be a BCS conference if not for their big market/high profile basketball teams.

Our offense scores at will. Our defense terrorizes the bulldogs all afternoon. Trees win in a romp. The whole team is out for blood after getting beat up at Penn State.
