P6 schools play think of mid-majors as their early season OOC "fluff games"

Our early season "fluff" games included 3 MAC teams (Toledo, Nothern IL, Ball State).

Make of that what you will.

Yet the MAC just raided a conference that raided the MVC. The MAC wouldn't even consider ISU in its current state, so if the MAC is so awful then what does that say about ISU?
Went to Ball State...in no way do I want ISU even thinking about the MAC.

It's a football first conference...basketball in the MAC is an afterthought at best.

The only reason that The MAC was able to raid UMass is because UMass is valuing football above every other sport, including basketball. UMass is already FBS and was previously in The MAC, so it makes sense. For every sport besides football, the move is a step down for UMass.

Does it really matter that they're slightly worse in basketball? The MVC isn't exactly stellar in basketball anymore either. We could end up with 28 wins and still not make the tournament. That's why schools like Missouri State and Illinois State have somewhat been flirting with the idea of moving on at some point.
Missouri State and Illinois State have been flirting with the idea strictly because they want FBS football.

They are 24th? Holy shit. I don’t want to be playing Miami Ohio or Western Michigan twice a year. At best, let’s just keep scheduling MAC teams to give us a 300-500k check after our football games

No. It isn’t the reason

ISU’s current state… 2 MVC Titles in Indoor Track. Coming off a Title in Baseball and on a path to be in the conversation again. On a path to winning the MVC Basketball Championship.

Let that sink in. Only program that annually doesn’t perform - football. You guessed it.

Realignment has nothing to do with track championships and baseball championships. Basketball only moves the needle for non-football leagues, but as you've seen with UIC and Loyola, market is often viewed as more important than basketball success. For leagues with football, football brand and potential is the #1 factor followed by market; while basketball is barely even on the radar.

If the MVC was still getting 2+ bids almost every year they wouldn't even consider moving to the CUSA or MAC. Now that we're a one bid league almost every year they don't view those leagues as a downgrade anymore.
...yes they would, because MSU has been talking about this stuff even back in the days when the MVC was getting 2+ bids every year. It's strictly about wanting FBS football. The MAC is a MASSIVE drop off in terms of basketball.

It makes sense why a school may prioritize FBS football over basketball. It seems dumb, because MSU isn't any good and can't get fans as it is and G5 FBS probably isn't going to mean all that much in 4-5 years anyway unless you're P2/4. You're already seeing that with attendance issues in the MAC.

Unless you're a current P2/4 school, schools need to take a hard look at what they care about and focus on that. Butler is smart. Focus heavily on basketball while football is a fun thing to take your kids to on a nice autumn Saturday and not really care about the outcome. It's like minor league baseball. Have a couple hot dogs, have some beers, kids get some autographs, who cares about the score.

96’ it’s time for you to stop this nonsense seriously. You’re trolling at this point for entertainment purpose. Bring realistic solutions to the table or just move on buddy. Thank you in advance.
I am being realistic. I said the MAC wouldn't consider inviting ISU in its current state. There's nothing controversial about that.

These two schools (foolishly) think football is a good investment and are only considering moving to any conference that can get them into the FBS.

It will backfire on them very shortly and they will wish they never made the move, but by then it will be too late.

The MAC is a terrible league for every sport except football, and it’s not even that great at football.

Any way you slice it, it would be a monumentally foolish move and any AD that says otherwise should be fired on the spot.

Well yea if it’s all about football then we will be lucky if a division 3 conference lets us play.

Going to the MAC would be as bad of a decision as hiring Deb

MVC is 9th in NET. MAC is 24th in NET. Joining the MAC would be brutal and suffocate my interest in MBB.

The MAC hasn't gotten an at-large bid since the 20th Century and has only won 3 NCAAT games in the past decade.

And why is that? Because all of them bought into "MACtion" and set fires to piles of cash thinking football is doing something for them. NIU had that one good run and all of them got drunk off the fumes. Then the CFP quickly updated the rules to make sure they'd never have another issue with that.

I doubt they'd regret it too much after we replaced them with the KC Roos and Milwaukee Panthers.

It’s sad to think about how good the league was in the 1990s and early 2000s in basketball. Gary Trent, Earl Boykins, Bonzi Wells, Wally Z. Kent State and Miami making Elite 8 runs.

And now they pissed it all away.

But they do get to play in the famous Idaho potatoes bowl. And I’m sure that brings just as much recognition as a sweet 16 run

At least those schools would be smart enough to avoid wasting money on football

Still would be a better basketball league than the MAC

When Pearl was at UWM they were better than any team Missouri State or Illinois State has put on the court in the last 2 decades.
