ISU’s current state… 2 MVC Titles in Indoor Track. Coming off a Title in Baseball and on a path to be in the conversation again. On a path to winning the MVC Basketball Championship.

Let that sink in. Only program that annually doesn’t perform - football. You guessed it.
Wow. 2 titles in indoor track. That should bring the crowds in.

The argument is get rid of football no matter what their record is because they lose money. How much does the track and field team cost ISU? We can throw all those available resources forwards the basketball team. Any revenues to speak of?

Good try… throw money at football and still consistently lose. You guys make it so easy when you just give the same tired rebuttals - it just recreates the platform to further exploit football.

A lot of differences to speak of outside of the fact that one sport Track & Field historically is our most successful and it’s not particularly close.

The other sport football historically speaking is our least successful sport and it’s not particularly close.

Tack & Field have the newest and most recently renovated facilities both indoor and outdoor behind the Hulman Center which was most recent.

Football has the worst facility of all our sports programs.

Track & Field/Cross Country have one of the largest alumni donor bases at Indiana State. That is without including the Gibson Family gave a million dollar gift to help make the outdoor track facility a reality. same Gibson family that is the most influential donor and name in this community. He’s not going to let anything happen to that program.

Track & Field/Cross Country are basically grouped together and we have one of the top Cross Country courses in the nation. Revenue from hosting MVC Championships, NCAA Regional and NCAA National meets comes to Indiana State in addition to the funds awarded by the NCAA to help host such large scale meets.

Probably not much if any revenue from T&F, but if you just took their cost of operation divided by number of conference championships, I am sure they are a hell of a lot more cost efficient than football is per win. @SycamoreStateofMind you have any idea of operational cost for T&F?

I mean it’s got to be pretty low - but probably more than you’d imagine.

Coaches salaries, Bus & Hotel costs, athlete per diem, maybe a few new pole vault poles, all athletes on scholarship get a pair of running shoes and a pair of spikes and meet entry fee’s of which we off-set a few times per year by hosting ourself.

So for instance when you go run a meet at IU or Purdue or IL State you have to figure hotel, bus and athlete food $$ are pretty minimal. They only go out to Iowa a couple times per year maybe twice indoor and twice outdoor.

But really it doesn’t even matter because of everything I stated above. The only program in real jeopardy is football and the only programs that are safe are Basketball, Baseball and Track/Cross Country. That’s just the hard facts.

No I don't think that's the argument. If ISU had success in football I think FAR fewer people would want the program cut.

It's that they lose money, they're expensive, and they're historically terrible.

And considering that the NCAA scholarship cap for Men's Track + Field + XC is 12.6, I'm sure part of those costs are defrayed by tuition money that the student athletes are paying to attend. You also can't cut the Women's program because of Title IX. If the total track, field, and XC budget was 1/10th of the football budget I'd be shocked.

Bingo. Provided success was accompanied by some semblance of financial solvency.

T&F/XC also has a very sizeable donor base of its former athletes. Most of them are thankful for the opportunity they got. I also believe they self raised (or damn near it) several of their facilities upgrades in recent years.

Anyhow, anyone trying to compare revenue versus non-revenue sports are either willfully ignorant/disingenuous to what is being discussed or they are several steps slow mentally.

Some games of note tonight in the Valley

Bradley hosts SIU. Both teams looking to keep their respective positions of 3rd and 4th. Belmont goes to Murray State where they will be fighting for the 6th seed. If SIU and Belmont lose, it sets up a ‘winner-take-all’ matchup vs. UNI in Carbondale for the fourth seed.

If Bradley wins, they lock in 3rd place. Drake locks in 2nd seed with a win. I also believe we lock in 1 with a win because I don't think Drake could pass us in NET if we lost the final game of the year. SIU is the team with the most to lose as they have Bradley tonight and UNI on Sunday. If they lose both, they can fall all the way to 6th IIRC.

Everything below still has multiple paths to move around.

A win tonight should in theory lock down the 1 seed, but we are close enough in the NET to Drake that with serious nonsense happening on the last game day of the year, and with who Drake and ISU have to end the season, it could get tighter than would be ideal.

There's no way Drake can catch us in the NET. You worry too much.

I think we were up 15 spots. You typically drop 2-4 with a loss but since the teams that would be a compounding factor for them at teams they play -- like Bradley on final day, I don't think it is mathematically possible, especially after we win tonight.
