He’s going to need to have a big off-season as far as development goes if he’s going to “put up good numbers” here… Even though we turn over nearly our entire roster Graves is out looking for experience (juniors and seniors) - Shetler is going to have to out play them for minutes. Not to say he can’t - but I don’t think anything is guaranteed for him. He’s in a really difficult spot IMO. He just needs to work on his body and his game this off-season if he wants to “put up numbers” at this level.

Selfishly, I want him to come back and compete for those minutes because kid can shoot it. If he can figure out the rest he could pop - no doubt. But it isn’t going to be easy for him if we’re being honest.
If he wants easy, he shouldn't be D1.
He's been here to see what it takes...if he puts in the work he will get his.

And at the risk of taking A LOT of heat on this next one.... after watching practice film (and yes I am aware it is practice film), I wouldn't mind having Kid back.

I get it. That wasn't really a shot at Eli - more so at any of our fans that are thinking, well we turned over all of our roster so he should get an opportunity to play if he comes back. I don't think it will be that easy because I think we are going to bring in some pretty experienced players - to get minutes he's going to have to out play them. Luckily, since all these guys will be playing together for the first time, Graves is going to have a much deeper bench (especially early on) that we had last year. So I think guys will get an opportunity - they just better play well when their number gets called.

It'll be interesting to see after the dust settles how many players improved their playing time or level of play and how many just got a slight bump in Nil money.

I know we should be patient, but it is frustrating. I know EVERY player that has visited IU. Why can't our visits be made public?

Because our genius of a former coach announced to the world how much our NIL fund is so if our visits get announced and it is someone we're competing for with our peers that may be better funded, it is possible they could snipe them.

Do you know how big Ball State's NIL fund is? How about Drakes? Toledos? There is a reason for that. The data can only be used against you.

If the Portal closes on May 1st, about when does a player need to declare he would like to return to his current school if there are not better offers out there for him? I believe summer practice sessions start around June 30th don't they? At that time, rosters and scholarships are likely full. Plus, if their former school has signed or recruited around them, would not Division II be their only option? Or at worst, as we saw last year, many players did not even return to ever play at all.

Portal closes on May 1st and after that, only grad transfers can enter. For high schoolers, I believe HSers have up until the middle of May to sign.

Technically there is no timeline for transfers to sign. But yep, you're 100% right in that coaches want their guys in for Summer because many take classes so they can have a lighter load during basketball season.

The problem for us we don't know which players jumped into the portal by their own choice versus those that the staff maybe did not want back. If there is a player of ours that went in by choice and wants to come back, it is up to Graves to re-offer them a scholarship for next year. It is akin to quitting your job before having a new one lined up in some cases.

I know Merritt Alderink didn't ask for his release but wanted to visit SLU, however he isn't mentioned anywhere as actually having a visit scheduled. They have 5 open slots and have three players scheduled fo visits this week. Hoping he ends up back here.

So right now the roster looks like this to me:

PG: None
SG: Wagner, Bean
SF: Summers
PF: Gray, Daughtry
C: Vorst

Or bucketized for "positionless" like this:

Playmakers: None
Wings: Gray, Daughtry, Wagner, Summers, Bean
Bigs: Vorst

As you can see, we need a couple playmaking guards that can shoot the rock.

I just watched some Summers videos. I think he has PG skills. He looks every bit as good as Henry and a better shooter.

I know nothing about Wagner as a PG.

We have the Point Guard from VMI, Cook I think, on campus this weekend. So HCMG is on the hunt for a point. Now that coach Slessinger is official, hope we can go full force on the Big from New Orleans Bobby Cannon that is in the portal.
