2024 Offseason Coaching Movement

WANTED: Passionate Sycamore Fanatics. That You?

Register NOW to join our community of die-hard Sycamore fans.

It’s crazy for me to wrap my head around the comment that one coach has already interviewed and others have been in contact. The timing of interviewing and contact in season while most names on this list have teams in contention for an NCAA tournament berth.
My money here is on Hurley. It's pretty widely known that the ASU thing isn't working out and he isn't happy. I'm guessing they aren't thrilled either.

I think this year has shown what many on here have known for a long time. You can build something special here at Indiana State, and I think Schertz sees that. We have a beautiful facility in a great location, we have some legendary names any program would kill to be associated with (mainly Bird and Wooden. But you have the Walker story, Duane Klueh, Jerry Newsom, Carl Nicks, etc.), Prior to this year we did have a solid fan base given our lack of sustained success. But this year has shown what the fanbase can be; you CAN sell out Hulman, you CAN bring out donors, you CAN ignite a community, and you CAN get the attention of the nation here. ISU is sitting in a BASKETBALL community, in a BASKETBALL state with great recruiting grounds within a few hour drive (Chicago, Indy, Louisville, St. Louis). Now with a salary and NIL near the top of the MVC you have a very attractive job.

I'm with "Team SSoM" on this. I'm going to sit back and enjoy every day, hour, and second of this season. Nothing more - nothing less. The diehards on this board have been pouring in all their time, talent, and treasure for years, and now the community and alumni are starting to do the same. I have all the confidence in those behind the scenes to help ensure the pieces of the program remain, and are sustainable. On a side, it may be a good thing that HCJS' son is on the team. It is clear Jaden is close to everyone on the team, they support him, and I'm sure coach values that!

Don’t blast me 4Qr and SSOM, but, my brother who lives in ChiTown mentioned (mentioned you jerks) Brian Wardle is working on a deal.

I'm not too sure DePaul is a better job than ISU, Bradley, Drake, etc. yeah, the money is better, but taxes and cost of living will eat at that pretty quickly. But there just is no evidence that you can win at DePaul at a rate that will keep you off the Hot-seat and ruin your career going forward. I don't know what DePauls NIL is, but if it's not near the top of the Big East you have no chance of competing in that league.

Appreciate everyone's perspective. I admit to slightly panicking after reading Trilly Donovan's coaching update, but yeah, believe coach is staying with us at ISU. Too many reasons to stay, and it would be out of character for him to depart so soon. 13 years at D2. Glad to hear influential people behind the scenes are working on the long-term for HCJS & ISU Bball.

Not giving this any more thought until April 8, when our season comes to an end. ☝️🤞

The bottom line is that there is always going to be a bigger pay day somewhere else for a mid major coach that is winning at a high rate and for a mid major player that is performing at a high level. My hope is that the coach and the players on the roster like being at ISU and in Terre Haute enough to want to stay. If the coach or a player wants to leave they're probably going to want to make sure that wherever they're going is the right fit. Just because the money is better somewhere else doesn't always mean that the grass is greener. For example DePaul is one of the last places I'd want to coach or play at.

Deal with DePaul? He is currently at ~$820k at Bradley and the last DePaul salary was $1.2m. I don't think DePaul is a better job than Bradley, but they better bump that salary to close to double if I'm considering it. Chicago or Cook County also has an addition 1.5% tax IIRC.

Only way that makes sense is if there is some friction at Bradley with the AD or administration. 3

Didn't want to start a new thread, so posting in here. Coach says the last couple years probably has been his most fun since his son is on the team. Also, some good quips about genetics and hair.

I’m sure they are raising the salary from the last coach, but, as I said, it’s a rumor.

It was talked about in mid January over on the Bradley board so it seems to be well known. All I'm saying is DePaul has been where coaches careers have gone to die so if I'm taking the job, I want a significant pay increase and contract length to protect the career risk. You may not get another gig if you go there and don't succeed.

I agree with you Jason, but until Josh showed up, couldn’t it be said ISU was also a place where coaches careers go to die looking back at the coaching history. You didn’t see many schools beating down our coaches doors recruiting them.

While I understand what you're saying, it's really not the same at all.

DePaul is a high major Big East job where you're compensated at $1.2m per year. The Big East is considered one of the premiere basketball conferences and has 10 NCAA championships (1 vacated) with 8 of them being since 1999 versus us being a mid-major program. Any AD worth their salt would be able to compare apples to oranges during their evaluation process.

If I'm Ohio State, I'm handing Kelvin Sampson a blank check and telling him to write his number there. If he turns it down, then I FedEx the check over to Greg McDermott.

The only thing keeping Sampson in an NCAA job is the fact that there aren't any NCAA regulations at this point.

Given his past, only a program like Houston would hire him; he'll fit right in the "culture" that is Ohio $tate athletic$ -- the program that brought you the following:
* Woody "Punch 'Em if you Want" Haye$
* Jim "Tattoo$ here, Get your Tattoo$ here" Tre$$el
* Urban Meyer
* Jim "I didn't see the Doc grab his junk" Jordan
