So something like the ragin’ Cajuns classic with a game against them and Utah tech? (Both teams are guesses).

Louisiana tech invitational?
See ya at the SELA?
Mcneese State challenge?
Southern Brawl?
Who would’ve thought Northwestern State is in the South Classic?
Warhawk weekend?
I like how you think, however, I'm hoping for the University of New Orleans Privateers Punch-Out. (since we have the Coach Slessinger connection)

Though, that would negate the aspect of the MTE not being at a destination city.

We need to do this yesterday.
The few conferences that we would do this with aren't interested.
(MWC, A-10, Conference USA, American, West Coast)

Why wouldn’t we do Summit, Horizon, ASUN, OVC……? Are we too good? If we wind up with more than one tomato can on the schedule it will be pathetic.

Because you only do challenges if it’s going to help both conferences. Those that you listed were the 16th, 19th, 20th, 24th and 28th ranked conferences. We were 10th/11th ranked. So MVC wouldn’t gain anything from playing those conferences unfortunately. Scheduling is what the NCAA made it. I will never see value playing a quad 4 Chicago State over a solid Mid Major no matter what metric they make up or try to spin it.

You wouldn’t want a whole league playing the mvc. But I think there’s a way to cherry pick a few leagues that would agree to allow their top schools to a bracketbusters style matchup once the net is revealed and you have a better idea of what teams are good. I think one of the march to the arch podcast guys eluded to something like this and it’s been on my mind for a few years. Leagues need to get creative and be willing to be flexible late in the year. I dont know if that means scrapping conference games but you need to give the schools who are on the fence a chance.

Figure out how to game the system (even a tad) and call it the Netbusters or something. 🤔

We should do a challenge not to help our NET but to have a home game against a D1 opponent that doesn't cost $100,000.

I think we gain not playing Eureka and St. Louis School of Health and Pharmacy in the same season. We all know if we don’t win Arch Madness we’re not dancing. Ever. Our schedule should get us ready for the MVC.

Agreed, but the reason why is those games do not get held against your metrics win, lose or draw. They get put into a Non-D1 bucket and thus don't pull your averages down like playing a LM would. I absolutely hate it myself but until there are scheduling mandates, you have to play the game.

The NCAA is corrupt to its core, and scheduling doesn't mean jack. Other than on fan forums, of course. We could beat Duke this year, win the conference, and lose in the Arch Madness title game and we'd still go to the NIT. Because the comittee would just say that us losing to Bradley in Peoria cancels out the Duke win. Or whatever rationale they want to use.

This would only get fixed if the NCAA takes over scheduling and has rules like 1) all teams play equal number of home and road games, and 2) games are drawn randomly or done via algorithm. That will never happen because Greg Sankey and his Big 467 counterpart don't care about the sport, they only care about their bottom line. Hell, schedule like the NBA does. Won't ever happen...

I mean it sounds good but how do you determine the cut off? Not every conference will have the same amount of good teams so it would get tricky. I think the major issue would be just getting other schools on board.

Somebody could figure that out. Like everything in life you can never make everybody happy but eventually the commissioners should do something. Cutoff should be somewhere around the quad 2 net range. That would never guarantee it stays there but you have to draw the line somewhere. Either make it part of non con or sacrifice a conference game if you have to. Make valpo and Evansville play each other 3 times to give your best teams a shot at the best mid majors available later in the season when things start to take shape. You can typically find several mid majors in the top 100-135 of the net so get them together and scrap your least important games somehow.

Just out of curiosity, can anyone ballpark a cost/revenue for having our own 6-8 team MTE?

I used to think there was a way to fix college basketball, but I think the system is so broken that it would be nearly impossible to fix at this point. The top 4-6 conferences hold over 90% of the power and they aren't interested in changing anything, other than creating more spots and generating more revenue for themselves. The only fix that will make mid-major basketball interesting again is if we end up having our own separate post-season tournament at some point in the future. I'd like to see how our league's top teams do against top teams from other MM leagues, rather than watching them get boat raced by some power conference team in the first round that can afford to pay their roster and coaches millions of dollars.

I can’t do that, but it seems we would have to come out ahead. Even if we only broke even on the tourney part, the lack of transportation, food, and lodging costs at a “destination” site makes it a win.

I assume sponsors would be called upon to help with housing of other teams, if that’s how that even works.

We clearly can’t find or aren’t wanted for things of this sort, considering we have been taking events that aren’t even actual tournaments.

It’s all about finding a promoter to do it that has their own streaming service (think Flohoops) or a good relationship with ESPN. They front the money and take the risk and make a profit selling to the tv or streaming service as well as a piece of the action on vacation packages to tropical destinations and maybe the gate.
