Playing center in modern basketball, and especially the system we want to run, is much more difficult than being a true big of old that is expected to sit under the basket and bang. The 5 in our system needs to be able to be a hub, to be able to shoot, and ideally get a bucket whenever we need one, which is not an easy adjustment for many, as Harding found out.
That's team offense, not big man skills. But, yes.

Yes, and Harding and JD had different roles. Interesting that it seemed we had two offenses for 2 different centers. A good coach designs an offense to put players in position to utilize their particular skills and score.

We didn’t have two different offenses.

We had a guy who could not play with the ball in his hands and struggled to finish at the basket so the rest of the guys on the floor with him had to play differently when he was out there.

If he returns next year he either has to get much better with the ball (ball handling, passing) and finishing, or he can only avg about ten min a game tops or we will struggle.

Vorst is a perfect example of why we need a coach who has experience developing big men. Do we have that person on staff?
Former NBA Center Clifford Ray (Golden State) has been a "go to" guy for coaching bigs for years...he's developed guys like Al Jefferson, Kendrick Perkins, Dwight Howard. There are guys who specialize in developing big men. Ray specialized in defense and rebounding technique.

We need to just follow the St Mary’s coaches to Australia and/or Eastern Europe and recruit the same guys they do. The Gaels always have a couple of 6’10” guys that are comfortable with the ball in their hands with great court awareness

Best news of the weekend! Really wanted Vorst to return! When healthy, was encouraged to see his progress this past season, & can become so much better.

Wishing DV a great off-season: Increased physical resilience (staying healthy) with typical off-season skill improvement = very impactful Sycamore player next season.

Related topic: Vorst returning makes me hope even more that JD will develop the lateral quickness to play the 4 spot b/c I'd love Vorst to average 20+ minutes, if healthy & after a productive off-season.

Agree with all, he will need an 'upper classman' haircut (or a headband). Looks soft to blow hair out of ones face following a massive 2 handed slam.
Like I told my son when he wanted a haircut, "back in my day, guys had long hair".
Anyway, very happy that Vorst is returning. He is my favorite player.

Something we may see come from this is talented assistants may stop leaving for mid-major jobs.

Bet Powell wishes he stuck at Gonzaga at this point.

Or we're going to start seeing head coaches at mid-majors bolting to take assistant roles more often.

The hard part for Valpo to swallow right now is that they didn’t even get much out of all the guys who left.

Yea we lost a ton after last year, but we got a memorable season out of it at least. Sell out crowds, regular season championship, national attention etc.

Valpo finished 11th? And then still lost everyone. You would hope if you are going to lose all of your starters it is because you had a wonderful season. Valpo lost a ton and never even got much joy out of the season to begin with.

Can understand how jaded they must feel about the whole thing right now.

Powell is a real easy guy to root for, feel bad for him. Seems like someone with a giant moral compass, this new climate is going to eat at him. Right man for the job, wrong time though

Powell is great. "Right man for the job, wrong time" is the perfect description.

Valpo is going to have to be realistic about whether they can compete in the MVC in the NIL era given they have no money and no facilities. I don't think it's possible for them - they're just trying to survive as a university. They should be on the phone with the Horizon League or Ohio Valley or they could go 50 years without an NCAA Tournament.

This is what I think will happen. And I think I've seen a couple instances already where this has happened the last week.

I'd even go farther. I think Valpo and Evansville, along with lots of other mid / low major schools need to consider if they should even be Division 1 at all. I might even be willing to throw ISU into that camp. How are we supposed to compete to when everyone else will rob the good players we have? We also basically play in a 1 bid league now, so barring a perfect 3 or 4 day run in St Louis, most teams in this conference aren't sniffing an NCAA Tournament any time soon. Then there's the House Settlement to pay former P5 players that played before the NIL era, and several schools are already considering dropping out of D1 so they don't have to be apart of that.
