If it ends up being the next program, then yes. Hopefully we could convince dudes to stay but if not then so be it. How many guys on our 25-26 roster have been here for 2 years? Which ones have actually gotten better? If we can prove that we can develop players it will make us more attractive to players who want to be developed. I'd love for us to point to a list of P4 teams to which we've sent players. Isn't that what schools do, develop students, sent them to the next level, then compile a list of the great companies that our students have gone to? What's the difference? There's always another level in life. We (ISU) are who we are and there's nothing wrong with that. Lets be the best us we can, and develop guys to get to the next level, whatever that might be. And maybe at some point our program rises to another level.

Some of you mentioned talent evaluation. That's silly. Most college coaches know what a good player looks like.

I don't agree that most coaches know a good player when they see one.

Last time I was in there, we still had the tacky as THFNB seats. Post reno, the building looks great inside and out. I think we've got the best facility in the Valley and probably one of the tops across MM hoop. All that is missing is a concourse reno that showcases the program history.

This brings to mind a Royce Waltman story. When he was in cancer treatment, he naturally cut back his direct involvement in recruiting, but as his health returned, he went into the field more often.
ISU was recruiting David Moss who was on the same HS team as a Purdue commit. The staff had Moss #4 or #5 on the board as a small forward target. Royce went to watch him play and called Rick Ray (I think) at halftime and said, move Moss to #1.
After the signing date, Gene Keady went to watch that team play and later told his staff, we recruited the wrong player!! Indiana State signed the best player on the team
 
What about the coach that took Hersey Hawkins because nobody else wanted a 6'4" center?

When you sign someone from the portal they may be a player that you have never seen play.

HCMG has played and coached his whole life. I don't think he has any problem with determining talent.
Recall the guard that went to Northwestern and Manyawu at Iowa. How much did last minute bad luck affect our team?
Sometimes the pieces just don't fall into place and you just have to move on.
Remember Shetlar? He was 3rd scorer for Drake and shot over 39% on 3's.

Reading this article it seems lowering the coaching salaries and putting that money into NIL would be the way to go for Mid majors.

Is it worth spending $600,000 a year and finishing 4-7 in the conference? I don’t envy the coaches in this landscape at all.

Agree. If we burn through all the money donated this year by Woodruff, Yorks, etc., do we get similar or better pledges for the following year? What a nightmare.

If he shot 70% free throws, would imagine he'd get meaningful offers, but I tend to agree w/u.

Can't overpay, hope he returns, gotta improve free throws to >65% minimum.

I think you're talking about Melvin Buckley (Purdue, South Florida) -- the BEST player on that HS team was Eddy Curry, 11-yr NBA veteran, 1st rd NBA draft pick, #4 overall - straight out of HS... NBA title with the Mavs in 2012, led the NBA in FG %, earned ~$71M in the NBA

Buckley spent some time in Europe, though not the career that Moss had in Europe
 
@Jason Svoboda would it be better to make one thread that has the current players entering the portal now that they are announcing? They are spread over their Player post, the eligibility thread, and another. I didn't see the Walker announcement till you just mentioned it. Wanted to ask instead of just adding it incase you have it set this way for a purpose.

We have 8 eligible returnees counting Bean -- JVB, ESB, Vorst, Bruno, Harding, Sivery, Martin and Bean.

We currently have 4 open scholarships to hit 15 ceiling, 3 if you keep Bean as a walk-on.

Not sure the total schollie number he was operating off of between 13-15, but he may have actually undersold the 8 number by 1.

I wasn't counting Martin or Bean. There are 6 returning schollies that played last year.

I think it's strange that none of the additional (4)? have announced. Are they holding off until they are replaced by an upgrade?
