Dude's a stud... Heck of a teammate also, hasn't taken an ounce of credit for his performances, got to love that about him. I was sold on him last year backing up Gates, he's the real deal.

Quite possibly will go down as the greatest running back in ISU history. And he's got some damn fine company in that club...

IndyTree, he's well on his way. He's not there yet, but getting closer....

with every performance. Jim Brumfield (drafted by the Saints, played for the Steelers), Vincent Allen (four 1,000 yard rushing seasons), David Wright (school's all-time leading rusher), Derrick Franklin (former single-game rushing leader) are the best right now.

Who does Shakir remind me of? Now that he is showing power up the middle, as evidenced by his long TD run up the gut at Western Kentucky, I would have to say Vincent Allen. Both were smaller backs overlooked by the major schools but both had that combination of speed, quickness, power and moves. Vincent had more bulk but was only about 5-8.

David Wright was just Mr. Consistency. Nothing overly flashy. Just give him the ball and get out of his way.

Brumfield was and is the protoype NFL running back. Good size and power. He didn't put up the huge stats of a Vincent Allen or David Wright due to the offensive system in use, but he was outstanding.

Right behind Brumfield, Allen, Wright and Franklin is a guy a lot of people have forgotten about. Rip Warren. He was on the team the same time as Vincent Allen and got overshadowed. ISU ran the wishbone attack in order to get both Allen and Warren into the game at the same time.

Well it would appear that he conveniently didn't play against TCU for 3-1 Portland State. He's got two games of 200 plus and 1 game (which was a blow out) of 70 yards. Bell has more total yards and averages more yards per carry.

Looks like Shakir is leading the nation in rushing yards by more than 70 yards. Rushing leader goes by yards typically over yards per game. Hopefully he can keep this up!

TJames...do you know if ISU has a PR guy working with our kids on how to handle media...I'm guessing we do? Shakir will no doubt get more and more local and national media coverage for his performance and I hope he's getting some coaching on how to handle those questions...specifically, the first thing I hope he does is recognize his offensive line EVERYTIME he is interviewed...that goes a long way for those unsung guys up front.

It's funny you ask that because in every interview he goes on and on about everyone else without mentioning himself. Don't think you have anything to worry about. If anything, he needs to at least take a little bit of the credit, but I like it. There is something awesome and scary about a guy who is so calm and smooth that he doesn't care about the attention, or at least comes off that way. You can't rattle him, he's just going to go about his business and dominate!

What type of #'s did MILT ALLEN end with during that early 70's era?

Milt Allen

I would have to go back and check his numbers. I didn't personally see Milt play. So my list was jsut of guys that I personally saw. I was only 11 or 12 when Brumfield played, but I have watched old game film of him and talked to the people who played with him. And the fact that Brumfield was drafted into the NFL by the Saints and later played with the Steelers (he was one of Franco Harris' first running mates before Rocky Blier and was a former roommate in Pittsburgh with Tony Dungy).

Another name that could be somehwere on a Top 10 or Top 15 list of all-time running backs at Indiana State is Ken Monroe, who was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals. His son played at ISU here recently.

Other names are O.B. Barnett; Mel Burks; Kevin Weatherby; Darrold Clardy; Kevin Henderson; Tori Vactor; and Darrius Gates.
