not only do we want to do want to win which we should be able to do if most guys are available, we need to make sure guys are healthy for Ball State & Tennessee State

I'll say it once again, the Swope injury is 1000% all on Schertz!!!!!!! Issiah had no reason to be in that game with us being up 20 with 2 minutes left and UNI's best player in the lockerroom hurt. I don't question much with HCJS but what was he thinking with our starting five in the last 2 minutes????

I’m not 100% sure about this anymore…

Jason posted the other day how the NET ranking is arrived at and margin of victory being capped at 10 would be a really really good reason to keep your starters in longer than usual.

If it’s a 3 possession game - from being inside of 10 points then I’m riding with my starters as well. As long as you’re positioned in the at-large conversation this is exactly the way he should be coaching.

Early on I was really really confused at why he was playing his starters sooo many minutes - especially the second half vs Toledo where he played them all 20 minutes. In that instance I think it’s what he thought he needed to do to win the game. Vs Northern IL I’d be shocked and a few of these other games I’d be flat out shocked if he doesn’t know the NET’s formula and have it in mind. Honestly, he’s be dumb not to take it into consideration.

It’s the only reasonable explanation and it makes perfect sense. The NET has some flaws, the NCAA is leaning heavily on it so it’s a coaches job to try to exploit or take advantage of it.

All that said his lack of bench usage / trust /depth in general has been a bit perplexing as a whole. I’m surprised especially during some of these non conference games he hasn’t made an effort to use them more and see what we’ve got.

just saw we're 23 point favorites tomorrow, without Swope do we still cover that?

Personally, I think the the lack of using the bench is almost a college basketball issue created by the transfer portal. Look around, A LOT of teams are riding their starters high minutes, especially in the MVC. Here me out. Players have a WAY better understanding on where they stand with a team before the season starts than they did 3-4 years ago. Hell, us as fans have a pretty good idea where our teams stands before we ever tip of the ball (we new Voss, Swope, Conwell, etc. were all going to be starters before they ever got to campus). With that being said, I think coaches/players are constructing rosters where they have 7,8, maybe 9 guys that are going to be their guys. And then hopefully guys 10-13 hopefully develop for next year (these are your highest risk for transferring out). Once your guys graduate and you have your transfer outs, you go head hunting again to fill out your next 7,8, maybe 9 guys that are going to be your guys again. And then you do it all again next year.

So if you are a player in the portal and not going to get NIL money, you are looking for playing time. You find a place where PT is available and you knock someone down the rung. The next year that kid transfers where he is going to get PT and they knock someone down the rung. It just seems like its a cycle because it's more transparent where the needs are needed.

Hopefully it makes sense, makes sense in my head at least

UNI's best player
For a second there I was like "when did we play Northern Iowa?". It's always hilarious when people call Northern Iowa "NIU". Their fans get so butthurt over it too. Even heard a ref at a football game one year call them Northern Illinois on the hot mike 😂.

Just wait until people start mixing up SIU and USI. Then there's the EU Aces.

We should.

USI lost a bunch of quality since last year. In addition to Swope, they lost both of their bigs including that Polakovich kid that was just an energy nightmare. I felt like he was huge as he seemed to be in every rebound or loose ball against us last year and the other big probably had just as many.

Looking back on it, they had a TON of talent last year, can't believe they didn't get to 20+ games with it all.

I know not being eligible for the post season is going to hurt that program for the next few years, and with Evansville showing signs of life that fills a void in the pocket city; they will support a winner if it's there. I think that first year in d1 might be a high water mark for the screaming' eagles for a while

Yep, they had a very short window. Didn't help that several of those guys were seniors so was just unfortunate timing. Sometimes timing is everything.

What you are trying to get at makes complete sense but that ain’t it - just to be direct.

If a guy transfers in and he gets 25-30 mins a game he’s alright with that in general. Most guys are going to be okay with that unless you’re just elite elite.

Now maybe JS is telling some of these freshman as they commit in, “look I’d love to have you, I’ve love to help develop you, I think you’d be a great fit but you’ve got to earn your minutes - I’m going to get some dogs in the portal and nothing is going to be guaranteed” Like maybe that happens to a Shetler or something I don’t know.

But the idea that the portal is driving coaches to play studs longer is not the answer for me… If anything it’s a reason to play them less. You want to pad Swope, Avila, Conwell, Larry stats by playing them more in a 20+ point game? Hell naaa.

Anymore, I don’t watch a lot of college basketball outside of Indiana State - hell the TV isn’t even on as I type this. But I can tell you this much just having watched JS for a few years and watched a lot of ball. JS is coaching like a guy who see’s a window of opportunity here and he’s pushing the limits - he’s going all-in right now. I think he thinks he’s got the horses to get to the NCAA tournament right now and I think he also knows that freaking window could close in a heartbeat this off-season if one or two of these guys have success and they hit the portal.

If you want to compare it to anything compare it to an MLB Manager pitching his Ace well above 90 pitches in say June, July and August because he’s individually in the running for the Cy Young but as a team they don’t have bullpen depth and they just need him to go 7 or 8 innings. That’s great but it might ruin his career…

Beyond my NET explanation earlier that is what is going on here. If you think it’s about a coach that’s pandering to a players need for playing time you’re all wet. It’s about a coach who sees his window to take a team deep and for him to potentially get paid here or somewhere else that’s what it’s about. Don’t get it twisted.

Maybe.

But in the case of Schertz, he’s not doing anything differently from what he did at LMU.
