Finally closed on a 2nd house (some of you may be familiar with the first story) and anyhow, I need to purchase a water softener. Do any of you have any suggestions on those? I keep getting referred to Culligan and Kinetco. Anyone have experience with either?

I've had a Kinetico for 8 yrs. now and have had no problems. Kinetico uses no electricity as it regenerates by hydro power.

aqua systems on Allisonville is where i got my Svo... pricey but really good equipment. Don't buy your salt from them though... the bonus is that they'll come remove it when you're ready to move again and install at your next place.

Never was into "soft water," where I'd take a shower and still feel slimy. Maybe when I hit 100 yrs. I'll change my mind.:talktohand:

Well, it's not really an option unless I want my front load washer/dryer to die within 3 or so years... not to mention my dishwasher and what not. We've been in the house about a week now and we're already seeing hard water rings.

A water softner will definitely extend the life of the appliances you mentioned as well as your water heater. Another benefit is that you will use much less soap for clothes washing and bathing.
As Weave said, soft water does leave you feeling as though you haven't rinsed off completely, so it does take some getting use to.

Less water use? Whenever I've showered using soft water, it takes three times as long to rinse off.

I bought my new home in rural S. Indiana last January and have seen no evidence of "rings." Sounds to me like a municipal water treatment issue.

Been in the house for a little over two weeks now and I'm loving it. I'm definitely glad I moved where I did and I like my community thus far. The first house problems and falling through turned out to be a blessing.

I highly recommend Kinetico for a few reasons.

I used to be a water quality specialist and serviced all softeners including kinetico.

1. Kinetico is non-electric "Saves Money"
2. Twin tank design "24/7 soft water" "does the exact same as other twin tanks i.e. culligans"
3. Metering "saves salt and water" "does the exact same as other metering units i.e culligans"
4. Extremely durable and no electricity means no breakage. "Better than all others"
5. Kinetico will last you 20-30 years depending on your water "Better than all others"
6. When a kinetico breaks it is usually because of a seal going bad or a part wearing down and these are extremely cheap to replace "except for a service call which all charge for"
7. Kineticos patented rinse system. when regenerating it uses soft water from the other tank GREATLY increasing the life of the unit.
8. No electronic or metal to rust or fry. except for the screws on top and the tank link.

Don't be fooled by warranties, all softener lifetime warranties are for the tanks only which will never break anyways unless you hit them which voids the warranty.

Kinetico $3000 lasts 20 years
Kenmore $800 lasts 5 if your lucky

after 20 years
Kinetico $3000
Kenmore $4000

Also as a side note I was born on april 10 1979 and in 2003 got a service call to a house for a kinetico. The kinetico was never serviced before and was installed in 1978 so it was older than I was. I replaced what was broken $250 including the service call, told them while I was there They should replace the level 2/3 which is a old bad design and will go out eventually for $54 and if replaced now it would save them $85 for another service call they said replace it. Charged them $304 and told them the unit is perfect again and the resin in the tanks should be replaced in the next 2 years approx $300 and then the unit will last for another 20-30 years.

Also a reconditioned unit from a authorized kinetico dealer is the same and will last as long as a new kinetico as long as the dealer has the new level 2/3 in it and NEW resin. and if anyone tries to tell you they can dispose of your kinetico for free laugh at them because they will recondition it themselves for $500 and sell it for $2000 to $2500.
