ugh, TD SEMO

well, that's a tough loss for ISU. WOW

24-21 SEMO, don't see ISU making a comeback. ISU wasted 2 timeouts already.

so close, yet so far.

Illinois State next week. They'll have to try again.

for those at the game, give us your impression.

game over, ISU loses again 27-24, just not in the cards for ISU to win this one.

losing streak hits 18 in a row.

and the schedule really gets difficult now.

That's disappointing. At least we competed really well. I just wish we weren't in a conference where everyone is so much better than we are. I do have to wonder if Dowdell gives us the best chance to win. Yes, he rushed for a lot of yards and threw a TD, but our offense just doesn't seem to be diverse enough. Let's hope this is a sign of good things to come though. D played well until the end.

I'm no coach, but I just think Schmidtke would have pulled this win out for ISU, too many mental and physical mistakes by Dowdell. As long as he continues to start I don't think ISU will win.

Even the radio announcers were talking about how poorly he carried the ball when running, it's a wonder he didn't fumble more than he did.

ISU needs Calvin in there to give them a good pass threat. Who knows, we'll see what happens against the other ISU next week. ISU won't have any more chances like this the rest of the season sadly.

Dowdell is NOT the quarterback of the future. Very poor decision maker. Not a good passer. Make him a running back, a wide receiver or a defensive back. Wasting valuable QB experience time with him at the throttle. AND couldn't hang on to the ball if it had handles ! How many times to you let a QB fumble away opportunities?

looking back, that 85 yard kickoff return by SEMO that led to their 1st score just killed ISU, the entire 1st half the ISU defense played very well, limiting any SEMO progress. Had SEMO not scored in the 1st half ISU could have won this game.

It seemed the ISU defense wore down late in the game and SEMO had just enough to get that last TD. Sad way to end the game for ISU.

Blue, I agree, as long as Dowdell is the QB ISU will struggle on offense. Very one dimensional.

gonna be real interesting to see who starts against ISU red next week. They're a bottom dwellar in the conf., but are a heck of alot better than SEMO was today.

I didn't see the game, but it sure sounded a heck of a lot better than anything in the past three or four years! At least our guys made some things work, and can now see that what the coaches are telling them will, in fact, work.

Dr. Lou said a couple of weeks ago on ESPN, that when rebuilding a program that is really down (I had to do a double-take to see if they were talking about ISU...), you have four distinct phases you must complete, one at a time, in order. They were:

1. Teach the team how to compete. They've got to be able to bring it for 60 minutes.
2. Teach them how to win. Once you're competing each week, it's another step up to getting over the hump.
3. Teach them to expect to win. That's a huge mental hurdle, but it must be done to be truly successful.
4. Teach them how to take it up a level, from winning to winning championships.

Of course, he was talking about his son, Skip, at East Carolina, but he could have been talking about ISU. We're firmly in phase one, and if each week the kids are learning how to compete for an entire game, then we're on the right track. We'll see how we stand on that next week.

And the nice thing is that there's nothing that says you can't go from step one to step two in the same season. Boy, that would be nice. Can you image if we actually expected to win each game? Wow, that would be fun!!!

If we beat Northern Iowa or a Dakota team I think the upset might take the place of Appalachian State over Michigan as the greatest of all time :P

I just hope the team doesn't let a close loss like this wear them down. It has to be deflating to them to come that close and lose.

Two things that bode well for the future: 1. We are much more capable of running the ball successfully and stopping the run than anytime in the last few years. The turnovers and special teams problems can be corrected in time. 2. Yesterday's game had a respectable and enthusiastic crowd and it showed that there will be supportive fans there, especially when we get more competitive, which I think we will be (again, in time). It felt like a real college football game at many points yesterday and that was for a program that has lost 37 out of 38 or whatever it is.

We'll have to get a lot better soon to beat anyone else on our schedule. Missouri St. is probably the weakest team left and thumped SEMO worse than the score indicated. But there is dramatic progress in the right direction and it was almost exactly a year ago that a lack of positive progress was noted and the coaching change was made. We are in much better shape than a year ago, with a long way still to go.

I witnessed the game and this sums it up for me as well. ISU looked like they were going to blow them out in the early going. BAD special teams coverage and a loss of momentum on offense in the second half was killer.

I was disappointed with Dowdell on some passes that were easy first downs and he missed the mark horribly. Other times he looked great but consistency was not there on his part. The D looked great for most of the game.

I look at the number of Frosh that we were starting for SEMO ST. (only one I think) and how many ISU had (MANY!)... And I have high hopes for the next few years.

I saw a pretty good team out there on Saturday. I hope they can get that first win soon.

5283 for attendance, anyone there verify this? ...

Absolutely. I think there were at leat this number of fans. At times during the game the fans were rocking and having a good time. We sat near the band and they realy helped to keep the fans into it.
