Looking at a singular behavior such as just wearing masks is beetle headed. Preventing a virus requires a defense in depth approach. All homes have front door locks, so why do people get security systems, move to gated communities, get guard dogs, buy home defense weapons, etc. Because each time you add a layer to your defensive approach, it increases the probability that your overall approach will be successful.

Masks are only effective if the individuals wearing them are wearing them correctly as well as maintain proper social distance, implement a rigorous hand washing protocol, limit touching their faces, limit touching foreign surfaces, refrain from extraneous public appearances where large crowds gather, minimize intimate social gatherings in their homes, etc.

If Americans weren't so damn selfish, self absorbed, and really cared about "thy neighbor" like they love to claim, we could remain open like Asian countries have done and not seen the drastic spikes.

yes, Ive heard that a lot of times. I wear masks when appropriate. I do think there would be just a little bit of data that shows some sort of mask wearing is having a quantifiable affect on the spread. Im not sure which asian countries you are referring to.

some of your language sounds like double-speak from a politician; the "preferred response of some" will lead to more deaths, then skewing into "no data presented that masks work" I think most of the LEGIT doctors (sorry Rand Paul, sorry Scott Atlas) and scientists will disagree with your position that "masks don't work" they do work, they will work IF used properly, along with the measures that 'Boda outlined.

Have "lock-ins" led to death? The only ones I've read/followed are a number of nursing home/retirement home deaths where the individual "wasted away" from lack of contact (as in they lost the personal connections to the 'outside world') by some accounts, people died within weeks vice months later

Wear your mask, Don't wear your mask just don't sneeze or cough on people. If/When you wear your mask, don't have cradling your chin

Agree w/ 'Boda's assessment of selfish citizens; i'll never understand why people don't seem to understand that their actions/inactions affect others.

Are the doctors at the WHO not legit? what do they say?

regarding this part, i shouldnt have been so political for you. lockdowns WILL cause death to happen that wouldn't otherwise. undiagnosed conditions such as cancers and heart issues, suicides, drug overdoses. with sports/activities being cancelled, there will be young people who will die from drugs, suicide and violence who were on the margins of trouble to begin with. Even Fauci himself said his only concern was the virus and didnt take any consideration to the costs his measures would cause and Italy followed everything he said to do and of course now we are seeing that fail too

Does anyone know if they are back to practice as of yet? I'm really tired of this BS and I just hope we can make int the season!

Just a personal note on the virus. My wife is a nurse and wears her mask and other ppe at work religiously. We both wear them when out in public as asked to do. We have a small circle of friends we socialize with. She tested positive and we are in quarantine. We have no idea where it came from. I'm of the opinion that the doctors are really just guessing what works. Countries that locked down totally are now seeing a resurgence, like the US. I think we just have to live with it as best as possible. We can not afford another long shutdown. IMO we may soon have a shutdown but not by the government, we will have a shutdown because there won't be enough people to work. Maybe the administration could have done things differently, but the fact we will soon have 2 vaccines is pretty impressive. Back to the team. Per twitter they are practicing again. I really want to see this team play, but I think it's 50/50 we actually play a decent part of the season.

Well, to me it's common sense that masks make a difference. Have you noticed that healthcare professionals wear masks? Masks have been used in surgeries for a long time. It's stupid to say they don't work.

I think those masks are to prevent bacteria from falling into an open wound. Until now I have never had a healthcare worker use a mask for anything other than a surgery

No family with cancer? My grandmother died from leukemia. I still remember visiting at Union where not only did she have to wear her mask when in the presence of anyone, but we did as well when in her room as did any staff that entered. This was in 1991.

My wife's dad died from cancer a couple years back at Union during a flu season. He was advised to wear a mask in the hospital during visits, when going into crowded public spaces, and especially after his chemo treatments.

I thought they might work at first but I have serious doubts now. It's apparently an airborne virus that you can actually catch from up to 20 feet away from someone else that has it. If you are in a gas station, a car, the grocery store, or anywhere else you are still breathing the same air as everyone else. Apparently in a restaurant you can only catch the virus while walking to and from your table and not while you are eating. I also see almost everyone wearing a mask everywhere I go and cases are still going up.

The problem could also be that people are wearing the same old contaminated mask they've worn 50 times. Doctors wear a mask one time and then it goes into the trash. They throw them away for a reason.

For me it isn't worth the money to buy the medical masks, I don't have a way to wash a cloth one (truck driver), and I find it completely gross to wear the same mask over and over again so I just don't wear it 90% of the time.

No cancer. Last year when my dad died and was in ICU for around a couple weeks and we were in and out of that floor and the entire hospital, I dont recall seeing one mask.

Ever have Dr. Clouse for a history class? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Clouse_(professor)

if you did, you (hopefully) would have noticed his constant wear of a mask in the late 1980s - following his heart transplant; i can't remember if he did it because he chose to OR because his doctor directed it.

The late Dr. Clouse passed away in 2016

I didnt have him. Sounds like he assessed his situation and managed the risk to his health. Maybe that's what we should do. If you are uncomfortable with any situation use mitigation strategies go as extreme as you like.

agreed -- i hope you're willing to carry the ($) liability for how your actions/in-actions affect others.

and if folks have ever visited loved ones in ICUs, some hospitals are strict on enforcing mask/gown wear (depends on the patient), hand washing, etc, they'll have experienced mask wear

mask wear is still used by some TB patients to decrease their "contamination zone"
