The Blue Level
No chance. Their coach and coach Mac do not get along because of the Cole episode. As long as coach is here we will not get one player from Bloom. South. The kid is a shooter but no chance we get him.

Holmes didn't like Coach cutting a "shooting" guard that shot about 30%? He is a Soph. We might need a guard by then.

Anyone that totally relies on his high school coach to select his school probably isn't mature enough to attend college anyway. Now an AAU coach might help to point a player in a certain direction but a high school coach is a bit farther down the pecking order nowdays.

Not even worth the effort...

I think it has already been said and you can’t emphasize it enough. Indiana State will not get another kid out of Bloomington in the foreseeable future. Cutting Cole was a black eye for the program. Especially after coach brought in Tyler Cutter, a similar player with similar high school stats and success. It was a mistake! I just hope coach realizes what a bad first impression that move was. Cole was a good kid and played hard.

Sorry - If you don't like my opinion on this matter but it was a raw deal and it was a mistake. Because of it we will not get a kid out of Bloomington for years to come.

Morgan, you have been "spot on" on some other issues with the basketball program but I strongly disagree with you about the D1 ability of Cole Holmstrom. May have been a "good kid" but for his size could not "shoot for s**t" or defend even average sized guards. I will rephrase that............he could shoot just couldn't hit with regularity. Being a "good kid" isn't enough to retain an athletic scholarship when you are out of your league. Also think you overstate the issue in Bloomington!

Where does Holmstrom play now? If nowhere, did he refuse any offers?

I will quote myself here. Again I think their are several people who disagree with me on the ability of Cole and this entire issue. Fact of the matter is here we are 2 years later and their are some people who still feel the way I do about the situation so obviously it is an issue. Can you disagree with that?

I am not saying Cole was the best player or even that he was a good player. I am saying that he was a pretty darn good high school player! I am also saying people on this board are very quick to jump on my case when I hold freshman accountable. Because after all they are to young to be held accountable. Not my opinion, but the opinion of others expressed on this board.

Cole came in as a freshman under Waltman and did a decent job in my opinion. He was brought in as someone who was supposed to be a scorer. Not sure if that was a good role for him. But when you sign Tyler Cutter and bring in Jordan Printy and cut Cole Holmstrom then I have a problem with the decision making process. I do believe Cole could have gone to Indianapolis and played, he has been in contact with a former assistant (can't think of his name of the top of my head) who is coaching at Indianapolis or IUPUI one or the other.

It aint like we had some stellar team that was on the cusp of making a huge dent in the Valley. I don't like to see good kids get cut that's all. I was one of the biggest Rico Stinson fans you will find, but I tell you this much I would rather have 100 Cole Holmstroms on my team that 1 Pot Smoking Rico Stinson any day of the week! And don't you think for even a min. that Rico Stinson is the only one on that team out smoking the pot... "Ya Smoke Crack Son"?

I think if you understood the entire situation and the angle I am taking on this then you would appricate my perspective.

Look given the right situation I am sure Cole could have had a good career at Indiana State. I am not sure if he "turned down" any other offers. I think the kid truly likes Indiana State and has a lot of friends here. Maybe after this happened he just wanted to finish out school where he started and just get a degree. I won't pretend to know why he made the decision to stay here. I do know that he had some other options. Whether or not he had scholarship offers, I can't say?

I might be over reacting to the whole "Bloomington" issue in your opinion. But in my opinion I am not! lol Come talk to me if they get a player out of that city in the next 10 years or while Coach Mac is still here? I am trying to ruffle anyone’s feathers here I am just saying it was a raw deal. You don't cut local kids and bring in sub par talent from out of state! It's a NO NO!

Man I knew I was gonna catch grief for these posts. Here we go... I am not doing this with ya all. You guys have your opinions on this subject and I have mine. Their is no way you will be able to change my mind and like wise.

Fact of the matter is their is some pretty good hoops tallent that comes out of B-Town and as a coach you would not want to do anything that might eliminate your university from possbily getting a player from that tallent pool. Makes sense?

I mean how would Kante look on this team right now? Case and Point. Thank you Bluestreak!

I wasn't intending to either refute or support your post - just couldn't remember any recruits we ever got out of B-Town.

Indeed... I was just trying to imagine how good next years team would look with a player like Kante.

I just figured I would get a lot of grief for my post on this topic. So I immediately go on the defensive. I can't name any other players we have landed

Someone may disagree with cutting Cole on ethical grounds, but there is NO WAY IN HECK one can disagree with cutting him on the basis of talent. That would be a stupid statement! (or extremely biased)

I'm late to this party, but wasn't the issue with Cole was how late he was told about the issue? I tried to stay out of this as much as possible, but I think that is what I was told several times by a couple important folks.

As most folks know, or I hope they know, scholarships are good for ONE year but are renewable each year. When you recruit a player, I think you need to take this into consideration because many other programs will let go of kids if they are not performing up to desired level.

The issue is deeper that just talent alone. The way coach Mac handle this issue with cole was low and unethical. Coaches should never treat a player that way...furthermore, a in state player about an hour away. Its just makes the program look bad.
Agree with the way the situation was handled making thing program look bad. It is never good to burn bridges with kids and programs so close to the school.

I would really love to hear the full story, not just second hand accounts on the situation. I've read posts here, talked to other alumni, but I'd like a horse's mouth account from Cole himself. Would definitely be interesting.

Yes we cant afford to miss kids from bloomington because they always seem to have good teams. Its not like this is Duke...we need to keep are options open

I don't think anyone looks at State as being Duke, just a terrible comparison. That said, I don't think the way the situation with Cole was handled was that bad. Sure you're going to have some hurt feelings, but at the end of the day, McKenna is here to win ball games, not hold hands and pass out lollypops.

Damn Newbie. New to the board and all you've done is trash the coach and the school. Whats your agenda dude?

Tell me now it is unusual for a team, any team, to "adjust" annually ????????????????
Tom Crean must be a real prick as he is shipping out more than a couple after his maiden season? Some of them aren't on this list yet!

Whoever thinks that it is not routine for D1 schools in almost every sport to ask kids that don't fit the program to leave each and every year has no idea. Scholarships are so limited and are so valuable that coaches can't afford to keep the wrong kids because it's the right thing to do. Take your favorite coach, and I'm sure they have done this many times. Just yesterday I heard the same complaint about Joe Pa "screwing" a local kid the went to Penn State. In reality, if the athlete actually has an interest in actually playing intercollegiate athletics (instead of just taking the free education), the coaches are really doing the athlete a favor by being honest with them and releasing them to go somewhere where they may be able to play.

Yes state will never be duke because of the way Mckenna handle things. Furthermore, if was was told in advance it would have been a little more correct. Second, if you dont think it was that bad then you must be related or family to Mckenna. He is hear to win games but I dont see how releasing players it going to help this..Has Mckenna been able to keep a point guard yet???.. hum no....We cant afford to treat players such as Lee and Cutter players he recruited, let go. In my opinion he needs to hand out lollypops to get kids to stay and want to come to state. Once again this is not duke.

Are you Cole bro? If not, you've got to be someone from his family but I believe his mom was already registered on here. You're just giving off the vibe of being involved.
