Honestly a trophy with say like a map of 41 from Terre Haute to Evansville with artistic mentions of various notable landmarks and towns along the way on it would be pretty cool. Put the ISU and USI logos on it next to Terre Haute and Evansville, and stick a US 41 shield on it somewhere. Probably limit the towns labeled to TH, Sullivan, Vincennes, Princeton, and Evansville to avoid crowding. Landmarks that come to top of mind would be Fort Vincennes; corn and watermelon fields; two active dirt tracks and an abandoned one; and the Wabash, White, and Ohio Rivers. You can also see the Merom and Mt Carmel power plants in the distance on the way down. Basically take the map below and make it really nice and slap it on a nice little trophy.

To Quote Gunny Hartman...

What The Fuck Is That?

Your last post on this board about basketball was in March and you predicted a first-round exit in the NIT.
I own that L, but I cannot understand why this school is so poverty stricken in football and basketball. With Hannahs leaving for USF, baseball is next for the school to dwell in the basement.

Who does Mallory have pictures of? He gets to be paid a ton for 2-4 wins and he gets to fire coordinators while keeping his job every year?

When we were on our great run during the NIT, why didn’t you post on this board with any positive comments about how well we were doing?

One of our fans is on the USI board excited about their win and also telling them our fan base is fearful they’ll pass us as a program (even though majority of posters in this thread are fine with playing USI).

1) "A lot" doesn't mean "entire" or "most".
2) Congratulating an opponent like a mature adult doesn't mean you're "excited" about losing to them. Grow up.

In case y'all want to know what I wrote. Don't like it? Too bad!
Interesting read. What it really boils down to is that a lot of our fans are fearful that playing USI (and losing) will eventually elevate your program past ours. I think they also view a travel trophy as helping elevate USI more. I think their fears are a bit unfounded, especially in modern times with the transfer portal and NIL. I simply see mid majors becoming more and more equal across the board. The exceptions will be the ones with multi-millionaire and billionaire donors, who can buy/keep coaches and players. ISU doesn't have that, so now, any success we have will always be short-lived. Under today's rules Ja Morant isn't playing his sophomore season at Murray State, because he's getting bought. 5-7 years ago, our starting 5 from last year returns with Matt Graves (Josh Schertz still goes to StL) as the coach.

Anyways, congrats on the win. I made it down last time, but I couldn't make it this time around.

You wrote this? Interesting… Yeah, I don’t really like it but that’s okay because it’s pretty easy to discredit.

So you’ve got what one or two people have expressed that they don’t want to play USI - everyone else not only okay with it, think it’s a good idea for them to be on the schedule every year.

I can’t speak for those couple people who don’t want to play USI but for everyone else here let me break this down for you on a very basic level! Since most people here think we should be playing USI or at minimum don’t have any negative opinion about playing them then it’s impossible to be fearful of them in the first place let alone fearful they would surpass us. Got it? Impossible to think we should play them or have no issue with playing them while also being fearful of them surpassing us. No one is concerned by that or should be concerned by that. Doesn’t mean it’s not a thing or can’t ever happen - different conservation.

Second, no one has given any thought of a trophy helping to elevate them past us. The assertion that our fans really think that is beyond ridiculous. Again, first you’d have to believe that we shouldn’t be playing them to be able to have any opinions about the value of the trophy. About the only person around here that has any interest in playing for a trophy would be you who was literally brainstorming ideas to yourself on what a trophy could look like…

I know it doesn’t really fit your narrative - I think some of the initial response to playing USI was in that first season they were D1 eligible and going on the road to boot. I think in general that was a bit head scratching because we had nothing really to gain by doing it… You have to realize a lot has happened in college basketball since then - a lot! I’ve said this and will say it again, any notion that an at large bid is actually attainable right now for a school like Indiana State has been completely debunked by last season. So between that, NIL, P6 world domination, the portal, selection committee and metric bias - suddenly playing _______ school (doesn’t matter who) seems pretty insignificant. In fact, playing regional non MVC schools like USI, Ball State, Eastern IL, Western KY, IPFW, IUPUI etc. makes a lot of sense every year or every other year.

Last thing as this post is long enough so I’m not going to get into the reasons why - 5-7 years ago Josh Schertz does not still go to STL while his starting 5 returns. That is also incorrect in so many ways… But we can revisit that another day.

Look, it you’ve proved anything over the years you are a free thinker and you’re not going to let anyone stop you from expressing those thoughts and that’s fine - these fan forums are good places for that.

Hell if the NCAA didn't do that that 2-time transfer bullshit in December of last year, there is an extremely high probability we run it back with the starting 5

Swope & Conwell wouldn't be able to transfer without sitting out.
Avila is glued to the hip of Schertz or via versa
I'm willing to bet the farm Larry is loyal and would have stayed if the cast of characters stayed around.
Kent would be the only one that might have transfered but it would be damn hard to leave a pre-season top 25 team where you are guaranteed starter and will be the media darling the whole season.

If you truly believe Schertz is walking away to go to STL and his starting 5 is returning, there is no helping you

Not to rehash this too much, but what happened to our Sycamores after last season is precisely what the P5/4/ whatever the hell they are now, want. They want everything to be against the mid majors developing into a power or even building a stronger team year over year. At this point we are way passed the amatuer world of college athletics and it is no longer recognizable to what is was in its glory days. Short of one of us hitting the 500 million dollar lottery and setting our athletic department up for financial freedom to compete in today's world, I guess we will have to know we stand zero chance to rebuild what we had last season. How sad it is.
