Register NOW to join our community of die-hard Sycamore fans.

I don't care about cross country, who really goes to watch people run around, and there is nothing to do in TH for kids under 21 like me.

So what you're saying is, Terre Haute is just like every other town in America. Nice observation.

Nope.............

Go to a supportive sports town...........

If the Cubs suck (wait a minute, they always suck) they still sell out every game. If the Cardinals are a mediocre team, they sell out most games. If the Packers aren't any good, you still have to get on a waiting list to get tickets.

If IU basketball is bad (like they are), they still fill their gym. Their fans show up no matter what and focus on the positives rather than the negatives. Truly supportive sports towns will support their team whether they are winning or losing. We (Terre Haute) aren't like that.......

The whole state of Kentucky bleeds blue whether they win 25 games or 12 games. They went to the NIT a few years ago and had to play at an alternative gym due to a scheduling issue. It was impossible to get tickets to that game.

I used to live in Lincoln, Nebraska when Tom Osborne was coaching football there. They were good at the time and it was nearly impossible to get tickets. They aren't even at the top of the Big 12 anymore and you still can't get tickets to their games.

110,000 people showed up every game to watch Michigan's football go 3-9

If you have never been to a supportive sports city/town, I suggest you go..... It's a wonderful thing to experience.

All perspective...

WHAT do you want?

Someone rattled off many things that T-H has to offer (and all ages), so what do you want?

I've no desire to live in T-H again but that's because I have no desire to live in town; after decades of city life; I'm interested in living in the coutry; think Green Acres except I'm not as gullible as Eddie Albert and the wife is FAR more beautiful than Eva Gabor.

Every one of those teams has a deep tradition in their city that people identify with. ISU has always run from its past, rather than embracing it. If we had always played up the Wooden years with the Clarence Walker ordeal, and the Kleuh years with great teams that averaged 200 points a game, and of course the Bird years, we might have a more loyal fanbase. As it is, very few people know of anything other than Bird, they don't realize that there's a lot to be proud of with ISU basketball. That's why I've always said that I'd have Wooden, Kleuh, Bird, the '68 National Runners-up, the '79 team, et al plastered all over campus and Terre Haute. It's a tradition to be proud of, and it should be sung from the mountaintop! Give people something to identify with, and they'll be more forgiving during the lean years. As much as I hate them, Wichita State fans are "foaming at the mouth" loyal because of teams that were good 25 to 50 years ago. But even their current students can tell you all about those years. We could use some of that...

When was the last time Terre Haute had a big concert here? What great college athletics are there in town besides RHIT?

Please tell me?
Define great.

That said, the reason Terre Haute doesn't get concerts is because they won't sell the tickets required to make it a feasible event. The only concerts that seem to do well in Terre Haute are country music concerts.

We had MTV on campus my senior year and that was to be culminated with a concert by Everclear and Garbage at Hulman Center. They sold like 100 tickets and this was when both of those groups had Top 40 songs out and on the charts.

Additionally, check out THIS post on what I think the Sycamore marketing folks should be doing to get students into the seats.

Life is incentive based. It is what it is.

Damn right ITF...it's about time SOMEONE else recognizes the need to TEACH this history to present, past & future FANS. What better venue than the OUTER CONCOURSE of Hulman Center? :sycamores:

The sporadic success of ISU's MAJOR sports over the past 40 yrs. has chiseled away at
our heritage and self-esteem and it's 'friggin time to REBUILD.

Remember -- Promotion !

Guys -- this was intended to provoke comments and ideas that would get ISU to do some positive things to help build some real and lasting energy for the season and beyond. My whole point was (is) that simply winning will not be enough to put thousands of fans in HC on a regular basis -- we been down that road a couple of times before.

Seems like over half the comments here have little to do with the above.

So assumming some ISU people read this site -- get to it ! Don't sit back and wait for them to come. Any ideas out there to help with the process ?

Let's get this thing going !

If you'd been around for the past few seasons, you'd know that such suggestions have rhetorically appeared and a few ideas implemented. Both the BUREAUCRACY of ISU/TH/HC and $$$ seem to represent the primary hurdles.

WINNING is the most effective PR tool of all.

We've had these threads already... many last year. I'd recommend searching for them as there were tons of good ideas in them. Here are a couple:

Bah, people that look for excuses most of the time find them.

You are dealing with several issues rolled into one. First: Though it has improved, ISU is still fighting the suitcase college mentality. Second: Greek Life is not what it once was on campus and that has a significant impact on involvement, attendance, etc. Third: Many of the students are working...in that I mean they are working, then they go to class, then to go to work and have little time for social activities. Fourth: Continued cutting of Marketing budgets on campus. Fifth: The lack of winning. Sixth: Lack of exciting on campus activities. Seventh: Location of Terre Haute as it relates to West Lafayette and Bloomington (to close). Eighth: Historical lack of interest by students for concerts, events, etc. Ninth: Focus of the ISU campus on what minority of students want to see (not meaning race, but small amount of students actually want to see the groups they attempt to bring in, Babyface is an example...maybe 10% of the students would actually want to see him anyway). Ten: The city of Terre Haute has historically fought against the idea of a college town.

That's me. Monday through Friday I'm working till 9:00/9:30 every night, so I can only go to weekend games.

Last Friday I took a small tour of the Hulman Center for my RCSM 135 class. It was very interesting and I learned some new things about the HC. The gentleman doing our tour (can't remember his name) said acts people would want to see won't come to TH because why go to a venue with 9-10K seats when you can go to Indianapolis and get double that. He said that the WWE event that took place a couple of weeks ago left both parties happy. WWE walked away with 6 figures in their pockets, and HC even made some serious dough.

That said, if they want to bring concerts to Hulman Center, they need to focus on acts that would fill the venue but provide a more intimate experience and have nice fan followings. Folks like O.A.R, Augustana and other bands would do very well I think.

Absolutely...Boda! Though OAR can sell out huge venues, they are a band that also appeals to the smaller sized audiences. Also, comedians have done well in HC over the years. Coolest thing I ever saw in Hulman Center (I was 2 years old in 1979) was Adam Sandler...it was histarical and sold out in like 8 minutes. It was awesome! To me it really boils down to bringing acts that college students want to see...Babyface is not an act that they want to see as a whole. Sure some do, but not many. WWE does well because it does well everywhere...there is a reason that Raw has been on TV forever.
