Talking shit in sports OH MY GOD!!! Surely not... I'm sure it's okay that Larry Bird is widely recognized as one of the greatest trash talkers of all time and has even been involved in physical altercations in battle. That's okay though!! But Deion and those thugs at Colorado nope. No can do. The fuck outta here.

1. Larry Bird
10 OF 10
Where do we even start with Larry Bird. He was a trash-talking menace. He didn't cross the line like Kevin Garnett, he simply got in his opponent's head and backed up everything he said.

The above video is the perfect example. He told poor Xavier McDaniel exactly how he was going to hit the game-winning shot and there was nothing McDaniel could do to stop it. That may be my favorite story of Larry Legend talking trash, but here are a few other close seconds:

Before the first three-point shooting contest, Larry went into the locker room and just quietly looked around until someone asked him what he was doing and he replied that he was trying to figure out who was going to come in second.

In a later three-point shooting contest, Larry was behind, but proceeded to hit his remaining few shots to tie it, then as he released the moneyball for the win, he turned and put his finger in the air before it went in, and, surprise, surprise, it hit nothing but net.

Against Dennis Rodman, he would call for the ball while getting smothered by Rodman, claiming he was open, then he would get the ball, hit the shot and tell the opposing coach that Rodman was making it too easy by not covering him.

Against Julius Erving, later in Dr. J's career, Bird kept a running tally of both their point totals, once Bird got to 42 to six, Dr. J had had enough and got into a vicious fight with Bird. Hey, no one said talking trash made you any friends.

Then, finally, in a Christmas game against the Pacers, Bird went up to Chuck Person before the game and told him that he had a present for him. During the game, Bird hit a three in front of the Pacers' bench where Person was sitting, turned to Person and said, "Merry f----ing Christmas."

With those stories, there is just no denying that Bird was in a class of his own for trash-talking. The Hick from French Lick knew just what to say and exactly how to back it up.

I don't think there will ever be another player quite as good at talking trash as Larry Bird.

I think what made Bird stand out in this category was his demeanor on court -- Bird talked miles of trash but he wasn't demonstrative in his talking, not like some players

Bird also didn't make it personal, i.e. he kept it confined to that player, that game - he didn't go after someone's mother, sister, wife, GF, etc (see Garnett, Kevin)

AND becuase he was perceived as a slow, unathletic, non-jumping "white boy" -- no one expected him to trash talk

So, why is The Oregon Coach taking a beating for his pre game comments?
With Deion, everyone in the media is in love with him. Dude says anything, the media hypes it up, but if you disagree or route against Colorado, you’re insecure, a hater, or sadly labeled a racist. I’m tired of the unnecessary coverage of a team that never belonged ranked, and they covered them like a top 5 team. That’s what my original post was about, but you had to label me as a hater!
You’re good at judging people you don’t even know.

Sticking my head in the bear's mouth here, but I will just say this, if you're going to talk trash, you'd better be able to back it up. Otherwise, you're just a mouthy idiot. Bird backed it up. Colorado might want to wait a year or two before getting too much into this, they're just not that good. :ROFLMAO:

Disagree. Every game there is being major trash talked it just isn't being reported to the level it is now. Colorado has also turned it up to 11 to use it as their brand to spark interest and it worked. They also likely didn't expect Oregon to film it all and release the clip like they did which was absolutely hilarious and fair play to the Ducks social media staff. However, you could argue that no press is bad press and it will likely just attract more talent to play for them of guys that want to be a part of that.

Remember when Notre Dame was going back and forth with Michigan State during the Weis/Dantonio eras? They were doing this same shit to one another, stomping on logos, planting flags, guaranteeing victories, etc. Save for the flag plant, nobody really batted an eye -- just two rivals doing rival shit.

Colorado was in G4 of Y1 after a 75% roster turnover and without their best player. They were 21 point dogs BEFORE losing Hunter. They had nothing to lose. Whether it works out long term for them is to be seen... but right now, even after the loss, people are still talking about Colorado football. They won even in losing and now they just need to make sure that social currency translates into recruits.

I thought you were "blocking me"? Don't @ me if you're publicly declaring me as blocked - it looks ridiculous for you. I didn't label you or judge you anything - you did that on your own by making 4 posts without a single reply. As for being "racist" or whatever I didn't suggest that - if that's what's being peddled in the media (I don't know) I would just say to you that this isn't the media - this is a fan forum where we discuss sports. I didn't see anything in your post that would suggest that you are that. I think one can dislike Deion and his style without being labeled racist.

And don't know what it matters here but I have no problem with the comments Oregon's coach made - I loved them and thought they were perfect. You can have it both ways... I don't know why he's taking a beating for his comments and I don't really care.

Colorado came into that game feeling themselves a little bit and they got kicked in the teeth. That happens in sports quite often - telling those athletes (any athlete) they shouldn't talk trash is a ridiculous suggestion. It's what makes sports fun and gives us as fans something to talk about - not directed at anyone in particular but quit being so soft. If you're not about the flash of Colorado and the way they talk trash and they way the celebrate turnovers and the media coverage they get then turn it off - tune it out.

Think about it this way... In a world where we give trophies to every kid and have parents that travel all over the country because they think they've got a D1 superstar athlete when they've got a kid that will never be such. Deion Sanders walked in and told every single one of them directly - you're not good enough to play for me. He told them the truth!! And you know what - shockingly enough that message resonated with the soft ass media we have in this country and they decided to run with it. He turned over what 80% of his roster and wins his first 3 games - has sellout crowds - incredible TV ratings and some of you don't want the media to cover that story???? Why???? What gives!

Sure... His trash talk was not the same kind of trash talk. And one can say his was more effective and he backed it up better than the next guy. That's why he came in #1 on the list I posted.

My point is - you can't love the way one person talks trash (Larry Bird) but not like the way the next person talks trash (Deion Sanders). Either you are for that sort of entertainment and gamesmanship or you're just not.

Counterpoint - and this is for anyone reading/posting if you're going to be critical of Deion Sanders and how his players "acted" pre-game then let's call a spade a spade. Larry Bird was General Manager of a Pacers team that freaking Ron Artest, Stepheon Jackson, Jermaine O'Neal and Anthony Johnson those guys combined for 136 game suspension and millions in fines after the Malice at the Palace... Okay. It's just facts - that's on his resume.

So if someone wants to go down this trash talking road with me - I mean buckle the fuck up. I'm here for it.

I don't disagree with you. However, my comment was more one of generally saying that if you can't back it up, don't spout it. Larry Bird backed it up. Deion Sanders backed it up. Fine, I actually enjoy good trash talk, but not from wannabees. If you can't back it up, shut up until you can. That's for everyone, not just Colorado. But that's just my opinion, and is in no way fact or even correct. Just the way I would behave.

No amen. If you're getting your ass beat and still chirping - I will never understand that. But to that point Colorado was just playing the part... They didn't back it up vs. Oregon I don't really think many people expected them to. If they continue to get beat and keep acting in such a way then it's all a front and everyone will see it as such.

Oregon coach told his players to play with your pads and not your mouth. They kept their mouth shut, and the fire was burning. Bet you’re not going to hear a lot from Mr. Sanders this week. If you do, it will be subtle.
And, piss off:

Actually, I CAN appreciate how Bird operated vs. how Sanders operated -- again, Bird talked TREMONDOUS trash but unless you were sitting courtside and heard him tell Chuck Person "Merry F**king Christmas"... in general, it was UNKNOWN that Bird trash-talked. Part of it was the media, part of it was the tech that captured/DIDN'T capture everything

It comes down to their personality and how they carried themselves on, off the field - the image/brand they wanted to create. And it's nothing new -- Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig grew up with approximately the same level of income in the home -- yet Ruth was a spendthrift, LOVED being in the spotlight, CREATING the spotlight; Gehrig was pretty darn frugal and didn't chase the spotlight.

Wow - and you're going to drag the Palace Malice into this discussion? DON'T lay that ruckus on Bird OR the Pacers -- Ben "Ass" Wallace was a MAIN factor in that fight. As was the non-existent "security" provided by the Pistons, by Detroit AND the trashy Pistons fans. Don't get me, wrong, plenty of Pacers made poor choices but that fight was NOT because of Bird -- hell, the FIRST thing he did as GM of that club (fight occurred in his 2d year on the job) was to purge the Pacer Nation of that cancerous Punk Ass Bitch, aka Isiah Bitch Thomas.

If you haven't watched the Netflix documentary on the fight - watch it, you see how Bird and the Pacers were NOT the cause.

I was watching it live that night with my dad as a kid. I’ve seen about every interview and piece done on it since. Fascinating stuff.

If that’s what you got from my post then no point in having a back-and-forth on the subject. Either I didn’t articulate myself well enough or you didn’t comprehend. I will go ahead and take the blame - so nothing to rehash.

we're talking past each other -- you're approaching it with a black/white, love/hate option -- I'm approaching it through tinted gray lenses.

Malice fascination -- ben wallace deserves more blame than he ever received.

kudos to the Detroit prosecutor for charging the cup throwing idiot... as to the ass clown who went onto the floor?! SMH should have gotten jail time

and how some random cop DOESN'T know who Reggie Miller is? in 2004?!?! See Jason's point about lil' taylor swift

Sanders has Colorado bowl eligible and playing very well

If Travis Hunter isn’t the Heisman winner at the end of the year they might as well throw the trophy in the trash since it is pointless. That kid is head and shoulders better than any other player in college football.

Colorado may end up having the top two draft picks in the NFL next year.

Will be interesting to see who Sanders recruits to play QB next year after his son is gone.

Colorado might be the only team in the country where the kicker has “walk up” music when he takes the field to kick a fg. 😄

That Boise State RB would like a word. However I do think him playing both sides of the ball is incredible and unlike anything we’ve seen. More curious what position he plays in NFL

The kid from Boise state probably will win it because it typically goes to the player with the gawdy numbers, not the best player

Travis Hunter is the best player. Period. A kid who can play every snap, break up multiple passes on defense and then catch two touchdown passes on offense. Will probably be the number one pick next spring.

There will also be some media members who won’t vote for Hunter because they don’t like Sanders and his team

Sanders with his sons replacement at qb

The question will be whether or not Coach Prime is there next year. A lot of people think his whole “I’m going to manage where Shedeur plays/gets drafted next year” is really code for “I expect an asst coaching position in the NFL”
