That was a solid break down with some good points. I actually enjoyed reading an outlook on us by another reporter because it didnt slant itself towards all of our weaknesses like some do.

Pretty fair article and a good read. If the run game can establish itself early, this can be a very, very good offense this season.

I am a little less worried about the run game in comparison as I am to fitting all of our weapons together. I want our opponents to forget about players only to have them show up when needed. Last year I felt like Hilton got the lions share of throws his way and rightfully so but this year we need to keep defenses honest to keep the double teams off of him. by doing this DBs are going to have to play off the line which will help the run game.

Alex Jones was used very well last year, and I hope they continue to use him the same way. Whoever the other receiver will be (Ednut, Spencer, Tanner Riley, Riston...) will need to step up and become a threat. I'd also like to see Lough get more touches on short passes out of the backfield. The durability of the backs (Bell and Harris) is key; if we have to go beyond them I don't like our ability to balance the offense.

And as far as the preview for the defense--how does someone include a preview without mentioning the two main cogs? Washington should have a big year as far as tackles, but needs to be stouter against the run (i.e., tackles for loss or tackles closer to the line of scrimmage). Burnett certainly put up some stats in terms of Int's and PBU's, but he also gave up a ton. We have had several other BCS transfer linebackers, so until we see Zakee actually perform, can't really comment.

I was figuring the other receiver would be our MSU transfer.

Our defense will be the key to our success this season. If our defense is like what it was last season, then expect some high scoring games and close games. We will need to be able to stop our opponents so our offense won't have to be put under pressure like they were against UNI.

I agree with Landrus, defense is the key to championships. If our defense takes care of business and our offense can control the ball and but some kind of points on the board we will be very competitive. I really do not want to have to score TD everytime we have the ball in order to win.

What about Cheeseborough? He's a solid RB. He had some very impressive runs last year.

Hey guys, I see you found my blog post on the Sycamores. :)

First of all, I would like to seriously thank this site for linking to my post and reading it. I had nearly 100 views today and I've never posted anything on my blog that has received that many views.

I sincerely apologize if I offended anyone with the ISU-Blue stuff. I only use it as another way of referring to the team without using Sycamores or Indiana State too much. SDSU folks get offended a lot when people refer to them as just "South Dakota" or as San Diego State. An example of this can be read here.

As for the team itself, I was sort of surprised how many of Indiana State's players are transfers and that was sort of a underlying theme in my preview. I think I counted 5 or 6 players who have legitimate Division I experience, not mentioning players who have played at smaller schools. SDSU, by comparison has two players have have transferred in from D-I schools. (1 from SMU, 1 from Missouri)

I touched on Burnett and Washington in brief and of course, you guys will have a better feel on the key players. Defense will be key but in all honesty, every team in Valley has defensive issues and that was seen in 2010 with the constant swings from week to week. One week, a team gives up 40+ on the road and follows that up with a stout 10 point effort the next week.

In my preview that I had to have in print in May (which is way too early), I had the Sycamores finishing 3rd, behind UNI and North Dakota State. Rest easy, I don't see Indiana State falling back to the basement, especially with Fouch.

If you don't mind a little shameless plug, check out sdsucollegian.com during the football season and especially for coverage on the Sycamores when they come to Brookings to face SDSU. I will also continue my conference previews on my blog throughout next week.

Thanks again. Best of luck this year.

As long as you don't call us Ivy Tech or ISU-Muncie, I think most of us will be OK with it. Thanks for the honesty. Most on here know that we can't just think that we are going to be good, we just have to go out and prove it to folks. That said, I do believe that most of us think we can do that~

Not sure if I ever said this, but I really get annoyed with the ISU-Blue and ISU-Red crap. You save ONE syllable... just say Indiana or Illinois State.

Enjoyed the blog entry, but chalk up the ISU-Blue and ISU-Red identifiers as one of my peeves as well. And regardless of rivalries or the history of the school itself, referring to Ball State as ISU-M is equally as lame. :krazy:

As always, stated IMHO...

So, you'd prefer we call them ISNS - Eastern Division?

ISU-Muncee wasn't TRULY independent until 1961, when their Board of Trustees was appointed.

I think what he's referring to is the fact that they have been Ball St. since 1961... which is 50 years now... it might be tine to call them by that name..

they had 'Ball' added much earlier than 1961 (~1925)...

I don't see myself calling them anything other than ISU-Muncee, unless I change to ISNS-Eastern Division... but that's more key strokes on the keyboard.

Tend to concur, it's about time we show some semblance of respect to our neighbors up north eastish.
