Bally #50

The JSW Level
9-17-83. Indiana State vs Florida Gators, a game played in a driving rain almost the WHOLE game. Final score 14-17 Gators and it was even closer than the score indicated. Lord knows, I don't want to watch the entire game this Saturday in a driving rainstorm but it is at least, a possibility. Coach Wilson is dealing with almost the exact situation that Trent did a few years back. He is a tough disciplinarian and there was a shitload of dead weight on the Hoosiers from the "bad" years. You are kidding yourself if you think the Hoosiers aren't a BETTER team than last year, and likely MUCH BETTER.

So if it does rain, it might help the undermanned Sycamores in this game. I have felt since the outset that many of you are underestimating the Hoosiers. My prediction, the Hoosiers by 3 touchdowns. I was thrilled when someone contributed the fact that we are taking home $450K or more for this game. That is almost double what we earned the last time we were in Bloomington. Sure, I hope I am wrong about the outcome. Let's see if the rain might serve as a great equalizer. I will be looking for many of you at our (my buddies tailgate) pre-game festivities and then at the SAF tailgate as well. Game ON~

Rather than focusing on the face thay many of us may very well be underestimating the Loosiers from Gloomington. Let's focus on how far this program has come and let's not focus on preparing people for a loss and what that would or wouldn't mean. 5 years ago having Sycamores fans predicting a win vs. a D1 program was unheard of. Don't dismiss what the Sycamores did to WKU last year on the road and don't for a min. try and persuade my mid to believe that this game is only about the money.

The Sycamores are playing to win this one and as a fan that is the expectation that I have longed for - don't try and take that away from me before the game is even played!!

Sycamores 37
Loosiers 34

IU

I watched the Big Ten Network Pre-season Review of the Creamed Crimson last week...when DiNardo said that they'd compete w/ Wisconsin for the Big 10 (12) championship, I realized it was the typical pre-season bullshit that we've heard since '67!:imslow:

Let's face the truth...IU fans don't have a clue HOW to motivate their football team. A "no doz" salesman could make big $$$ pushing the pills during their games. That's the biggest problem @ IU...not the players, but changing the CULTURE.:headbang: We all know, it ain't gonna happen. Why not?

SSOM, don't read too much into what I said. No one roots for the Trees any more than I. I am totally aware what this team has had to endure the past 3-4 years. Why would you think I would not know that? However, there are no rules that say everyone on SP needs to predict wins only on here. My reference to some over-confident contributors on here doesn't reflect anything negative either, just the facts. The Hilltopper victory last season was a remarkable victory but let's be honest here, as well.....they are not anywhere near where IU is talent-wise. What am I trying to "take away" from you or anyone else with that thread? I absolutely am aware that the Trees can come out smoking and beat the Hoosiers. Do I think they will. Probably not. But it could happen for sure. Let's not keep this site from allowing honest predictions. If you want that, I'd try the Sycamore Hoops Forum.

I enjoy your work on SP too much to make this a personal thing here. I am just a little surprised that predicting a loss is so hard for you to comprehend.

Couple of things .................
Rain "may" be an equalizer, but I want to beat these guys on a level playing field -- no flukes or excuses. And maybe its selfish, but I want to sit in those stands and enjoy our beating their butts, not dodging rain drops.
I do think this game is different than almost every game we've played in the past vs Big Ten or other major programs. Despite what players and coaches say before a game like that, most of the time everyone understands that you hope to play well, not be embarrassed, avoid injuries, etc. ---- you don't really expect to beat those major programs ( I doubt the ISU players in '83 really went into Florida expecting to beat what was a top ten team at the time)
Despite the final score we did that last year at Penn State -- did not embarrass ourselves and showed we had some real talent. I'm not in Terre Haute now, but I definitely get the sense this ISU team does intend to go to Bloomington to win on Saturday --- not just play well. I think they can do it.
Yes, if we make mistakes and get down early it will be bad. But if we can get Bell some running room, our QB makes good decisions and throws the ball fairly well I think we'll be fine. The ISU defense seems like it will do well if not placed in difficult situations.
Play like we can and this could be a signature win (too bad we follow up the IU game with a powerhouse like Quincy as a home opener).

This could be the year guys !

Rain to me would not be an equalizer--we are not built to play with a Big Ten team, or any team with larger lines and athletes, in those conditions. Look at the Western Illinois game 2 years ago in Macomb; brutal rain throughout the game, and our offense couldn't do anything. Gates and Bell rushed for about 70 yards on over 20 carries, and Lough was the only one who could effectively move the ball. Fouch was 6-17 for 52 yds and an interception. With this team, and particularly with Bell, I'll take a dry track any day.

Trust me, I have been looking forward to this game since it was announced a couple of years ago. I do NOT want to sit and watch it in a constant downpour as well. How ironic that we haven't had an "all-day" event rain wise in 6 months and the odds were going to be pretty good that we would not have one this Saturday, and then a fricking hurricane pops into the picture. I am still hoping that is blows itself out when it hits land. This three game series is a great one for ISU and I guarantee you that I will be at all three games as well as both IU and PU next season. Rain or not, it will be a fun day in Bloomington.

That's what rain gear is for--we've been pretty lucky the last couple of years. The only effect it will have on me is that I may have to find some shelter to keep my cigar lit.

Agreed and we don't have a Lough on the roster. Not sure of Foluke or Woz can do what Brock could do.

I actually think the rain might hurt us more than help us....I figure Bell is gonna have a 100 plus regardless if he's 100% healthy but we are going to need some help through the air to keep them honest. Not sure how good we do that in a down pour.

Well thanks... But I'm still mind in the clouds on this one. Anytime the Sycamores lock up with that school I go into complete and utter homer mode. It's beyond anything I can help and more often than not the Sycamore athletic teams go large vs. that school.

We will see...

I'd rather it be dry, so some of our guys, Shakir, Ben, can be more effective. We played in a mud bowl at Western a couple of years ago and were rolled.

I am keenly aware of your hatred for IU. And SSOM, you are hardly the only one on SP that feels that way. NOTHING would please me more than to knock the Hoosiers off on Saturday. I will have at least a couple of dozen IU alums who will search me out while we are tailgating and I would be thrilled to find them AFTER the game and rub it in. I just don't have the same hatred for the school. Love or hate has nothing to do with my prediction of losing by 3 touchdowns. The betting line will be more points than that! The fact that we are 0-3 against them and have been outscored 119-10 has more to do with that prediction than anything. I fully expect the TREES to do great this season and I feel they likely will be a playoff team. I just don't think we will match up with a team with 20 more scholies than we have, much bigger and faster players and much more to lose than we do with a loss.

The lights bother me more than the rain. Have we even gone to practice on a field with lights? I know it isn't the same as baseball, but it is a concern.

Very good point. However, I believe the scrimmage last week that was closed to public started at 8:00, so I assume they had the lights on then to simulate the game situtation. The game was WKU was also at night last year and didn't seem to have an effect on the team.

Is it Saturday yet?

You know some of you don't think for a moment that ISU has a chance, getting beaten by 3 TDs. I for one knows that the TEAM IS GOING THERE EXPECTING TO WIN[ AND WILL BE PLAYING TO WIN AND WILL WIN AND UNTIL I SEE THE FINIAL SCORE I EXPECT THEM TO WIN TOO!!!!!!

RELEASE HELL IN GLOOMINGTON!!!!!!!!!!!!/B]

4 to 7 inches of rain forecast for Saturday/Sunday in Indiana, gonna be a fun game to watch. Could be lots of turnovers, We're gonna have to hang on to the football for longer periods of time so the defense can rest.
