The Odum Level
What is it going to take to get our passing game going? Just curious to see everyone's thoughts.

My first response is w/o Bell it isn't gonna happen because it allows the defense to intensify the defense's attention to Fouch.

Was looking at Panthernation's game thread. Kind of alarming to see one of their posters say: "Indiana St. is good, if they had a decent QB they would be very good. He missed many wide open recievers and threw a lot of picks."

I'm certainly not trying to be overly critical of Fouch, but today was one of his worst games at ISU, if not the worst. I'm just wondering what we can do to help him because we all know he has the potential to be a great quarterback. We've seen him at his best. Is he hurting right now/playing through an injury? If not, what do we need to do more of to get he and the receivers on track? More screens? Some more draws to take the pressure off? I know a big part of it tonight was playing a team as solid defensively as UNI. No question, but I know we can get better.

One glaring weakness...

He doesn't read the whole field of play...meaning...he hones in on one receiver. If your scouting him...that's what you tell your corners and safeties. Hence the two picks yesterday...

He also has a tendancy to throw behind his receivers...another indication/variable for pics.

However, if he were able to distribute to more receivers he would be much more effective. In his defense, it does appear that our receivers give up on routes all the time. They also are weak at getting separation.

Short pass game helps the long pass...go to the Tight End and backs out of the backfield more often.

Come on guys, Ronnie Fouch is THE MAIN reason for our turnaround. I don't think the other coaches in the conference would say they see any of the shortcomings mentioned above. He has had some upsets, but he has also had his receivers let him down several times. A couple of picks have been due to receivers quitting on their routes, or not competing for the ball. Our line is 100 times better than 3 years ago, but every QB faces pressure, and sometimes this is when mistakes happen. The passing game is not what is was last year--how many teams are? They will be fine, we have faced some pretty tough and athletic defenses. I'll be curious to read the commentary after they go off for 4 or 5 TD passes in one of these next few games.

Ronnie will be fine; had to chuckle to read someone post he doesn"t read read the entire field...he's excellent reading his reciever's routes. Did throw in to double coverage a couple times but this was a VERY tuff place to play...17,000 Very loud (in fact we had ISU fans screaming and cheering when we're attempting 3rd down lol) indoor stadium...makes it a lttle difficult to focus! Players said their fans on the sidelines tauntling Ronnie the entire game. We got a little glimpse of our offensive potential (rushing and throwing) at WKU but I still think we're improving...

Didn't know we were at Weecheetah. Oh, shame on me...:naughty::naughty:

this is a different system too....same running scheme...but I notice a lot of our routes are verticle....last year we did more trail routes and kent was a good slot who went across the middle alot....ronnie is just a little out of sync right now...plus when you have a running game going...it is harder than you think to watch shakir run all the way down the field and then chuck the ball over defenders on a vertical route 30 yds down the field on the money....he has to keep his arm warm....little things....but if ronnie fouch chokes the rest of the year....still thankful for him...very good qb who could start lots of places but chose the sycamore fam....they will correct it...

We need this guy to talk to the passing game. We have to be aggressive, not throwing into triple coverage but take SHOTS.
Not to be nostalgic of when I had a semi rocket arm and not the Water pistol it has become, Coach always used to say, "You get 3-4 deep shots a game to keep them honest, take it because if it doesn't look open it may come open, all it takes is a long step."

I'm looking this coming Saturday to be our breakout game with the passing attack. It's the second half of the season. Time to open it up and let our talent shine!

Agreed we'll shine as the little bugs are worked out.
I want to thank all you guys on this site for teaching me something new every time I read the different threads. Not only am I learning about the finer points of the game, I learned something very important tonight....
I need to not yell, scream or whistle, which I must say, is quite loud, when WE are on the third down! Ooops. Sorry about that!and seriously, thanks again for all the help you guys give to the parents of the freshmen players. Most of you don't have a clue how many people use the info they've gotten from here. Another freshman mom told me exactly that at the UNI game. Someone really needs to come up with a parent handbook for the families of the new players....

Yeah that's really needed. My sister played college basketball (not all four years). watching my parents try and figure out ALL of the ridiculous things is pretty terrible.

Here is a handbook for you. But I am not sure if it covers things like not yelling when your offense is on the line of scrimmage which prevents the players from hearing if the quarterback changes the play or the snap count.

I was surprised by how many in the ISU section were cheering while we were on offense Saturday. It didn't make a big difference as the UNI fans were already loud enough, but it made no sense to me.

They do it at home, too. The band also has played during key offensive downs when we were calling in a play -- last year against Missouri State is a prime example and I mentioned it in my post game thread.

Easiest rules for cheering:

When on O, cheer following any play. Be quiet when our guys are calling in the play or trying to audible or make adjustments.

When on D, be loud at ANY time, especially when they're calling in the play and presnap as they may be trying to audible or make adjustments.

Basic lessons of football fandom, but I think it's going to take our fans a while to get it. It also annoys me at home games when people sit during key plays. I've wanted to stand in the past only to watch as everyone around me stays on their butts.

You are there supporting the team so you get a pass! Bless you for your spirit and enthusiasm. My wife likes to scream and celebrate after we make a tackle 20 yards down field...lol...it's a game, let's enjoy it! We had a couple UNI fans tell us after the game our crowd did make some great noise for our size...keep it up Sycamore fans!

Does the problem with Ronnie have anything to do with the change at offensive coordinator? Steve Englehart was always an offensive play caller and had a real emphasis on the passing game. Coach Ehtheridge maybe more acclimated to the running game with his background as a offensive line coach. Just a thought!
