Vigo Schools Tax Referendum

WANTED: Passionate Sycamore Fanatics. That You?

Whatever happened to the concept of get your hands out of my pocket. My taxes don't need to increase 10-15 percent. They are counting on the stupid people to vote in favor of this. Just read their own words as to why we need new schools. They had no reason except the combined ages of the schools. Individually they are about the same age as Human Center.
Don't forget, Cunningham Library was dedicated the same weekend as the '73 NCAA Regionals during HC's 1st yr.

ITF is 100% on target re: quality of materials used in construction, but that's always been a manipulative tool by contractors & inspectors, hasn't it? Adds more gravy to the biscuits!

I just don't get it,
Apparently they want to build new high schools now in VC and raise all the property owner's taxes AGAIN. I couldn't think of a better time either. You know when building materials are stupid expensive currently, everyone is getting hurt with that 8% inflation, and the gas prices are sky high. But yes let's suck the public even more dry. Hopefully they fail at passing this referendum, but I'm sure it will somehow pass like usual.

I went to THN for a year about 10 years ago. I think I heard that they drained the pool the year after I left. The school was kind of dirty, which should be expected when you have a bunch of Hautian teenagers together in one place. There was a serious spider problem. One dropped down from the ceiling during class one day in front of some girl's face 😆. Okay, so they need to hire more janitors and spray the place. Maybe try doing some maintenance on the schools once in a while too, instead of just begging everyone to fork over money for brand new schools.

Oh and they just built what appears to be a brand new gym for Otter Creek MS. They can't find money for maintenance, but they can find money for middle school basketball. Of all the terribly run government operations in VC&TH, the VCSC has to be at the peak of the mountain of incompetence. I'm not sure if any other operation here has ever had the FBI raid their building or not.

The school board deserves to have their asses ran out too. They voted in favor of this tax referendum 6-0. I've seen the same names on the little yard signs since elementary school. Time for a change. They're beyond pathetic and shouldn't even be in charge of the friers at McDonald's.
Our high schools are 50 years old; they were a bad design and they've not been maintained as they should have, I get it. That's all water under the bridge now and to take that out on our kids and grandkids by not supporting new schools is ridiculous and short sighted. We probably should have built just one or two, but that wouldn't have made anybody happy either. People complain about TH, but when people try to change things, they get nothing but ridicule. High schools are also a recruiting tool to bring in new business. I can tell you without a doubt that we've lost businesses because of our schools. We are competing against places like Avon, Plainfield, Carmel etc. for these companies and we need all the help we can get. I don't want new taxes either, I'm as conservative as they come. But, sometimes you have to sacrifice for the good of the community.

Vigo County high schools need attention, period. Having your taxes raised for new schools is worth the investment for the overall good of the community. Like meistro said, Vigo County is competing with other counties for growth and business opportunities and other communities are or have invested in there schools. Bloomington just spent $45,000,000 on a middle school and it looks like it should belong on or be a college campus, it’s a nicer facility than some community colleges. They tore down the existing school because it was beyond renovation and system upgrades (mechanical, plumbing, and electrical). These are things the public doesn’t see and these systems are changing with technology. Band aids could be done, but don’t last and lead to more money. They could update the finishes and make the schools look nicer, but if you put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig. The community needs to vote yes for the greater good of the community. If you want to have nice things, something has to give.

Just how much money should the taxpayers have to spend per child per year to teach kids to read and write? Throw some numbers out. I would like to hear them.
Are speaking in terms of facilities or staffing? If the former, are you wondering about upgrades vs building new? Just trying to see where you are focusing.

I have to LOL at the notion several people have made about businesses not coming here because our high schools suck. That's got to be the dumbest argument yet.

You folks realize it's not 1965 anymore right? A high school diploma literally only gets you a job at retail or fast food. If you want a good job you either need to learn a trade or go to college for a couple of years.

The reason companies are moving to Avon and Plainfield is because they want to be in a nice part of the Indy metro and close to the airport. If they're moving to Bloomington or Lafayette, it's because they want to be near IU or Purdue.

I'm asking what people think is a reasonable amount of money for the taxpayers to spend for the education of one child per year. That includes everything.

What's being overlooked is the NEGATIVE impact of higher property taxes upon home construction and the real estate market in general, which is #1 on the list of "quality of life" factors while attracting employees.

Does anyone know WHY Ohio Twp/Newburgh grew off the charts during the past half century? LOW property taxes. Most are migrants from neighboring Evansville/Vanderburgh County. While the rates have risen considerably over recent yrs. to compensate for parks, law enforcement & water/sewer expansion, they still use the old Castle HS (built in '59; now a M.S.) and "new" Castle HS (built in'75). Yes, there have been renovations & renewal $$$ spent over the yrs., but nothing close to $1/4Billion...

We lost businesses because an owner drove by THN or THS and said we're not moving here, that's an ugly school? Or did they not want to be here because of the bad job the schools do educating the kids?

You can laugh all you want, I know for a fact it's true. All you do is complain about Terre Haute, but don't want to actually support things that will help. Schools, quality of life projects, vibrant downtowns, parks are all tools to attract businesses and young families. They may not be important to you, but they're important to most people.

Sounds to me like they haven't done the necessary maintenance on Vigo Schools over the years, in hope that Vigo property tax payers would bail them out with new schools down the road.

I complain about Terre Haute because it's ran by a bunch of fools. People are struggling to get by as it is with inflation, record gas prices, high food prices, etc. And VC thinks now is an appropriate time to raise property taxes on everyone because of their own incompetence over the years?

The problem with Terre Haute is that much of the population never wants to improve anything. They just want to keep doing the same things over and over, expecting that some day, it will produce a different result. And even then, if it did miraculously produce a different result, there would still be a sizable percentage of the population that would be against it. BASF, anyone?

Things won’t miraculously change for Terre Haute. There must be investment involved. However, if the population doesn’t want the investment, anyone who wants to make the place better is just pissing in the wind.

I hope the people over there can come to some sort of arrangement to improve the prospects for people over there. I doubt it will ever happen, but I truly hope it does.

Some of us are trying.

They didn't give a good reason for wanting new schools. A combined age of whatever is not a reason. Give a good reason and I may vote for it. If not, I will vote against it.

Does anyone recall the "pay to play" charges that undermined former Vigo Supt. Danny Tanoos a few yrs ago? How many project costs were inflated because of this administrative fraud? Nothing like ACCOUNTABILITY when using your tax $$$. And I'll be damned if he's not hired @ Katherine Hamilton as a "Safety/Security" expert! LOL
