Just a little creative activity this fine Saturday morning. If you were Coach Lansing, what would your top five issues you'd want to address before the 2012-2013 season? They could be general or they could be player specific, it's totally up to you.

1. Bring in a coach, with experience, just for the bigs.
2. Pressure Defense-What team in the MVC does this well?
3. Rebounding
4. FT Shooting
5. Conditioning-Especially Strength

1.) Team Chemistry
2.) Shot Selection/Shooting
3.) Offensive rebounding and being able to get the easy put backs
4.) Defensive pressure and ball screens
5.) 3PT Shooting

1. Team Chem
2. Speed/Endurance/Conditioning
3. Offense - something beside the weave. Teach kids to come off screens, use screens and move without the ball.
4. Different defensive approach - mix it up zone, press, man to man
5. Player development

Lets switch it up, when our defense was actually clicking our offense was better...

1. Health/strength/conditioning--get everyone healthy; emphasize team speed
2. Team chemistry
3. Shooting--both from the line and the field (2's & 3's)
4. Varying offense--be less predictable
5, Varying defense--be less predictable; press and press then press some more--see #1

1. One hundred percent agree with a big man coach.
Our bigs were out rebounded by the pg. The one and three combined for more boards than the four five combo.
Our bigs took terrible angles. Get defenders on your hip early. Seal.
Screen without fouling. Slip the screen with proper drop step. Open to the passing angle.
Crash the boards and block out--to many rebounds given to oponents without a body on them
Run the floor with a purpose.
Work for a mismatch and demand the ball.
Recognize the passing lanes and get in them ready to shoot.
Make the bunnies. ie. finish

2. Push the ball in transition and take advantage of the imbalance created if there is none run the offense. Walking the ball across half court does nothing but let the defense get set and shorten the game. Work on a productive offense. If a motion is what we run, run it as hard as possible not as slow and predictable as possible. When we make buckets, we are a better defensive team.

3. Change the defensive and offensive sets to make them adjust to us. We were so predictable an eight year old sitting by me was able to tell me what was going to happen.

4. Make it fun. Winning is fun but it's easier to win games if you're having fun. Which leads to a motivator...find a coach or player to motivate, challenge, and pump up the team.

5. Get rid of preplanned substitutions during the game and sub with a game purpose.

If there is anything about this game that coaches do that defies logic it is #5. There is nothing like ill timed substitutions to stop a team on a run and break momentum.

Did anyone catch the debate between Reggie Miller and Len Elmore while calling the Syracuse - Kansas State game. K-States best player went down with an ankle injury and went to locker room to get it taped. By the time he came back to the bench, K-State was on a run and had tied the game up (or come very close). Miller said to put in the star player right away, Len Elmore said to wait because the players in the game had gone on a run and why break that momentum. Miller responded that you "dance with the one that brought you" and that when your star player is ready to go, you put him in. Interesting discussion, and I can see both sides of the argument. I think Len Elmore was right though, never mess with a good thing or interrupt a team on a run.

1) Team chemistry plus chemistry between the coach and his team

2) Offense- Coach carefully evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each of his players and constructing an offense around them. An offense that is specifically for the group of players he has on his team for that season.

3) Shooting

4) Stronger defense

5) More aggressive rebounding

#1 will solve #3...a must if ISU hopes to improve productivity inside.

Also would amend #2 by adding the concept of "D-creativity"...mix it up & keep the opponet off balance, while adding to your transition offense (there's an alien idea to the ISU vernacular).

#1 above all else...size that can play...Miles did a nice job at times but was limited offensively. THey need someone that they can go to in the post and score, play D and grab some rebounds. I realize it can be tough to come by but let's find that and then worry about the other 4 things.

Thought i'd say more than just 5 headlines just to be different. These are the things I think we need to hit hardest in order to get back to the top half of the league next season.

1. Big Men Development- Kitch, RJ, and Gant need to hit the weightroom and work on post defense. Also need to develop some sort of post offense. Doesnt have to be a staple of the offense but we need it to at least be able to throw it in there from time to time to take the pressure off the guards and wings.

2. Team chemistry/roles- We have a lot of new players coming in and a lot of roles that need filled.

3. Improved coaching decisions- This sounds like a knock on lansing so let me first say I am 100% behind him and believe he is a good coach, but a few things he could really improve upon. He really puzzles me with his subbing patterns (with his bigs mostly). I thought kitch or gant would have a good game or stretch of mins. last year only to not see the floor again for a couple games. Its hard to play well consistantly when you know your getting yanked for any mistake and any good play goes unrewarded. Also the fact that he was so loyal to his seniors even to a fault. If player A is not getting the job done you dont keep playing him just because he is a senior.

4. Team Shooting- Lets face it we couldnt throw it in the ocean most of the season. Our percentages from 2 were not very good but our 3pt% were down right gross. Odum and Steve have to be better shooters in order to be a starting guard combo on a good team. Even our "good" shooters didnt shoot a great percentage. RJ was (34% from 3 and 39% from 2) and Printy (37% from 3 and 35% from 2). If your going to be a team that is undersized and average athletically you better be able to shoot the ball better than we did. Our lack of shooting is another reason I think we should go after a shooter with our last scholarship for next season.

5. Arop/K.Smith need to be the real deal- This team needs a shot in the arm athletically and length wise and these two could help us in both areas. It would be nice to have one of these two or both be our go to scorer next season as well. From time to time when your team is struggling to get good looks by running the offense it helps to have guys who can get their own good looks, someone you can just give the ball to and get out of the way.

I like a lot of what people have put down here. I don't know if I have 5 items, but, I know I have at least a couple...

1) Coaching. In this case, the "bigs". Over the last several years, our team height has increased, and we responded last off-season by getting rid of our only "bigs" coach. Something needs to be fixed.
2) Coaching. Improved defensive philosophy. We struggled when teams changed defenses on us, how about we turn the tables?
3) Coaching. Improved offensive philosophy. Hopefully the "newcomers" will give us additional players who can get their own shot (or create a shot for someone else). We struggled this year when defenses keyed on Odum, essentially shutting down our offense (see Butler game).
4) Coaching. Improved team unity/chemistry. Either the coaches need to figure out how to get the guys to play better together, or, the coaches need to bring in different players.
