Super super super early in McCollums career at Drake. But if he is able to make some noise this season with mostly D2 guys Drake could become a mid-major power. They have a perfect market in Des Moines, big enough for great media deals, could cultivate a huge fanbase, and you have big companies with deep pockets to fund things if needed but it's also small enough to not get lost like in Chicago, Philly, New York, Houston, etc.
I'd slow down a little with that line of thinking. 6 years of consistent success under DeVries with multiple NCAA appearances didn't make more than a dent in Des Moines being a Cyclone town

Where was the Stirtz kid at previously? W/ him at his D2 spot? That kid is pretty solid... They haven't really played anyone at this point until today.

Dominant win by Drake over Miami. Miami got as close as 4 but it never felt in doubt.

I didn't think McCollum would win a game against a P4 team before DeVries did.

Yup, came over from NWMS with the coach.

Let's be real, they have the formula for success. Private school, great sized market, non-scholarship football (or no football). Des Moines has a metro population of 709,000. For comparison Wichita has a metro of 647,000, Omaha: 967,000. Iowa also doesn't have a SINGLE professional team, and there really isn't too many near by either in other states. Yeah you have Iowa State close by and Iowa for superior in-state competition but the only other D1 school in the state is UNI. Compared to Indiana where you have IU, Purdue, ND, Butler, Ball State, Fort Wayne, Evansville, Southern Indiana, IUPUI, Valpo as in-state competition with the Pacers as well. Yes, 5 years of success under DeVries isn't going to make Drake a power. They've been near the bottom of D1 for 40 years, it's tough to make up for that, but if they start/continue to invest in basketball they have the makings for a sleeping giant at the mid-major level.

Drake V FAU tomo AM! Very very interested to see that match-up. FAU is long and athletic. Can Drake keep up? Are we 20+ pts worse than Drake? Who knows

Yep, I thought it was a qualification to get funding.
North Carolina has or had the same stipulation... UNC and NC State were required to play ECU - at least in football on a regular, rotating basis.

Heels went 20 years w/out playing them and W-Pack went 9-10 years w/out

Ok Drake can shoot it. Cam Manyawu is a solid big man. FAU has size and speed but cannot convert. Drake just motions all shot clock and hits an open 3. Up 4 pts 2 mins to go in 1st

I think continuity is more important than anything now. Watching a group of 4 d2 starters take it to teams like Miami and FAU. Last year Drake was the DeVries show, this team seems much more balanced and deep.

Yeah Drake didn’t miss a beat. Just handled FAU all game. Haven’t watched Bradley yet but I’d say Drake is the team to beat

Bradley looks decent. They had an awful second half against Washington State when they went down by 10 and pretty much gave up, and they took their foot off the gas against Texas State yesterday and made the final score closer than it should have been.

Drake maintains a small lead the whole 2nd half and beats Florida Atlantic 75-63 on a neutral court. Drake is pretty darned good. Lots of similarities to last year's Sycamores.

I agree. If you can convince guys to or afford them to stay together that appears to be the recipe for success.

McCollum is 3 weeks into his D1 career and if I'm an athletic director at a P4 I might be throwing the whole damn budget at him

Elijah Elliot left SIU’s most recent game with an injury. Not sure what it was or if it will cause him any missed time. But if he is out for any length of time it will be really tough for the Salukis. He is the straw that stirs the drink for them.

Just for S&G's, but if the wheels are aren't falling off at SLU then they sure are wobbling. Schertz said the second half against Wichita (not a) State Shockers was the most pathetic effort of any team he has ever coached. The SLU spoiled brat forum is calling for his head.

Evansville looking good right now against Campbell. The Camels are really bad on defense. Losing guys on switches, not picking up anyone in transition.

Aces moving the ball well and have assists on 75% of their baskets today. Not an overly athletic team but if they play disciplined like they are today they will be tough to beat at the Ford Center.
