With NIL why do we even need scholarships?

Yes, because most schools don't have as much NLI money as they're letting on. Many of the kids are getting the money on their own outside of the school and their collectives. But they will definitely be used in the future by schools to make up the difference to keep and retain kids.

There are a couple things here:

1) If you're a walk-on, once you go to scholarship, you cannot become a walk-on again if I understand NCAA rules correctly. So you're committing to the remaining eligibility of said player. So if the coach chose not to renew, they will be forced to transfer out. You lose that optionality.

2) There are ways to get kids schooling paid for. I wish Joel McMullen actually contributed here to clarify, but if I'm understanding what I've learned from other coaches correctly, you can deduct whatever academic or institutional aid the student qualifies for and the remainder is what gets billed to the athletic department. For example, a kid could get a Pell grant, then qualify for some of the various Indiana State scholarships which can reduce their rates as well as eat into it and then they are left with a smaller bill. This is where something like a NLI could pay the difference and essentially make the walk-on whole as if they were officially on scholarship.

I know it's been quite a few years, so the rules could've changed since then, but Doug McDermott was a "walk-on" his senior year at Creighton.

People have regarded this kid as the best player in the history of Greene County. That is pretty damn good considering you have the likes of Brody Boyd and the Graves brothers from the area. I think you go for it. And I’m not saying that because I’m a Greene County resident. This kid is a Power 5 talent. You have to look at guys like Cooper, Odum, Jake Kelly as comparable local talents that we have landed. This kid is a better athlete than that list hands down. Yes we need a 4-5 man. But you take best available for your 13th scholarship.

Are you even serious?
Why would I not be serious? A 3-star kid who’s 6’5”, knock down shooter, great athleticism who was going to a big east school. You don’t think he can crack the top 7? Were you serious when you argued on here that Ted Morris was going to be good? That right there makes your opinion irrelevant on player evaluations.

Coming in a little hot this morning…

You didn’t take time to “understand it” the first time I explained this so I’m going to talk slower! Not about the kids ability to play day 1 or not. Knowing what you know about the situation do you really think it’s in his best interest to play at an Indiana school or close to home?? I don’t. I think getting away would be good for him. I think he deserves a reset and to be as far away from Linton, IN as he can get.

Exhibit A: Craig Porter. Goes to Wichita State - gets out of Terre Haute, gets out of Indiana, leaves behind a lot of negativity in his life and creates his own pathway and destiny in life.

So while I fully realize that it’s not up to me to decide what is best for Hart as I don’t know the kid or his family or his friends. I can look at the situation and say I want what is best for the kid above what is best for Indiana State. He’s been through enough at this point.

Now let’s talk talent/ability/top7 you really got him as a top 7 player on this roster out of the gates huh? Who has Hart played physically, mentally, athletically that would give you the impression he comes in here day 1 and makes an impact? Who exactly? Better yet - who has Hart guarded that makes you think he can guard at this level? You have to be able to play both sides of the ball. I think you’re strongly underestimating the transition from 1A Indiana Basketball to D1 College Basketball. Newsflash to everyone - Jake Odum played in the MIC Conference it was still the MIC back then. Arguably one of the best high school athletic conferences in the country. He was battle tested. It wasn’t all that difficult to project him being a good D1 college basketball player because the step up in competition level wasn’t as drastic.

My only disclaimer is that admittedly I haven’t seen Hart play really at all. I checked out on following him when I knew IndState wasn’t in on him. So other than some highlights and stats posted on the twitter I’m speaking only in generalities and asking questions that could convince me otherwise as I haven’t seen the kid play.

And again I will reiterate - Hart can’t play Center and backup Robbie. We need depth at the PF/C position if we are going to add a player at this point. As a Jason pointed out earlier if you want to do a Miller for Hart swap then fine that’s one thing. But if you want to do a Hart for unknown future Center that’s another thing. It just doesn’t make sense right now! A month ago when we had 5 openings maybe. Not now. Too late.

Well, maybe my evaluation is worthless. People can take it or leave it. That's what opinions are for. I watched a game last night and
you are giving him way too much credit. And I admit that a HS game is not the best place to judge someone.
I saw a wing, shooter that can get high on his outside jumper. You are welcome to enlighten me if you are aware of any PG or defensive abilities that I am missing. Do you think he is better than Neese or Crawford?

I didn’t even remember your original post. I didn’t read all this one. Also, Hart played in 2A, which was the 2nd best class in Indiana this year. Which is why North Davies went from 1A-3A and skipped 2A which is what they had to do because of their success factor. I don’t care about their defense. If someone’s athletic, they can be taught how to play defense. In the past we’ve worried about trying to teach people offense and our record suffered because of it and we would score in the 50s.

So you’re just dismissive and not really interested in a conversation… Got it. You’ve come to the right place smh

Excuse me, mr. enlightened, I think 2A is the 2nd class from the bottom.

Class 2A this year was loaded with real good teams....True Blue is exactly right; that is why ND moved up to 3A to avoid playing the those top 2A teams at State. I bet you see them go back to 2A soon. You just dont get many guys with the athletic ability and shooting ability combined that Joey Hart has. IMO Hart has the athleticism of a Cam Crawford, but a better shot.

Now Cam Crawford was a plus athlete… But JS who loves him some long athletes decided to move in a different direction.

I’m at a loss here. Dawon Cummings is a better athlete than Cam Crawford would ever dream of being.
