Can Sycamores football rise again? fans, alums ask

There really is nothing in this country that matches the pageantry and atmosphere of the big European soccer matches. Big college football games would be about the closest you can get.

I apologize for going even more off topic, but I heard on ESPN that the NFL has thrown around the idea of relegation like you see in soccer around the world. That would be awesome in all of our pro sports, maybe even college! Punish teams that don't try to improve by dropping them to a lower level and making them fight to come back. It would be like dropping the Royals to the minors and bringing the best Triple A team up to the bigs next year.
i like the concept of the highest Triple A club moving up and the lowest Major League Team falling down

Clubs like Pittsburgh Pirates (no playoffs in 15 years, low end on salary structure, etc) would be forced to be competitive. This would also work for some of the non FBS series college athletic teams. Doubt it would work in FBS conference level.

ISU flat out stinks. A stadium, while novel and perhaps smart, will not imporve the team nor draw any additional caliber players. field a decent team, draw attendance, hit up alums for money

The facilities are definitely part of the recruiting attraction. Granted, not as important as the program, winning, fan support...but absolutely a part. You can see the look on kids faces during recruiting trips when they see top notch facilities versus low-end stadiums, weight rooms, locker rooms... As a newcomer to the program (although I understand the history and the woeful shape the program has been in for the past 10 or so years), I wonder why there can't be more community and student support. Terre Haute is a much bigger city than Carbondale, MaComb, DeKalb, Muncie, Charleston... I would hope they would want a native son (Coach Miles) to have success coming back home. The $10,000 from the former players is nice, but how many actually contributed? (50 players at $200? 100 at $100?...). The program needs money, and it is stuck in the chicken-before-the-egg problem--"I'll contribute if they put a program on the field I can be proud of". How about being a part of contributing to helping the program to succeed?? I'm sure the students, including the players, could contribute $10 (use one night of money spent in some wasteful way)--this would add some real seed money. The businesses? I'm all for paying some type of small tax at restaraunts or hotels as a visitor.

For those who need to see improvement before contributing, how about some type of pledge per win (my wife is one of the new team Moms struggling with the losing, and threw out that she would donate $1,000 per win). Oh well, just a new guy kind of venting and throwing out my humble thoughts.

It would be a nice thought if the team had not been decidedly mediocre since the 1980's.

I lived in Terre Haute, trust me, not many people leave that area. The same people have put up with miserable ISU team after miserable ISU team for years with no end in sight. Why would they pay their hard-earned money on that? Until the team starts winning, don't expect huge donations.

Huh?

:evileye::evileye::evileye::evileye:

Sorry, guy, but you're dead wrong. Think recruits would face a tougher choice between a nice, new stadium at INSU versus those old pieces of sh*t at ILSU, SIU, WIU and EIU? Do you have any idea how hard it must be to recruit youngsters with that old bleachered-ass, off campus softball field?

Think alums and the community wouldn't love to sit in decent seasts in a nice, new stadium? Then, think they would be more inclined to donate if they thought the University was serious about the program by building that new stadium?

:naughty::naughty::naughty:

You've got it all backward, son, bless your little heart. You even acknowledge that a new stadium would be smart......??????

:(

ISU might as well plat at West Vigo it is probably a nicer facility

i'd love to see ISU start a campaign towards a new facility. If ISU is serious about football they'll find a way to recruit better players and play a schedule that at least gets them close to .500 football. if they can post back to back .500 seasons i say break out the donation forms.

i belive the Gateway is a very good FB Conference. I know playing Tulsa, L-VIlle, etc funds the season but why not play DePauw, Wabash, etc on an annual basis. Low travel. Students would travel and perhaps pay to get into the games, etc. Find a way to win and get butts in the bleachers or in the grass.

demonstrate to me they are serious and i'll contribute.

No offense, GUY, but, how old are you? Really?

Like I said earlier--this is the chicken before the egg mentality. You need the money to recruit and continue to build the program. Do you not get any feeling that the suspensions, the playing of all of the Freshmen and Sophmores, the promising play of some of those underclasssmen is NOT and indication of something different?? The coaching staff needs money to recruit areas other than Central Indiana, and want to recruit more in Penn, Ohio, the Chicago area, and Michigan. We have some good young talent from these areas, and need more. Lowering the level of play to DIII schools (even the good ones like Wabash) to get a couple of wins is not going to help recruiting. Continuing to sell the new attitude and the continued strong schedule (in conference and the 1 or 2 DI games) is the better way. This core of Fr and Soph will win with another good class coming in.

I don't go to games to see a new stadium, I go to watch my favorite teams play. I do however think that a lot of people do go to see the new facilities different cities buy for their teams. I would love to see a new stadium built for ISU football. We will have to win first before the wallets will open. The money will need to be used for facilities, promotion and cattle prods. The last listing is to get the students and locals off the couch and out to the games. Even at the outragious price of free, it's hard to get the students out. If ISU ever is to become a 1st choice for students and athletes, we must give them a reason to want to be here. A winning football team can do that. If we win early in the fall, maybe we can get the freshmen hooked on ISU before the bad attitude of the upperclassmen gets to them. They might want to stick around campus over the weekend because of the big game.

You could already see last season that people were ready to cheer for the football team. More fans were at the games early in the season. I don't think people have given up hope. We win that opening game at home against the div. 2 team this year and I think more fans will come.

I went to the SEMO game and the crowd was decent in numbers and into the game. The band did a great job keeping the crowd into as well. I had a great time (except for the end of course).

the semo and missouri state games

anybody who was at the missouri state game will attest that those in attendance were ready to celebrate big time. isu had a win right in their lap and couldn't hold on. a face mask penalty put the bears in position to score the tying touchdown as time in the fourth quarter wound down.

but i do know that there were several games last season that if the sycamores could have made one or two more plays, either offensively or defensively, they would have come away with wins.

semo, missouri state, northern iowa, youngstown state on the road, north dakota state on the road. that's five potential wins right there that didn't come to pass. but they were in position to win those games.

now those freshmen from last season have had a taste of what missouri valley conference football is all about and hopefully understand better what it will take to win. and those freshmen who were redshirted due to injury or just sitting out will have a year unde their respective belts to get bigger physically and improve mentally.

I think that the days of getting beat 72-10 or 60-7 are over. I was able to watch every game last year. There was a very obvious difference in the team at the end of the season. As Tom mentioned, we were in position to win a couple games. 3 of those games were conference games. We are ready to compete!

I always mention kids that I was impressed with during their Freshman season. Here are some notable kids that were very promising in camp and ended up receiving redshirts.

OL - Casey Paswater, injury
LB - Aaron Archie, injury
DE - Jordan Bright
WR - Jared Blue

Look for more true freshmen to come in and play this year. I actually heard that Raetz is bringing in a player almost "identical" to Alex Sewall. Uhhhhhh, I'll take that! This could be a nice defensive backfield for the next 3 or 4 years. I think we can all agree that Raetz knows a little bit about defensive backs.

will they have a new playing turf so they all don't tear their ACL's again in practice this Spring/Fall?

Also, on the news the other night, TH South TE Michael Mardis verballed to ISU.

Nice to see some lineman on that list of recruits. I'm already googling some of those names.

Any word on how well Archie has done recovering from his injury? A lot of people were really high on him heading into this past season.
