Joe Burton their second best player is out due to academics.. This is a game we need to get if we are serious about turning this ship around.

We must protect the home court in conference if we have any shot at avoiding Thursday in St. Louis. I think it’s going to be tough sledding on the road for us in the Valley this year, so we need to take advantage where we can. It’s also very tough to start the conference season on the road, and add in the facts Valpo will be playing their first ever MVC game and without one of their top players, we have a shot to get off to a good start.

With this game, we can hit the reset button on the season. It's all about getting better, staying out of the Thursday games and giving ourselves a chance in St. Louis. We've seen what we can do when we've had a great week of practice. So, let's have a really crappy week of practice and see what happens. I'll be there Thursday night regardless.

Valparaiso is a team we should definitely beat. If we don't win I will be very disappointed because they are not a very good team right now. Most of their wins are against "cupcakes", so their 9-4 record is a little bit deceiving. They were totally demolished at Purdue and at Northwestern. They even got taken to the woodshed against UC Riverside, who is not very good either. If we can't beat these guys at home then we are in big big trouble.

I think the big trouble was established long before this game was ever played. I'm not sure a win or a loss really changes much for this team. It just makes us 1-0 and we've been 1-0 before this season. This game is not nearly as dire as you suggest if we were to get beat and vise versa if we were to have a convincing win.

I don't understand why folks thing Valpo is a game that should be a guaranteed win.

First, it's a solid program.

Secondly, have you seen how we've played this year?

Go State...we can do it....but a guaranteed win?

Should've done your HISTORY homework, talking 'bout the ol' kick ass rivalry IS had w/ Valpo in the old ICC Conference, rather than present them as a "newcomer." Hell, you probably don't even know who GENE BARTOW was...or the 60's sellouts in Valpo & TH when they battled for NCAA Small College tournament berths, both hosting squads & coaches among the top in America.

They're a "newcomer"... only to the MVC.

Bank....they're referred to as "league newcomer" and later it states, "This is not the first time the two schools have faced off as league foes as Indiana State and Valparaiso were both members of the Indiana Collegiate Conference from 1950 through 1968."

What more do you want?

Do you think that a single line "blip" on the PC screen is gonna convey the history that formerly existed in this RIVALRY? TRADITION must be taught...especially when there's been gaps between the two schools. Player names, scores, coaches, copies of the TH Trib-Star on KEY games, etc.

"Indiana State and Valparaiso were both members of the Indiana Collegiate Conference from 1950 through 1968" - duhhhhhhh.

Btw, Duane Klueh was a guest on GL's "7th & Elm" show last week. Curious if they rehashed the ol' rivalry between ISU & Valpo under the topic of "Games Around the Corner?" Would've been a good opportunity to talk about this once-strong ICC match up and the ELEMENTS that made it great. Gene Bartow, who followed Wooden @ UCLA, had a great rivalry w/ Klueh during his Valpo days. I should note that shortly following the 1967 NCAA Regional Championship game loss to Valpo (80-77) @ the ISU Arena, Coach Klueh resigned. He was voted "ICC Coach of the Year" in '67 as ISU was Co-champ and ranked as high as #4 Nationally. SIU (Walt Frazier & boyz) was ranked #1 but snubbed the NCAA, opting instead for the NIT in NYC, which they won as a SMALL COLLEGE.

I agree with others. Time to reset. Second season starts tomorrow and I think we come away with a hard fought win.

Won't be able to watch it live due to a holiday dinner for work, but will be coming home to watch it on tape as soon as I can.

Go Trees!
