Sycamores take the opener against Valpo, 73-64.

Welcome to the Valley, Valpo. I'm sure our return visit will be a fun one when they're at full strength. Glad we could eek out a win.

Sit Murph down before his hot head ends up doing something stupid.

Going to monitor to see if he threw an elbow now.

Murphy is really lucky they didn’t call a flagrant on that play. Looked like he hit the Valpo player in the face. At that point we were holding onto a 4-5 point lead and a flagrant could have completely changed the end of that game.

Murph's IQ is awful. You're under the basket... why wouldn't just just grab that and dunk it?

It was nowhere near the kid's hand, either. Awful.

He should NOT have been in the game down the stretch...also recall the Valpo tip-in @ :47 & layup @ :41?

Great minute from JB. He wasnt great tonight, but he stepped up there. Murphy...ugh..kessinger should be out there right now

Valpo dogged him all night he finally got loose. Other than a few awful drives and turnovers he picked his places well. His shot selection is pretty solid most of the time.

Edit: just checked the box and didn’t realize he had 8 turnovers. Wowzers

Sycamores Ride Strong Second Half Shooting To MVC Opening Win

image_handler.aspx

Indiana State owned its largest lead of the game, 12 points just over nine minutes in the game but trailed at the half by three before pouring it on in the second half en route to spoiling the Missouri Valley Conference debut for visiting Valparaiso with a 73-64 Sycamore victory inside Hulman Center.

Man, I'm glad we won that game, and some real positives on the defensive end I thought. A couple things that really stick out to me after this game. We have the absolute worst substitution patterns in college basketball. Why do we need to sub out a player after 3 or 4 minutes when they're playing well? And then wonder why they don't play well after sitting out for 10 minutes? God love Murphy. Seems like a great teammate and kid. But, I've seen enough to know that I don't want to see anymore. Please coach, shorten the bench and keep the hot hands in. Also, I didn't see Hunnerman or a Ojinnaka on the bench tonight, any word?

I liked the play of Davis, Kessinger, and Hughes. Don't feel like anyone else had a remarkable game. Some solid team D mixed with some very stupid play.
Murphy was awful. He really HAS to find someone to pass to MUCH quicker.
I counted 19 points missed in the first half at the free throw line or from point blank range in the lane.
Some really bad passes and some badly mishandled good passes.
Overall, ISU played poorly but good enough to beat a so-so team on a bad night for them. I like the win, though. Hopefully ISU is saving their A game for when they need it.

Got home late and just finished watching a little while ago.

Nice to get a win, and nice to get a win on a night where we didn't play well. Could have been a much easier game if we had hit free throws and put away some easy ones in the first half.

Murphy seems like a great kid, but he has some of the worst hands I have ever seen. He can't beat a double team with a pass or a move because it takes him two seconds to get control of the ball. Not sure why he was in those last two minutes when Valpo obviously wanted him at the line. Kessinger would seem to be the better option at that point.

Speaking of BK, solid game by him. Several rebounds, good post D and some nice put backs. Hope to see more games like this from him.

Davis played well and Scott played under control and didn't try to do too much. JB struggled but came up big in the last five minutes when we needed him. Was glad to see Hughes more agressive on the offensive end.

Also give credit to the coaching staff. Saw more changes in defense in the first half then I have seen in a whole season in years past. We were much less predictable. Was good to see and hopefully this wasn't a one time thing.

Wasn't the prettiest game, but a win is a win, and we needed a win.

To be fair, a couple of them were tossing it inside tonight where it went right through some hands (and that last one was BS at midcourt).

Davis might have been the best player we had on the floor for the better part of the first half. I don't suppose we can stretch his eligibility beyond this year / he has a clone coming down the pipeline?

Why does everyone that bashes Murphy feel the need to qualify it with he seems like a good kid. Does it make you feel better about undercutting him? Just call it what it is - he sucked. Played 20 mins and managed 2 pts 3 rbs and 4 turnovers. Good kid or not that aint a good day.

Right. Anytime anyone starts a sentence with some qualifier, you know what's coming next.

I'm not trying to be rude, but...

Scott has been much better the last several weeks than he gets credit for. He has his out of control moments but he’s not been chucking early 3’s in the shot clock and he’s been getting his points in different ways. Probaby our only guard that’s been able to finish through contact around the basket.

Key drives in often out of control and throws up some wildness. Barnes isn’t big enough or nearly athletic enough to finish at the rim. Hughes will play through contact and finish at the rim pretty well. Other than those 2 it’s 3 pointers or bust.

Solid win last night.

Loved that Hughes got the start, even if it did have to do with that fact that we've had some players at less than 100% health.

Will we break .500 in the MVC?
So far, so good.
Will this be Devin Thomas' break-out game?
Didn't happen.
Will JB drop 20+?
Didn't happen.
Will Scott drop 20+?
Didn't happen.
Will any other player drop 20+?
Didn't happen.
Who will prove themselves as the vocal leader on the court?
I saw a few guys being more vocal, solid team effort.
Of our bench guys, who will play the most minutes?
Key with 26 minutes.
Who do you consider our sixth man?
It's a tough one since our starting line-up changes so often.
What will it take to win this game?
Good shooting and good defense...we had both.
When will ISU get over that 12-win MVC hump?
Man, I hope it's this year.
With a 9-win non-con record, where will Valpo finish in the MVC?
I'm gonna say top half of MVC, no worse than 5th.
Will Rick Smits attend this game to see his son play?
I don't believe he was there.
Can we please just win one, for the Gipper?
I think we did!

Speaking of not having a good day, how about Valpo's two 7 footers? Between the two of them, 2 points, 3 rebounds and 4 turnovers. Surprising considering the large height advantage they had on us.

Yeah I mean for sure, great point!

Maybe Murphy, Kessinger and Rickman deserve a little more credit than we are giving them for the work they did on that side of the ball. Those guys all pretty much canceled each other out stat wise with Kessinger putting together a pretty good box. Thought he finished pretty well and was pretty aggressive - one of his best games in fact. Carry over? Please carry over. We desperatly need another option other than Scott, Barnes and Davis.
