I don't know... I have not been involved in any specific # conversations so don't take this as gospel - this is just my opinion on value.

I think I'd probably throw $40,000 at JD. I'd throw $30,00 at Camp. I'd throw $20,000 to Walker. $10k to Vorst.

That leaves a good amount of money for him to go out and get a couple combo guards in the portal that can score it at a high level. But if Camp or JD want north of $50k I'd probably tell them - test the market.
Just for argument's sake; let's say you throw those amounts at those individuals and they all stay. You are sitting at 100k invested in 2025-26 already. If you REALLY wanted to compete at the top of the valley or make some noise with a 20+ win season you are going to need at least 2 guards/combo guards that can score and an impactful big man. That would get you 7-8 players you need to compete at this level. Now if you are able to get those 3 key portal players at at our NIL budget we are sitting pretty.

But on the flip side let's say you invest 100k on those 4 and you absolutely flop in the portal. That means that we are 100k+portal$$$ invested in NIL with a pretty average team at best.

I don't know even know what answer i'm looking for but this whole NIL/portal BS is impossible to navigate it seems.

I'm still trying to construct an incentive based payment system. like depending your deal you get $1,000 per win, $20,000 for a MVC title, $1,000 if attendance is above 6k, $10,000 for all-mvc team. I don't know how you'd structure it because you wouldn't want to reward selfishness but surely there is a way to pay these kids more if they produce and not pay them if they don't produce. You know, kind of like how we get paid with our jobs.

I meant Walker… My bad.

Camp. JD. Walker. Vorst will be priority.

Alderink and Bruno is probably an unknown.

Legree. Summers. Trending toward out.

Cook. Out.
We surely can afford a one way plane ticket for Bruno’s NIL. And I am still saying you will see Summers next year at USI! Alderink is gone, his little girlfriend that kept him signed here is no longer I heard. So nothing else except maybe his bro Vorst keeping him here unfortunately.

Just bc his girlfriend is not here doesn’t mean he won’t stay. JD’s gf doesn’t go here.

Understanding that Drake's situation is unique in that the coach brought a huge chunk of his D2 team with him, I think a good route to follow might be trying to recruit 2 (or more) successful D2 or JUCO players from the same program every year.

I don’t agree. Drake’s not a good example bc the part that’s missed with Drake is he brought his starters from a d2 national championship team.

Correct, and as I mentioned, McCollum brought "a huge chunk", which was four players. It didn't hurt Schertz to bring some of his guys,
but as you rightly point out, from a D2 powerhouse. I just think that a limited NIL budget means that you're more than likely going to be annually "shopping from the bargain basement bin" of guys leaving other D1 programs unless you're a hell of a salesman. It would seem to me that unless the current landscape changes, the Big 10's and SEC's are going to mine the lower level D1 programs so thoroughly that picking off some high end D2's might provide a few Cam Henry's and Xavier Bledson's to give your roster instant veterans who have some chemistry.

I said when this all started a few years ago, it would create the same scenario as MLB...St Louis Cardinals to Memphis Redbirds, to Springfield Cardinals to Peoria Chiefs to Palm Beach Cardinals, etc.

I remember hearing an interview with McCollum before the season started and he said something to affect of "Schertz told me he regretted not bringing more of his D2 guys with him for the first year or 2." Obviously BM took that advice and hit a grand-slam with it.

I am interested in how a guy like BM who feasted on finding under recruited guys, or guys that fit his system, develop them, and create a hell of a program do in this portal and NIL world. Before he was protected by being D2; i'm not sure how many D1s would go after his guys with the D2 tag stuck to them. Now he is killing it in a top 10 D1 conference; the risk of the big boy calling one of his guys is incredibly higher with their production at this level.

This is why I contend he may be a quick jump to P5 program if he gets offered this offseason. There is no doubt his agent is fielding calls likely as we speak. You also have to remember that once he built the powerhouse, he was essentially getting the cream of the crop for guys that didn't go D1 and then could develop them.

With MM ball now essentially stuck in no man's land, early returns show that multi-year stars are not highly likely. He is a cultural fit for both the Indiana and Virginia jobs IMO and there are likely to be another 4-6 that also open. Iowa, Villanova, Boston College, UNC, etc... there are a ton of guys on the hot seat.

I think IU will go after Beard. Pitino Sr is pushing for it.
