Fudōtokuna: $chertz to $LU

If Graves indicates he does not want to be considered for the head coach, then it’s likely he will follow Shertz to SLU. So, is it a good idea for him to meet with the players Tuesday?

Rumor is Schertz is bringing our former assistant Boisvert from George Washington to be his AHC and then has been mandated to have certain hires with his two other assistant roles.

Graves family resides in a community near indianapolis. I believe he said they would not move until the kids finish high school. I think he has resided in an apartment during his tenure at Evansville, Xavier, and ISU

Hahahahaha, I wonder just how much control Schertz will have with billionaires behind the curtain.

I also thought I saw on x that semmler or someone else pretty reliable saying that Graves wants the job and will throw his hat into the ring. Graves seems pretty ingrained in central Indiana and would only want to coach at ISU, Butler, IUPUI, Ball State, etc. considering he already supposedly turned down IUPUI and it's one of the worst programs in the country. It's not surprising Graves would gun for the ISU job.

NCAA isn’t open on the weekend.

There is a process they have to follow. They have to submit paperwork to our compliance office and then they submit it to the NCAA. My guess is we'll see things happen early next week but hopefully later next week because that means they at least spoke with Graves and considered whatever he told them.
Also the final 4 is a dead period

We need to keep Graves and Furr. We have little choice other than to name Graves our new head coach. We are in no position to wait 45 days to name a head coach. It will take the trustees at least 2 weeks to decide on a new president. Then who knows how long it will take to name an AD. Remember, the Debster resigned September 15th after she reluctantly signed Shertz's salary increase and extension. It sat on her desk all summer. Look how long it has been and still no new President? She needs to leave as soon as a new president is announced..then change the locks and re key her office.

How young are these children? 16 at least (they're mentioned on his 2008 Butler bio...)

Not sure I beleive this. After all the reporting nationwide for weeks he was going to SLU, the team was "blindsided" when he said he was leaving? I mean, if he flat out said to the team in black and white he's not leaving no matter what, then yeah he lied and they can feel blindsided. But knowing the whole time he's leaving why would he risk alienating the entire team--especially since presumably he wants to take some of them with him?

As the hours go by this whole thing is getting less and less relevant and will fizzle out, Angie/Deb will promote Graves or hire someone else, the portal will be busy with incoming and outgoing Sycamores, and that'll be that.
As others have said, it can be both. I thought he was gone as soon as he started following the SLU guy on Twitter. I never wavered in my belief he was taking that job. I was not blindsided when he left. But, I was not in any conversations with him. I fully believe that what is being reported is true and that he was telling people he hadn’t made up his mind or that he was staying. So just because you or I or anyone from the outside thought it was obvious doesn’t mean people on the inside couldn’t be blindsided.

It could be he knew he wasn’t taking any of his assistants with him so he was telling them what he needed them to hear. It could be he didn’t tell any players or parents because he didn’t want someone to accidentally out him in social media or interviews, so he told them the narrative he needed to be out there. When Robbie told the fans he had two more years left when they were chanting “one more year,” or when he told Pat McAfee that they had a lot of returning guys so they wanted to keep playing, maybe he was just being PR savvy, or maybe he was under the impression they were coming back. During the time out when we went up 77-70 Thursday night, Robbie’s dad was chanting ISU with as much enthusiasm as anyone in the place. He did not seem like a parent with one foot out the door. Maybe he was just excited about the moment, but maybe he thought this was going to continue. I have no idea since I have not personally spoken to anyone involved, so I accept both scenarios could be true. They may have known, they may not have.

And while I’m making this way too long of a post, let me say that I have no ill feelings towards any player or their family if they transfer. They are clearly all good young men, and that didn’t happen by accident. Isaiah’s mom made a really nice post on Twitter showing the crowd during one of the NIT home games and talked about what a great experience ISU has been. Jayson’s mom has made many great posts. Ju’s mom has made really nice comments. Robbie’s parents. I’m sure the list goes on and on. These are great guys because they’ve been raised well.

My son didn’t play sports, but he had a lot of really good academic scholarships. He had a full ride to IU or Wabash, and got a lot from Butler, though not a full ride. He narrowed it to Wabash and Butler. Wabash was $55,000 a year and they offered him $55,000. Butler was $59,000 a year and they offered him $43,000. He chose Butler. I knew it was the right spot for him too and paying the $16,000 a year instead of $0 was worth it because of fit. But, if after his sophomore year Wabash or some other school came back and said they’d give a full ride plus pay him $100,000, I’d have encouraged him to transfer even though he would have hated leaving Butler. So I get that it can be a tough decision for the players and families and I wish them well. I won’t go a be a fan of their new school because I am a Tree, but I’ll understand.

And for those who can’t seem to understand that people are mad at the way Schertz handled everything and not that he is leaving for what he thinks is a better opportunity, let me again reiterate that I have no qualms about a coach taking a better opportunity. The issue is how he did it. I know that has been posted hundreds of times on here by most people, but for some reason there are a few people who can’t quite grasp that the issue isn’t with him leaving, but how he left.

That’s it. Thanks to the one person who read this whole thing! :)

Here's the national board he's talking about. Linked the page where they were talking about us for those that are interested.

So here are the posts by fans of random teams talking about us. Like OX 92 said, people just love to watch a trainwreck!

Schertz's brother signed up on the Indiana St board last night leaking he was leaving before it was officially announced, and the interactions got ugly. There's a 73-page thread of people losing their minds.
And the supposed brother didn’t enter the chat until that thread was in the 60’s, I think?

I get why ISU people are pissed. Schertz going onto social media and rebuffing the claims and that program and team stuff just to have it reported within the same day he told the team he was leaving, just yeesh. This is the same guy who gets spotted following Chaifetz, then unfollows when discovered. The situation sucks.
Reading that board, I'm surprised they didn't go rioting through Terre Haute. LOL That fan base completely imploded.
That board is something else. The whole school is imploding, administration-wise. Their fan base wants to hang (figuratively) the outgoing school president. She apparently forced the athletic director to resign at the end of 2023, supposedly because he went behind her back and got funds and terms to extend Schertz. The president is retiring this summer and is apparently burning all her bridges. Based on what I read there, she was also looking to blame him for the debacle which caused them to miss out on hosting a baseball super regional last season.

The interim AD is an ISU lifer, a former track star there who was formerly married to Schertz's predecessor. Her brother is also in the ISU hall of fame as a standout basketball player.

So they'll have an interim president with an interim AD. And, they were ready to pay Schertz $800,000 while SLU is paying him $2 million.

Just as the fans are excited about the season that just ended, the new coach will be walking into a dumpster fire.
Yep! The interim AD, Angie Lansing, is the sweetest person ever! She's worked in the athletic department there forever. Her brother was Michael Menser, who hit a buzzer beater to beat IU when Indiana St hosted IU in the early 2000s. He was the star player of their last NCAA Tournament win in 2001.

Here's the crazy part...her last name is Lansing, not Menser, because she was the wife of the previous head coach Greg Lansing. So Schertz's interim AD was his predecessor's former wife. LOL They have since divorced.

The drama with the president nixing the opportunity to host the baseball super regional last year turned into a fiery Vigo County meeting. That town's drama is something else.
That 2001 team beat Oklahoma. OU has lost three NCAA tournament games to Indiana State. One was in the Sweet 16 in 1979 to the Larry Bird team, the other two (1995, 2001) were as heavy favorites in the first round.

I learned a lot about Indiana State just by reading their message board for 30 minutes today. From reading there, it also looked like this president was looking to make the former AD the fall guy for last year's baseball fiasco.

The next basketball coach is walking into an uncertain situation, to say the least. Josh Schertz won 32 games there this year in spite of everything going on with the administrators.
Yeah, hires made before permanent hires at higher levels on the organization chart in a place like higher education pretty much sucks. But, honest/personally, if Schertz stayed, now there's two people to contend with above him in the pecking order who didn't install him as coach. He could have a better season next season, make the tournament, and I bet we get the same outcome then as we do now (he bolts). You could tell some at ISU moved mountains to try to keep Schertz there, but it wasn't led by the leadership, and that can be problematic.

Still, Schertz comes off like a bit of a bonehead, though. The dude needs a marketing/PR team in the worst way. Keep him away from social media, at least. Also, the way things moved in the MVC as other teams' seasons concluded (especially what happens now at Drake), his ISU program was in a prime position to emulate this season's success for 2024-25. Pretty sure he gets better offers than just SLU, too. And that's not a jab at SLU (well, it kind of is), but, I don't envy what's ahead of him.

TIL ISU made the NCAA tournament in 1995. Way to go Sherm!

Here's what some jackass Bradley fan had to say over on MVCfans. Brian Wardle definitely fits into their culture pretty well over there.

No kidding. How can any Sycs fan be surprised by this?

Their fans - by far the most rednecky, dumbass group we’ve seen in quite some time.

If it's the tribecalledquest guy, I think he's called every fan base in the league "rednecks" and implies a bunch of these fan bases are racists. He really hates white people.

I rarely ever wonder over there to that site, and on the rare occasion I do I instantly regret it. There's a BCPanther guy over there that always does a great job at making an ass out of himself too. Considering that's like half of their active users over there I just stay away.

So, I would like to know. Did they really have Sushi or am I slow on a feminine hygiene joke?
