What an emotional roller coaster. Last night was an absolute heartbreaker. The past 3 games have been an awesome experience to witness in person, and the team has been a blast to watch all year. It was pretty cool to essentially have the entire college basketball world watching our Sycamores last night albeit with a different outcome than we all wanted.
The loss of Schertz hurts. Especially to a program like SLU. Had he gone to a reputable program, I could live with that. Money aside, it still boggles my mind why someone would leave our program now, given the success and support it’s currently receiving. If SLU is where he intends to hang his hat, fine, however I don’t see that being the case. That move just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Maybe it is all about the money at the end of the day.
I am so proud of our alumni, fans, and particularly the Terre Haute community for rallying around this program. I never thought it would be possible to sell out an arena as many times as we did this season. It is proof that you can win here and build a successful program.
I really hope the next administration comprehends how important athletics are to the university. I pray that the Schertz departure doesn’t mean a return to the status quo mediocrity we’ve witnessed for decades. We’ve got to capitalize on this momentum and continue to fund and support our successful athletic programs moving forward, particularly basketball, baseball, track & field, and cross country. I think it’s time the university had realistic discussion about moving forward without a football program.
