WANTED: Passionate Sycamore Fanatics. That You?

Register NOW to join our community of die-hard Sycamore fans.

Perhaps you can elaborate on the position of ISU Pres. Bradley v.1st Bank's Greg Gibson re: "construction mgt. of HC?" Gibson made the following statement, "I want the community to get a good deal on this project..."

I'm already seeing vestiges of conflict between the University-City-County and contracts have yet to be issued on the project. Does ISU wanna get stuck w/ another 25 yrs. of Cliff Lambert-styled HC Management? Looks like it might be headed back down that road, when BASKETBALL was "just another venue" showcased by HC.

BTW, whatever happened @ HC a couple years ago, when Gibson took his 1st Bank "toyz" and vacated HC?

For starters help me understand the description of "1st Bank's Greg Gibson"? Greg Gibson has been a board member for the bank along with several other high profile organizations in town like Union Health System, Rose Hulman, Hospice Etc. But Greg is involved in many business ventures around the area and is best known for being a developer and partner in Thompson Thrift Construction. 1st Bank is owned by the Smith family most notably Don Smith and most recently signed over to Norm Lowery Sr./Jr. from my understanding. Gibson had nothing to do with 1st Bank removing shit from the HC. Where do you come up with this stuff? Coffee at McDonalds? Let me vet all this shit for you before you go around spewing at the mouth all the time.

Given that background you can get a better understanding why Greg would advocate for a "CM at risk". From my perspective he is likely trying to limit the amount of control that Indiana State has over this project given that funding is coming from several different directions. My pops has been in the construction field for a long time in this community and could explain all of the methods that could be used for this type of project much better than I: Design Build, Design Bid Bild, CM at Risk probably several others to oversee the completion of this project from design to handing over the keys.

Bradley trying to have as much control as possible given they are responsible for the largest amount of money going into this project and they have teams that the building is most notably assosiated with the University. So he is trying to protect his interest(s) as well.

Both Bradley and Gibson are very smart people and have had many business dealing/negotiations over the course of a lifetime. I think they can work through this without any problems. That is why I wouldn't speculate too much on what is said in the paper or on the news about this project. They are going to be able to come to a comprimise on some of this stuff - they will have to.

Meistro on this forum is a construction guy - he could probably explain a little better than I did.

You outa try that "coffee @ McDonald's"...might lend greater insight into the politics of TH from those who have EXPERIENCED the era, not just drawing inferences from Union Hospital coffee break symposiums.:cheeky:

BTW, you're not telling me anything that I didn't know before. Of course, Gibson is on on your "good side," primarily because of the XC course and the new Track & Field. It's called "Prejudiced Perception." Smith-Gibson-Lowery- Hulman...same bathtub!

HAHA. I'm blogging on here gaining insights on the daily... I've learned so much. Just usually prefer some Basil Hayden's rather than coffee.

Lil' insight & history, Twitch:

In 1970 my ISU fraternity house burned to the ground on S. 6th St. Hulman personally moved our fraternity into The TH House until a NEW home was found. Do you know which home he financed for us? The former CHAPMAN ROOT home @ 1224 S. 6th. Do you know anything about DON SMITH's connections to CHAPMAN ROOT (originator of the Coca Cola "coke bottle")? Check out Don Smith and his "Early Wheels Museum."

Ya, TONY HULMAN was an "Honorary Alum" of Theta Chi Fraternity...it's a small circle that MANY in Terre Haute have touched. The stories of Hulman's attorney (Howard Batman) partying w/ the Theta Chi's are legendary.

I know where Chapman Root's other home was in Terre Haute (Allendale) okay. Don't try to let me know about TH history, who the hell you think I am?!

It is a small circle no doubt. Let's get back to the topic at hand here Bank what do you say?!?!

Who do I think you are? A 30 yr. old "flapping his mouth" that knows a microcosm of what he THINKS he knows...

BTW...don't forget that the person hired to MANAGE Hulman Center in 1978, CLIFF LAMBERT, was a "drop of leaking oil" from Don Smith's race car collection (Early Wheels Museum) and from a "paint brush" of the Swope Art Gallery (which he also "managed").

In today's newspaper, you'll note the plans of DUKE ENERGY to develop the Hulman Airport area. Do you recall when DON SMITH (formerly Tony Hulman's right hand man) sat on the Sigcorp Energy Board of Directors? Sigcorp merged w/ Indiana Energy in 2000 to form VECTREN. Well, Tony H. George now occupies Smitty's ol' position on the Board...same ol' fraternity - Gibson, Hulman/George, Smith (and his "designates" given his old age).

Where is Vectren based?

Gotta love all this bullshit talk by all you Terre Haute "insiders" ---- he this and him that .................. all crap.
What matters is what is done to Hulman Center, how well its done, and just as importantly what happens when its done and open for events ---- ISU basketball and other events.
Given the past years since HC opened the above have to be real concerns. The sterile environment of the early years weren't so bad -- many other venues were somewhat similar in those days -- but the constant chant that Hulman Center was not to be seen as simply ISU's basketball home began to take its toll (that basic idea was not evil in itself -- it was for other events and was shared with the community).
Other venues at both the college and pro level began incorporating displays, tradition rich décor, new technology, innovative promotions, etc.
With the Bird years you thought ...... finally ! Now they'll do some really nice things to HC ..........folks coming in to HC will be proud and amazed at what happened and also will be able to see and feel the tradition of ISU basketball/sports from the past.
But ............pretty much nothing. Stupid territorial arguments, stagnation, moronic management, and many lost opportunities. Hell it seemed to be a monumental development when a few pictures and a couple of trophys were allowed to be put up.
Its in everyboy's interest to do this renovation well and there is no reason it can't fulfill all parties needs. If you gone to Notre Dame the past few years when ISU played them you can see how well this all can be done. If you've been to Banker's Life for a Pacer game ............now there is the model ISU -- Terre Haute should be looking to copy -- designated areas celebrating various aspects of the ISU sports, Terre Haute history & culture, etc. etc.
That could wonderful -- for all parties.
Terre Haute ...........ISU ...........Vigo County .............Are you listening ? ? ?
Take the concept at Banker's Life to Hulman Center !
Don't screw this up again. You have been handed $35 million "free money" from the State of Indiana.
Don't screw this up !
You can do this ...........follow the lead of the Pacers and Indianapolis ............

It's the "he's" (and "hers) that are responsible for the design & operational success of the renovated HC. Can't quite figure your post out - you highlight "bullshit talk," then make a 360 degree turn:

"Stupid territorial arguments, stagnation, moronic management, and many lost opportunities. Hell it seemed to be a monumental development when a few pictures and a couple of trophys were allowed to be put up."

These are the very same thoughts that you characterize as "bullshit" early in your post. :tumbleweeds:

My original comments were directed @ the inherent POLITICS involving Pres. Bradley & Greg Gibson in the initial CIB meeting. I followed w/ the "history" of TH Politics re: Hulman Center Mgt. (Cliff Lambert), attempting to paint a picture of WHY the CIB Board needs to get this RIGHT w/o prejudiced decisions.

Aren't we talking about the SAME THING?

We are but my point is many folks on this site and around Terre Haute/ISU are always posting "inside info" -- they know something or someone. You may be exactly right about your points -- I don't know -- not there.
I just want to see the whole thing done right and run right -- for all parties. That's why I suggested following the Banker's Life theme -- perfect for this situation at Hulman Center. Something all could be proud of and serve everyone's interest.
