Pro Days at Indiana State in the past....
Back in the day, during Coach Raetz' tenure, we would have anywhere from 10 to 12 scouts show up for Pro Days. We usually ran Pro Day on the indoor track at ISU or out at Rose-Hulman in their indoor track. Sometimes out at Memorial Stadium.
The number of scouts attending and teams represented all varied depending on who the seniors were at the time. When Wayne Davis and Vencie Glenn were coming out, the place was packed.
Davis and Glenn both ended up being second-round picks.
We had a good turnout when Kirk Wilson and Dan Brandenburg were eligible for the draft. Charles Swann and Ed "Poncho" Martin also drew a lot of scouts.
I used to know a lot of those guys. Raetz would have a get together afterwards at the bar near Memorial Stadium for all the scouts who came. He would introduce the scouts to all of his assistant coaches as well as me and other athletic department personnel who were on hand.
I became friends and acquainted with several of them, like Jeff Shriver from the Bears, Elbert Dubinion from Buffalo, Ron Marincek from the Cowboys, Kent McCloughan from the Raiders, Jack Bushofsky from the Colts.
Since I was a Rams fan as a kid, Raetz used to have the Rams scout there and we'd get into a Rams trivia contest, which I usually won to the amazement of the Rams scout.
I really enjoyed meeting all those guys. I still see several of them from time to time in my job now covering the Colts.
