I don't think that the "new" chief is anything official. In fact, I am pretty sure he was not. Nobody knew who or what he was but the university likely knew nothing about it. The original chief was rather authentic. This guy looked like he borrowed the stuff from a costume store. If anyone knows the story about it, please pass it on.

What the heck is 'authentic' about a PLAINS Indian in Terre Haute, Indiana?

Chief Quabache SHOULD have been a MIAMI Warrior!!

Better a Miami Warrior as opposed to a Miami Hurricane. I came across this shot of the semi-chief from the game Saturday. Like the rest of you, I appreciate his dedication (I think I saw that his name was Eric) in trying to instill some excitement but as we have discussed here ad nauseum, it is likely that the University will eventually butt in and use the PC argument to halt his efforts. I was very much a part of the original Ouabachi decision and I loved the concept when they came up with the Chief and the princess. (You old timer's might even recall we had a Teepee in the end zone as well). But I also understood why he was "shelved" eventually. We'll see what happens.

As stated earlier, I give him high marks for wanting to be pro active but my guess is that someone from ISU will be knocking on his door soon. I did get a chuckle out in the west tailgating lot as I was pulling in when his loin cloth dropped down to his ankles. It caught the eye of several squaws out there in the parking lot, that's for sure.

By the way, that sure wasn't my DAD's Buick in the background. Nice looking wheels.

He's not working for the university. I don't see how they could butt in at all. He's a student dressing up in costume for a game. Nothing wrong with that.

Obviously he is not. Although the Chiefs in the past didn't work the university either. If he is walking around the grounds I would think it woud never be an issue. If he is down by the cheerleaders on the field side of the wall, it might be a different story and he was there for part of the game. It all sounds so nit-pickey so i'll just let the cards fall as they may. Can't criticize anyone who is showing team spirit.

So you're claiming that Chief Quabache WASN"T an official part of the university spirit?

I know that was Landini's point...

Looks like his loincloth and moccasins are the only 'authentic' dress for an Eastern Woodland Indian...

Also don't think too many Wea / Miami / Potawatomi lived in tepees...
Memorial Stadium should have had a wigwam

4Q, there is a difference between being a part of the university and what the original comment was, that the Chief was not "working" for the university. Again it is all semantics and I say we drop it. Let Eric do his thing.

"Working for the university..."

implies a paid position. Not a scholarship, grant, work-study, etc. but as an employee.

Don't mind the oakley's and thank goodness for the spanx or spandex or whatever "gear gear" he was sporting under the loin cloth.

My point is that even if it's a couple of students dressing up for games; do the research and make it regionally appropriate. If they're not going to go to that trouble, then why do it at all? Show up in a chicken suit, or dress up like a bunch of Celtic warriors or as Thor, Superman, Batman, etc, etc.

That was always PART of the complaints from the American Indians; that the depictions of THEM were both culturally insensitive (their words, concerns) and incorrect in type/style of dress.

All I can do when I read this is shake my head... Everybody stop being so PC and let us have fun. If anyone here is honestly offended by this then they are probably a little to sensitive to watch the sport of football so it should be a non-issue. If it bothers you that's your own problem. Who cares how accurate the outfit is? Everyone complains that we have no student dedication and people like some of you guys are why. Our generation can not have any fun without getting ridiculed for something. Come on

I'm with the students. If the school has a problem with it, they'll deny entrance. I'm sure if any of the folks complaining about the accuracy wanted to front the coin to the poor college kids to get the correct garb, they'd be more than happy to oblige you. In my opinion, I wouldn't care if 10,000 people dressed up as Helen Keller. Keep on keepin' on students. Next game dress up and drag one more friend with you.

I agree, it's the same as with all the complaining about the uniform colors and designs,I could care less as long as the program and the support from the university is going in the right direction.

I agree, I don't even care what color the spandex are, just like I don't see what all the fuss is over reference uniform designs. I just want the program to keep moving forwards and from all indications from recent events it is even with Nike uniforms that are black and a different shade of blue and arching lines.

I'm not offended...

by his choice of dress. I'm merely saying that he would LOOK better if he came as a Wea / Miami / Shawnee warrior. (And chances are he wouldn't spend any additional money)

I know enough about college students that any 'coin' that is presented will be consumed not worn.

People (even on this board) wonder why State doesn't sell more gear? Why alumni don't wear more gear??

Present the market with a worthy product and they WILL buy it. Part of the 'worthiness' is color; why on earth would I wear ISU gear in a non-ISU color? (Red, Green, Black, Yellow, etc, etc) ??

Market all of the black gear they choose; I'll never spend a cent on it; Realize I'm the minority and that doesn't bother me one whit.

In 4 years when "every program..." (per DGreenwell) starts wearing lime green (for the same reason they're wearing black today...) I'm sure State will start sporting lime green jerseys and the band wagon jumpers will run around in lime green jerseys thinking they look cool...

Holy Cow, just let the kids have fun!! As long as they are attending the games I don't care what they wear! I just want them there having fun and supporting their Sycamores! I hope he brings his whole tribe to the next home game and every game after that!
Bandwagon jumpers? Bring them on board!!!
