Mark Adams on the changed landscape in college hoops

WANTED: Passionate Sycamore Fanatics. That You?

Register NOW to join our community of die-hard Sycamore fans.

What if indiana state brought back all retro jerseys from the 79 team? Make it known that all sales will go to a general fund for NIL funds/ player allowance. Not sure that’s legal but why not be smart about this? Make it work or fall behind.

tell me that the school can’t get with the tourney teams from 00-01 and release their retro jerseys. Negotiate a deal for that to go for any type of fundraising. I assume that it would’ve never been a possibility until now. Take my money already!

The current system is broken and needed guardrails, yesterday.

the old way wasn’t much better considering it just pushed everything underground.

the thing I’m probably most passionate is the very simple concept that aritificialy limiting every athletes value to $0 plus scholarship is nothing more than about control.
One student could be on scholarship, pick any major, not play sports and make as much money as possible while they in still in school. Every athlete being told “no, you can’t make money because we (administrators) have already decided for you that your education and Scholly is enough.” Choosing a person’s value for them is weird when you only do that for a certain population. I don’t know how else to make that make sense. Avoiding inconveniences is not a good enough reason. I don’t accept that rationale.

Except it's never been the case.

Ricky "Ganja" Williams played 4-yrs of minor league baseball while simultaneously playing football for Univ. Texas; his baseball deal was a $50K bonus, standard MiLB contract wage AND a full ride playing football --granted it's not Nijel "Whore" Pack $$ but it was enough to cover Williams' sister's college costs

Matt Mauck played 3-4 years of MiLB in the Cubs org before inking his full-ride scholie to L$U -- granted, he took a helluva pay cut going from MiLB to L$U but his football career got him an NFL deal & enough ca$h to cover dental $chool...

there are PLENTY of kids who are pro athletes in one sport before becoming a scholie athlete in another sport

And I'll start worrying about how poor, broke-ass broke EVERY scholie athlete is when I start seeing true FROSH and 5th/6th-yr Seniors WITHOUT Thousands of Dollars worth of "ink" on every visible body part

Yes - the NCAA is responsible for most of the problems w/ the NIL but the current system will kill college sports quicker than the old system would have killed it

People complained that one and done would kill college basketball. Players left as soon as that could for the NBA money. It didn’t necessary make it worse but it did remove players. Next man up. Players now have the chance to stay in school longer and it’s also going to kill college basketball??? We know it’s going to change but…it won’t be dead.

I have an idea and this might sound crazy. What about telling student athletes that if a free ride to college isn't good enough that they don't have to play college ball? No one is forcing anybody to do anything. If they want some extra money then they should go find a part time job during the off-season.

it hasn't made the college game better

there are a handful - a HANDFUL of HS kids who were truly ready to go from HS Sr superstar to NBA rookie - a handful, yet, EVERY street agent in the country was blowing smoke up the posterior of far too many HS kids trying to convince to go pro NOW

Here we are arbitrarily putting a cap on a players value instead allowing a market to decide. Surely, you’d want to put a cap on what they can make during the off-season too. Which is roughly the entire month of May and April. Kind of. Or else some car dealer might start paying players for work like washing cars. In which, the players get $15/hr for a limited time for 2 months. I know we don’t have to discuss the fake jobs that pop up under your preferred scenario.

The poor mistreated college athlete. The superstar athletes could always go to a better college. That's a pay raise. A 4 year degree at Harvard would be worth a lot more than at Michigan.

For those of you that really want to do a deep dive into all of this you should read the Alston opinion. It's a very easy read as SCOTUS opinions go--especially for a Sherman Act case. And mind you it was unanimous. The so-called "liberal" and "conservative" Justices all agreed. Justice Gorsuch starts off noting there’s been money involved in college sports since 1852. And the opinion ends with a very blunt "The NCAA is not above the law" by Justice Kavanaugh.

If this is the same one I read awhile back, it's the main reason they lost so handedly is because of how they argued it? Claiming you're not commercial institutions at this point regarding sports is nuts. You are. But the majority of them don't make money and are essentially businesses on welfare.

The entire system needed to be redesigned. Like I said earlier, I have no problems with kids getting something. However, NLI just means the schools with the biggest boosters will buy the players and will invalidate any semblance of competition. IMO when the Government stepped in, they should have demanded a study get completed so it could satisfy all constraints.

I honestly think my salary cap system would have been the best approach. Have the NCAA or a new third-party org have an overall college hoops booster fund and then it gets equally divided amongst all D1 teams and that is the teams cap to get divided amongst 13 players how the coaches see fit.

There is now a rumor that several schools including Kentucky are offering Drew Timme $750k to come play for them for a year. Essentially for me this means college basketball season ends once the MVC tournament concludes, especially after the P5 elites have a couple years to scale up their reserves and rosters.

Did you see Nigel Pack signed a two year deal worth 800K and a new car to play for Miami? The owners of Lifewallet are Miami alums and they're ready to spend.
But this is going to turn into a mess. Just wait till some of these boosters start telling their players to shave games or get axed from their NIL contracts.

Yes - it was posted earlier in this thread and continued to be an accelerant to an already well lit fire.

That is essentially what spawned the last couple pages. College sports are essentially done for the time being until this blows up or they decide they need to revamp the entire system.

The fact that anyone thinks this is different than it was before is funny. Miami was already paying players. It’s just now transparent. The landscape hasn’t really changed other than the veil has been lifted.

your post sounds like the "logic" from the pro-legalize dope crowd

Never heard of LifeWallet but just looked it up. So interesting to see that they have a page on their site for their NIL athletes. This company must have some deep pockets to offer ol boy 2 yr 800k. Like Steph Curry deep. Personally I can't wait for
1. NIL companies to start "releasing" kids due to poor performance
2. A player to sign a multiyear NIL deal, out perform his contract, and demand to be traded to either another school or another NIL company
3. A player to ask for his NIL contract to be reworked b/c a player who isn't as good got a better deal
4. Players to become uncoachable b/c they're literally making more than their coaches
5. Players to realize that a strong social media presence just might make them more money than a strong game.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't you just describe the NBA today in 1-5! LOL!
